CANADIAN DRIVER’S LICENCE REFERENCE GUIDEIn Canada, provincial/territorial licencing regulations are modeled on theguidelines set out in the Canadian Council of Motor TransportAdministrators (CCMTA) National Safety Code (NSC) that is supportedby four standards. All Canadian licenced drivers must meet theserequirements prior to being eligible to operate a commercial vehicle, and arerequired to carry a driver’s licence that is valid for the vehicle and conditionsunder which it is operated. This guide will identify each of the 13 Canadian jurisdictions (10 provincesand 3 territories) and their driver licencing classification system. The contentincludes the driver licence class, type of vehicle permitted to be operated, and restriction/endorsement codes.DISCLAIMER/CAUTIONThe Canadian Driver’s Licence Reference Guide is designed to be used asguidelines only. While the guidelines represent good practices, they may notconform exactly to current provincial/territorial regulations. Inspectors arecautioned to always follow current regulations when determining whatlicence information is required.Copyright 1997–2015Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance111*Revised April 1, 2015All Rights Reserved.

NOVA SCOTIANOVA SCOTIA DRIVERS LICENCEJanuary 2015RESTRICTIONS:Most restriction codes are printed on the back of the driver’s license. Some codes (i.e., arearestrictions) may be too lengthy to print on the back of the card, and those codes will causea large red “R” to be printed on the front of the license to alert law enforcement’s attention tothe restriction. In order to know what these particular codes mean, law enforcement mustcontact the Registry of Motor Vehicles. Many restriction codes will also cause a large red “R” to be printed on the front of thedriver’s license even where the code itself prints fully on the back of the license. Again, it isexpected that this will draw law enforcement’s attention to the particular restriction. Our driver’s license does not print a “Y” or “N” on the front of the license to indicatewhether the particular driver has any restrictions.Restrictions Due to Age: NoneENDORSEMENTS:The following codes are used and displayed on the licence:AValid for Any Motorcycle and Motor-driven Cycle.
