PAGE 2PURIM PARTYOn Sunday the 8th of March, the community had its very own Purim party. Everyone dressed up, including some parentswho dressed up as Prince Charming. I'm sure all of the little princesses had fun with that. Every single one of the little boysand girls dressed up for the party. Which included appearances from Spider Man, Snow White, Cleopatra, a Bride, QueenEsther and other beautiful princesses and handsome princes.With this Purim party I'm going to start the very first annual, Purim Prince and Princess award. And the Purim Prince goesto. Ori who dressed up as a very adorable sailor, and the Purim Princess goes to. Yael who dressed up as a verysnazzy Hawaiian girl. Other awards are, The Awesome Costume award which goes to Belinda Fragman and Shay Newman. The kids seemed to be having a pretty fun time, with tables around the room set up with glitter, masks and presentswhich all the kids gave to all of their friends. Not a frown in sight on this magical day.Fondue was served thanks to Maricar, as well some candied apples. And finally Daday’s famous ice cream, vanilla andchocolate chip. Music by the band played, which is always good whenever we have a party. Be sure to check out theirconcert at Pasay. A final comment I'd like to say before I end my part of the newsletter is, how beautiful the decorationswere, from the castle to all the signs and beautiful pictures everyone drew. They had baking,making masks and more.MAZAL TOVThe food was terrific! PAGE 3PHILIPPINE-JEWISH HISTORY:EZRA TOEG, THE COMMUNITY’SLEADEROne of the leading forces in the communityin the last 60 years was a man named Ezra Toeg.As many others, he came to Manila by accidentor by circumstance. His family left Iraq in the late19th Century in search of a better life. They wentto Bombay, India where Ezra was born in 1917.When he was one year old his family moved toShanghai and started a lumber business. Ezraarrived in Manila with his mother in November1941 to try to purchase a lumber concession. Hegot stuck in the city when the Japanesebombed Pearl Harbor the next month. As hismother still had an Iraqi passport they were notinterned. (Ezra cleverly pasted his photo on hismother's passport and told the authorities thatthat was the way it was done in Iraq.) They keptthemselves alive selling coal from a pushcart.After the war Ezra decided to stay in the Philippines. He married Esther whose family hadcome from Turkey during World War I. A religiousman, Ezra had learned ritual slaughter in Shanghai and was well versed in Jewish laws and customs. He acted as the "unofficial" rabbi of thecommunity for many years. For his own wedding, he slaughtered over 400 chickens and turkeys. He led the community in prayer andwalked seven miles each way in the hot sun toSaturday services in the synagogue (OrthodoxJews do not drive on the Sabbath) He alwaysmade sure that a Jewish visitor in Manila had aplace to stay and a kosher meal. He gave Hebrew language and Jewish history classes in private homes and acted as a one-man burial society. Ezra Toeg remained in Manila until 1990when he left for medical reasons. He died in theUnited States in 1991.Tuesday Ladies GroupOnce a week, each Tuesday, the ladies ofthe Jewish community gather together in thesocial hall to learn about and discuss interesting topics, issues and concerns relating to Judaism. Rabbanit Miriam heads, holds, facilitates and prepares for these weekly meetings.There are usually around 8 ladies present on aregular basis and on a good day, we havemore.These meetings are a venue for us to shareour thoughts about the topic prepared for agiven day as well as give us the opportunity toclarify questions that arise from the discussion.This week we discussed the role of the Kohanim.After all the stimulating conversation, as wedigest all the food for thought, we are treatedto refreshments and a sumptuous lunch.Last Tuesday, after a long spell of absence,due to my falling ill in October of 2008, I wasfinally able to once again join the ladies forour weekly meeting.
