Jesus, The Urantia Book,[page 1590:5]Th e U r a n t i a Pa per s de scr i be a nopportunity presented to all humans: thechance to participate in the most breathtakingof universe transformations the evolution offinite mortals into free-will universe sons, able to actand associate in their Father’s absolute domain. Thisbrief study is an attempt to describe something of thistransition, as portrayed in the Urantia Papers. As we explore the transformation endured byascendant personality we come to see humanity—ourselves—in a new light. We discover that “human”is part of a transitional technique: we are that momentof opportunity when the Universal Father aligns andattempts to zip together two absolute fragments ofhimself, Adjuster and Person. Given time and spaceand a master universe age, this union emerges from itsabsonite womb as“a unique child of the Universal Father, a child withoutduplicate in infinity, a will creature irreplaceable in alleternity.” [p.138:4]Almost 3,000 years ago a poet in Palestine whisperedto his God:“What is man, that you are mindful of him?”Even today this remains a really good question. Why should the Author of Reality be interested in us?What’s another planet-full of mortals to the Creator ofan eternal infinity?Recently, via the Urantia Papers, an answer hasbeen given. Now, some of us may grumble that theauthors were a bit long-winded (2097 pages?). Othersmay complain that they made some simple Truths waytoo complex. But if this answer is to be appropriate for thenext planetary age, if it is to be sufficient, and satisfying, for scientists, philosophers and mystics alike, considerwhat was required:To explain the phenomenon of man, they had toexplain Personality, which meant revealing the UniversalFather as Source and Center. of personality! UAI Journal Vol 16, No 1 March 2009Urantia AssociationInternationalEDITORIAL2JOURNALJournal TeamEditor: Suzanne K ellyskelly@wtmi.netGr e e t i n g s f e l l owreaders of the UAI Journal! It is with happiness andexcitement that I write myfirst editorial for the 2009 series of theUAI Journal. Hopefully, following inthe large footsteps of our outgoingeditor, Alain Cyr, I will be able todo as well as he has in the past. Ialso want to thank Carrie Prenticefor her contributions as AssociateEditor and proofreader coordinator, and welcome Alice Arkens as herreplacement.Thank goodness we will continue to work with the fabulouslytalented and seasoned staff of theJournal, including, Vern Verass,James Woodward, Rick Lyon, KarenLam, Alain Cyr and many morewonderful volunteers! In this first edition for 2009we will feature another incrediblearticle by one of our favorite authors,Nigel Nunn of Australia. In this veryin-depth article entitled “A Momentof Opportunity – Personality inTransition” Nigel investigates themoment when “the Universal Fatheraligns and attempts to zip togetherthe two absolute fragments of himself, Adjuster and Person.” He leadsus up to and through this momentfrom inception to transformation, utilizing exceptional graphics andstunning language. Nigel succeedsin taking us on another spectacularadventure of space time and personality culmination. Hang on to your‘seat of identity’—it is a great ride inunderstanding.Associate Editor: Carolyn Prenticecmp9q3@yahoo.comFol low i ng Nig el ’s a r t icleis a thought-provoking article byYolanda Silva Solano on “MessengerMolecules.” It is an energy-relatedspeculative quest to examine theassociation of mind and matter at theDNA cell level, while at the same timediscovering the spiritual significanceof this information as it is presentedto us “as the mind of man becomesready.”Our final article is “The Natureof Ego and the Purpose of Egoism” byMaurice Migneault. In this intriguingessay Maurice examines the purpose, problem and role of the ego as he asksthe tough questions of how it operatesand of course, how far it will go.Each article is another exquisiteperspective into personality actualization, and each one gives us anotherviewpoint on who we are, wherewe are going, and just what we aredoing here. The image in which weare cast is our ability to conceive andto create—not only for ourselves, butalso for the Brotherhood of Man andthe Fatherhood of God. 3UAI Journal Vol 16, No 1 March 2009the separation of Paradise from The Eternal Son. Toexplain the human context, they had to rework geology, biology and psychology. And they had to explain howwe are salvaged from death, which meant revealing theCreator Sons, distinct from the Eternal Son. Whichbrings us to the moment when the Universal Fathersaid to the Son,“Let us make mortal man in our own image.” [pp. 78:3,85:5, 110:7, 359:5]All this implies a biggish book. But getting backto what they actually tell us about ourselves, when weunwrap this revelation from all this information, thepicture we find is simple, and staggering:“The Adjuster is an absolute essence of an infinite being”[p.1176:6]An absolute essence? Of an infinite being? So whatare we, that they should seek us out? What on earth arethese Mysterious Monitors up to? How do the Urantiapapers make sense of this outrageous truth? Simple, they help us to see ourselves as we are seen: as a pointof personality able to engage a fragment of the FatherHimself. We are the attempt to blend two absoluteessences into one being. The experiential personality of evolving man, united to theAdjuster essence of the existential God, [p.1111:6]In us, the Father brings together two fragments ofhimself, Adjuster and Person, and waits upon our will.We are that moment when He allows another will tosay “Yes!” or “No!” to him. We are that moment whenEternity opens and welcomes a new child, or the angelsmourn the death of that child whom only we couldbe. This is the phenomenon of man: that we launch aParadise Finaliter, or we murder that child—whom onlywe could be.“The love of the Father absolutely individualizes eachpersonality as a unique child of the Universal Father, a childwithout duplicate in infinity, a will creature irreplaceablein all eternity.” [p.138:4]In the Father’s frame He either sees us surf Hiswaves of love into His absolute domain, or He enduresthe pain of losing us, “a child without duplicate ininfinity, a will creature irreplaceable in all eternity”. Weare that moment of opportunity when the UniversalFather attempts to zip together two precious fragmentsof himself. Let’s see how much we can discover, aboutourselves, our relationships, and why—in a fifth epochalsense—our Father is mindful of us.Simplicity and ComplexityJesus said that we are the children of God. Jesus—thefourth epochal revelation of Truth to this world—revealed that the Universal Father is our Father; “OurFather, who art in Heaven. ”. Simple. The most importantand most simple truth a Person can ever know. A simpletruth that trumps all the fourth epochal theology andphilosophy our world has suffered. But simplicity can hide a true complexity. Think ofswitching on a light. What could be more simple? But tothe electrician, this is many problems to be solved: gettingall that wiring in place, connecting with the power grid, the guarantees of safety. so that even a child need onlyflick a switch to fill a room with light.Something like this is happening in space-time, andfor us. Our Michael has made of Nebadon a home wherewe need only “flick a switch” to come to life. To be filledwith that “true light which lights every man who comesinto the world” we need only say “Yes!”, then hang onfor the ride of our life! This simple, central Truth, that God is our Father,is the tip of an iceberg; the simple, beautiful tip of a vast“Thought Adjusters” collage.A Moment of Opportunity – Personality in transition, continued from page 1

4UAI Journal Vol 16, No 1 March 2009“Simplicity – made possible by Complexity 1” collage.and answers those questions we cosmic babies mustinevitably ask. Like children everywhere, we simply haveto ask “Why?” and “How?” Why does our Father wantus as His children? Does he want us to live with Him?How can He take us into His eternal home? How doesHe translate us from where we are to where we are to be?How does He make us perfect, even as He is perfect? Ifwe truly are His children, of what are we made? Whatcomponents went into our creation?“. when the Father, in projecting the bestowal of theThought Adjusters, proposed to the Son, “Let us makemortal man in our own image.” [p.78:3]Made in the image of the eternal, absolute andinfinite Father.mountain of unfathomable details, of mind bogglingcomplexity. The relationships and interactions of spirit, mind and matter that allow us to exist; the tapestry ofmeanings and values that forms the fabric of the finitecreation. But this is not our problem. Our Father’sParadise Creator Sons have volunteered to resolve thiscomplexity, to make smooth the way, to make possible ourcreation and perfection. All we need do is to live loyallyeach moment as tadpoles [p.1094:6], to work our littletails off in the joyful adventure of growing up.The quickest way for a tadpole to become a frog is to liveloyally each moment as a tadpole. [p.1094:6]But think what it took, that we tadpoles need onlyflip our little tails. To make possible our mortal lives,Michael and his Divine Mins spent hundreds of billionsof years [p.1309:1] forming the foundations and masteringthe complexity of Nebadon. Then a thousand millionyears giving birth to their own magnificent family:mighty Melchizedeks, dependable Vorondadeks, babyLanonandeks; and the entire scene blessed by the beautyof their choirs of ministering daughters. Yet still no sign ofMan! For a billion years, Nebadon was Michael’s familyaffair. But eventually, the time came for him to turn hisattention to his Father’s work:And then, when such a universe has been so completelyorganized and so repletely manned, does the Creator Sonenter into the Father’s proposal to create mortal man intheir divine image. [p.359:5]Not until everything was ready, and his entire family trained, did Michael dare attempt the phenomenonof Man. Michael—our own Jesus—sets up and mastersthe complexity of a local universe, and makes Nebadonthe womb his Father needs, a place where fragments ofhis Father can be personalized by us, fertilized with allthe colour and experience our willful personalities canbring. A place to begin the adventure of turning babyversions of himself into associable absolutes. For minded creatures like us, the simplicity of experiential truth is enhanced by experiential understanding, and by simple facts, spun into a frame for thought. Theforth epochal revelation revealed a simple truth, that Godis our Father. This fifth simply confirms and amplifies,“The Adjuster is an absolute essence of an infinite being”[p.1176:6]How can we grasp the enormity of this? An absoluteessence of an infinite being. Perhaps if these Adjusterswere merely monitors, or benefactors, or associates, wemight be able to begin to imagine such a being. But theauthors insist that these mysterious Adjusters, thesebeings from eternity, each an essence of the Author ofReality, are to be [or not to be] us! But why on earthshould such a being seek us out? In the frames for thoughtexisting across this world, such a notion ranges from theastounding to the blasphemous, via the comical. But inno existing frame is it suspected to be true. Hence theneed for some “other and higher” frame [p.1260:3] . If thefundamental truth, about what we are and what we areto be, does not fit into our 4th epochal wineskins, weneed a new one. Here is the key to the mystery: while we may seemlike mere tadpoles, we are personalized tadpoles, and thispersonalization is changeless, an absolute. It has “potentiality of seven dimensions of self-expression or person-realization”[p.1226:13]. The business of the Father, to which Michael iscommitted, is to bring together these two absolute values;to align the eternal orientations of the Adjuster withthe seven dimensions of our person-ness; to weave intoone being these two bestowals of the Universal Father.Sounds complicated because it is! This is the Father’sbusiness that Michael has in mind. This is the Father’splan made possible by Jesus, our Michael of Nebadon. And that it takes a Creator Son to foster and midwifeour birth, should hint at the enormity of what is reallygoing on.Transformation – via a sequence of birthsThe simple truth—that God is our Father—impliesthe complexity of getting us to Paradise. But what possibletechnique could ever be sufficient to transform us fromfragile finite mortals, into sub-infinite penetrators of ourFather’s absolute eternal home?At last, the Urantia papers reveal how this is done. They describe a sequence of births, each followed bygrowth and butterfly-like transformations: (1) the Life

UAI Journal Vol 16, No 1 March 2009* * *The simple truth—that God is our Father—impliesthe complexity of getting us to Paradise. But what possible technique could ever suffice, to transform us fromfragile finite mortals into sub-infinite penetrators of ourFather’s absolute eternal home? This is where Michael’sown family come in: Melchizedeks, Vorondadeks,Lanonandeks, the Material Adams and the Angelic hosts, even the midwayers. His local universe children fosterour existence, our progress and our survival. So howdo they view us? Their knowledge of what we are mustmake it hard for them to believe what we are intendedto become. The Parable of the WombA Life Carrier, a Lanonandek and aMelchizedek walk into a bar. Actually, Rita’s Baron Salvington, just around from the gate intoMichael’s Northern Hall. Rita, as usual, is behindthe bar polishing glasses.“Welcome lads!” she says as they enter.“What’ll it be?”“The usual, thanks,” they reply.“Righto – a pint of material light for our LifeCarrier friend, a snifter of intellectual insight forour young Lanonandek, and two fingers of spiritluminosity for the Professor.” The three thank her,and settle back. It’s been a long day.Now Life carriers are always animated, butRita notices that this particular chap is beaming.“Things going well, are they?” she prompts.Life Carrier“Oh yes!” enthuses the Life Carrier.“Breakthrough in womb technology! You knowhow, on some inhabited worlds, the nativepopulations are not smoothly blended with theirAdamic uplifters, like on Michael’s Urantia? Wellwe finally got it sorted. No more morning sickness, easier births. For millions of such mothers, a muchbetter process in every way.” He takes a deep draftfrom his pint of light and beams brighter still.“You know, I never tire of the idea, that Finalitersbegin their ascent as mere fragments in a mortalmother’s womb.”A l l three sitquietly for a moment, reflecting upon theFi na l iters , t hosemade in the image ofthe Father, fosteredby the efforts of theLife Carriers on thematerial worlds.“Embryo” photo.Carriers evolve a womb that can support gestation for ababy human, (2) the mortal life provides gestation for ababy soul, (3) our local universe career provides gestationfor a baby spirit, and (4) the grand universe adventure, traversing the sectors of Orvonton and the billion worldsof Havona, provides the gestation required that all sevendimensions of our Personality properly unfurl. Like sevenwings of the surprising butterfly we are to be (or not tobe) if we catch (or miss!) our moment of opportunity.LanonandekThe Lanonandek, considering his glass, adds “Indeed, the womb is a powerful metaphor.Consider how the entire human life serves aswomb for the soul, that first-stage morontia formwe use to launch their ascendant careers.” Hesips from his snifter of insight and reflects on thebillions of such souls that he and his team havehelped foster.MelchizedekThe Melchizedek, professor at the LocalUniverse U., furrows his brow. “The womb isindeed a deep concept. We actually run a course, exploring how the entire local universe careerserves as gestation for those first-stage spiritascenders—those chips off the old block—whomwe help Michael launch toward Paradise and theFather. In this sense we might even say that all ofNebadon serves as a vast magnificent womb.”These three local universe sons, quietlyreflecting upon the phenomenon of Man, hiscycles of embryonic assembly in this varietyof wombs, and what it might all mean. Rita, polishing glasses still, glances and winks at Onesitting over in the corner, quietly alone; a SolitaryMessenger. “Anything to add, Solo?”In that uncanny way in which SolitaryMessengers move, he is no longer in the corner,on the Far Side, but behind and leaning on thebar, beside Rita.Solo“Well yes. From our frame it looks likethis: the Father desired a full family, of Ones likethe Son but in splendid variation. So he had hisArchitects make a “master universe”, to serve aswomb for fragments of himself. Such fragmentseeds become Adjusters within humans, aligningwith their seven dimensions of personality. Such“embryonic man” becomes “ascending Son”, andthose of us from Paradise, who know the Father’swill, stand back in awe.5

6UAI Journal Vol 16, No 1 March 2009The story so farImmanuel to Michael:Pour out upon the planet of your bestowal the Spirit ofTruth and thus make all normal mortals on that isolatedsphere immediately and fully accessible to the ministryof the segregated presence of our Paradise Father, theThought Adjusters of the realms. [p.1328:3]“From Mortal to (stage 1) Morontia” illustration.Truth is made accessible:“From Morontia to (stage 1) Spirit” illustration. We have humans side by side with Adjusters, tadpole persons being adjusted into alignment with theabsolute essence of an infinite being. We have Michael ofNebadon making a place and a time where this association can occur. We have Trinity observers (Immanuel)monitoring the scheme, we have Solitary Messengerscoordinating the invisible and unimaginable – on behalfof the Master Architects. And we have humans, being gently launched, stage by stage, transition by transition, until they getup sufficient speed to be launched from their Nebadonnest, aimed for Paradise. But that it takes a Creator Sonto make this possible should imply to us the enormityof what is going on. a spiritual transformation bordering on thelimits of supremacyAfter all, to mortals the most important thing abouteternal Paradise is the fact that this perfect abode of theUniversal Father is the real and far-distant destiny of theimmortal souls of the mortal and material sons of God,the ascending creatures of the evolutionary worlds of timeand space. Every God-knowing mortal who has espousedthe career of doing the Father’s will has already embarkedupon the long, long Paradise trail of divinity pursuit andperfection attainment. And when such an animal-originbeing does stand, as countless numbers now do, beforethe Gods on Paradise, having ascended from the lowlyspheres of space, such an achievement represents thereality of a spiritual transformation bordering on the limitsof supremacy. [p.127:6]. only the beginning . always young .At such a future eternity moment the master universe willstill seem youthful; indeed, it will be always young in theface of the limitless possibilities of never-ending eternity.[p.1170:1]Truth is made accessible to the wisdom-endowed individualby the bestowal on such a mind of the spirits of the Fatherand the Sons, the Thought Adjuster and the Spirit of Truth.Let the transformations begin:The Morontia Power Supervisors are able to effect a unionof material and of spiritual energies, thereby organizinga morontia form of materialization which is receptiveto the superimposition of a controlling spirit. When youtraverse the morontia life of Nebadon, these same patientand skillful Morontia Power Supervisors will successivelyprovide you with 570 morontia bodies, each one a phase ofyour progressive transformation. From the time of leavingthe material worlds until you are constituted a first-stagespirit on Salvington, you will undergo just 570 separateand ascending morontia changes. 7UAI Journal Vol 16, No 1 March 2009“Into an eternity of Personal relationship” illustration.does it mean to be personal? What relationship doespersonality have to matter, mind and spirit? And howdo all these relate to “reality”?Materialists and mystics alike are deeply interestedin these questions, but their modes of enquiry diverge. The materialist defines to be real only that which amaterial meter can measure. Thus to understand reality,he makes bigger, sharper meters. The religionist, whileadmiring the scientific technique, assumes reality isaccessed by subjective experience and revelation. Overrecent centuries these distinct approaches to understanding have forged antagonistic frames for thought, noneof which help clarify the nature of personality, let alonereality. Can the “other and higher frame” presented bythe Urantia Papers help?It is not enough“1st Source & Center” illustration. It is not enough that the ascending mortal should knowsomething of the relations of Deity to the genesis and manifestations of cosmic reality; he should also comprehendsomething of the relationships existing between himselfand the numerous levels of existential and experientialrealities, of potential and actual realities. Man’s terrestrialorientation, his cosmic insight, and his spiritual directionization are all enhanced by a better comprehension ofuniverse realities and their techniques of interassociation, integration, and unification. [p.1162:1]Personality and Reality: materialism vs. revelation“Engine of creation” illustration. The Urantia Papers imply that there is one thingthat makes mortals interesting to the original I AMCreator: we are personal. So what is personality? WhatTo the materialist, reality consists of energyevolving in space and through time. Physics shaped thisenergy into matter; chemistry turned this matter intolife, which evolved mind and became man. Man thendreamt for himself a spirit world, and ever since hasendured the valley of the shadow of death, troubled bynotions of identity, a persistent sense that “I am”. In thematerialist frame, personality is reduced to little morethan a novelty of complexified biology. But the Urantia Papers offer another view, onewhich avoids the alchemy of turning matter into mind, and mind into spirit. Instead, they describe reality as aconfiguration of four “absolute presence circuits”, eachwith its distinct source and center. The source and centerof material reality, they call the Isle of Paradise.Anything which responds to this central Isle, they defineto be material. The source and center of mind, they callthe Infinite Spirit. That which responds to this center, they define to be mind. The source and center of spirit, they call the Eternal Son; that which responds to the Son,they define to be spirit. Finally there is the UniversalFather; personality is defined to be that whichresponds to Him. Personality is revealed to be a circuit sofundamental, and so precious, that the Universal Father

8UAI Journal Vol 16, No 1 March 2009in the Urantia papers; our best logic and deduction willnot provide a proof. So how can we judge whether suchsources and relationships are true? Consider that problemof “seeing the forest for the trees”: how can we ever hopeto understand the nature of our Father’s universal forest, stuck as we are in one cell of a leaf of a sapling? Are such fundamental aspects of reality beyondmortal capacity to discover? If so, then the Papers statethat such things, eventually, may be revealed. Such is thecase with the Urantia papers, which describe themselvesas the fifth revelation of epochal significance to thisworld. But modern, skeptical humanity has learned thehard way to seek proof rather than apply faith. So whatto do when faced with revelation? How to proceed? How to integrate revelation into the cultures evolvedby mankind? Are we to dismiss logic? Is the acceptanceof revelation illogical?“Metaphysics has proved a failure; mota, man cannotperceive. Revelation is the only technique which cancompensate for the absence of the truth sensitivity of motain a material world.” [p.1136:3]did not, or could not, delegate its care. In this “other andhigher frame”, one might even conclude that the domainsof matter, mind and spirit serve to help personalise thefamily of the I AM.So the Urantia Papers turn the materialist frameboth upside down and inside out. They reveal personalityto be not only the motivational center of reality, but alsoa desired culmination. Instead of life and mind and manevolving from energy, blindly and by chance, the Papersreveal the material domain to be arranged by mindunder the control of spirit for the purposes of the I AMmotivator. And it is one of these purposes of the I AMthat is the center of our theme: if the Universal Fatherreally did say to the Eternal Son, “Let us make mortal manin our own image”, then for this venture to succeed theyrequire a place and a time, a finite womb and a universeage, from which to give birth to such sons. So, what doesthis make man? When the poet asked that question,“What is Man?”, he may not have been ready for theanswer.Reality checkWith so many facets and phases of reality floatingabout, it’s time for a reality check. Note that we cannotobserve or measure the (absolute) relationships described“A non-time sequence?” illustration.“I AM” illustration.Unaided, we have only three paths whereby toapproach Reality: (1) reason, (2) philosophy and (3) faith. The answers of faith range from crude superstitions tosublime experience. The answers of philosophy eitherstagnate in nihilism, or get lost in metaphysics. Theanswers of science are bound by reason to the materialdomain. None alone appear sufficient, or appropriate, for the next planetary age. Is there any other way for us

9“Interactions & Illuminations” illustration.“The measure of a man” photo.UAI Journal Vol 16, No 1 March 2009to discover who and what we are? In Paper 103, one ofNebadon’s Melchizedeks puts it like this,“Faith most willingly carries reason along as far asreason can go and then goes on with wisdom to the fullphilosophic limit; and then it dares to launch out uponthe limitless and never-ending universe journey in the solecompany of TRUTH.” [P.103:9:7, p.1141:5]be true, and while it may be the motivating truth thatstirs our Creator Son to action—to complete his missionto make perfect his Father’s ascending children—fromour subjective experiential perspective, this is hardly thecase. Subjectively, we are the decisions we have made, encapsulated in flesh. We judge ourselves by the decisionwe are about to make. We live in our little inner worlds, furnished slowly, decision by decision, and coloured byour aspirations.“Meanings are nonexistent in a wholly sensory or materialworld. Meanings and values are only perceived in the inneror supermaterial spheres of human experience.”“The advances of true civilization are all born in this innerworld of mankind. It is only the inner life that is trulycreative.” [p.1220:1,2]The Urantia papers make possible a 4th approach:via truth, made accessible by revelation.Revelation is a technique whereby ages upon ages of timeare saved in the necessary work of sorting and sifting theerrors of evolution from the truths of spirit acquirement.[p.1110:4]When a materialist scientist or philosophercontemplates reality, they consider only that which theycan measure: that subset of energies emerging from thematerial domain. Likewise, when they study “Man”,their first step is to assume that “what you see is what youget”, and that by looking ever closer, all will eventuallybe revealed. But the Urantia papers claim there is muchmore to “Man” than mortal eye (or meter) can see. While this poetic notion, that we are a “momentof opportunity”, may in some grand and cosmic sense“Personal” illustration. The measure of a m
