Script 1Fear is important in the book because its why Alem and mr Kelo come to england. When theywere living in epheopea there was a war between two countrys and many people were killedby the soldiers even though they were told to ‘leave or die’. Mr Kelo was afraid that Alemmight be killed so he took him to england for to try to seek asylum until the war stopped.Fear is important in the book when Alem is scared when Mr Kelo leaves him alone in a hotelroom in england and he starts to scream at mr Hardwick as he doesnt understand why he hasbeen left. Alem cant speak much english and finds it hard to speak to mr Hardwick. mrhardwick gives him a letter from his father which explains why he left him but Alem is stillscared about what will happen to him.Fear is important in the book is when mr and mrs Kelo are attacked and then mrs Kelo is‘hacked to death’ by the soldiers. Whichever country they try to live in they are treated awfuland told to leave and that’s why mrs Kelo gets killed. This shows that taking Alem to Englandwas the best thing to do.The last place fear is important in the book is when ruth says she is afraid of getting to closewith Alem because she had a boyfriend who killed himself and she dont want to be hurtagain. She tells Alem she ‘hates him’. In the end Alem helps her and they become goodfriends.3Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9–1) in English Literature – Refugee Boy exemplars– Issue 1 – March 2021 – Author and Approver: GQ Product Management – DCL1 Pearson Education Limited 2021

Script 1: 14 marksAO1/3 – Level 2 (10 marks)AO4 – Level 2 (4 marks) Although the response is rather narrative at times there are some elements of apersonal understanding of the play and the importance of fear. The candidate coversa number of keys areas, including:o Mr Kelo’s fear for the safety of Alem during the civil war between Eritrea andEthiopia.o Alem’s fear when he is left alone on England.o Mr and Mrs Kelo’s fear of the soldiers.o Ruth’s fear of forming a relationship with Alem. All 4 points make appropriate reference to the question and the importance of fearand in most paragraphs some ideas are maintained or developed in keeping with therequirements of a Level 2.There is some attempt at a critical style, which moves beyond a narrative form andthe candidate shows some good understanding of the entire play. The response does include a couple of textual references to enable analysis, howeverthis could be developed further to move into a Level 3.There is some mention made to the context of the novel but this is implied ratherthan being explicit, showing some understanding of the civil war and Alem’s life as anasylum seeker.AO4 – there are some errors in the quality of writing. Capitalisation of proper nouns isinconsistent, there is a lack of accurate paragraphing and one or two punctuationmarks are missing. However, the quality of writing is accurate enough to place theresponse in a Level 2.4Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9–1) in English Literature – Refugee Boy exemplars– Issue 1 – March 2021 – Author and Approver: GQ Product Management – DCL1 Pearson Education Limited 2021

Script 2Refugee Boy is an exciting play about Alem a refugee from Eritrea who comes to England withhis father to apply for asylum. The play is set during a war between Eritrea and Ethiopiawhere many people were afraid for their lives and had to leave their homes to avoid beingkilled by enemy soldiers. Lots of people tried to escape to England for safety.Fear is important in the play when the soldiers come to the house of the Kelo’s carrying gunsthe quote that tells me this is ‘the soldier raises a gun’, this shows that the soldiers arecarrying guns and are dangerous and Alem is afraid of them. The gun tells me that they aregoing to shoot them. Alem is afraid when his mother is hit in the face by the soldier ‘mother’Fear is important in the play when Alem is left on his own in England after Mr Kelo lies andtells Alem that he is going on holiday to England but he leaves Alem in the hotel and goesback to Ethiopia. A quote that tells me this is ‘I think it would be best if you stay in England’this shows Mr Kelo is afraid that something terrible will happen to Alem back home so heleaves him in England.Fear is important in the play when Alem goes to live in a childrens home and gets bullied bySweeney who calls him a refugee boy and holds a knife to his throat. A quote that tells methis is ‘I’ll cut you up’. The word cut shows that Sweeney is going to hurt Alem.Fear is important in the play when Alem is asking the court for asylum and he is afraid thatthey won’t let him stay in England. A quote that tells me this is ‘you know what will happen ifwe get sent back’ this shows that Alem is afraid to go back to Ethiopia as he may get killed likehis mother. In conclusion fear is an important in the play as it shows how frightening it is being a refugeeand living in a war zone.5Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9–1) in English Literature – Refugee Boy exemplars– Issue 1 – March 2021 – Author and Approver: GQ Product Management – DCL1 Pearson Education Limited 2021

Script 2: 21 marksAO1/3 – Level 3 (15 marks)AO4 – Level 3 (6 marks) Despite the opening paragraph solely focusing on the context of the play, the rest ofthe response is beginning to show a sound understanding of the theme of fear. Toenable the response to move to a higher Level 3, contextual discussion needs to beinterspersed throughout the writing to enhance each point being made. The candidate manages to explore 4 key areas of the play and is starting to show asound understanding of the importance of fear. The quality of the response places itsolidly in a Level 3 as it moves beyond a narrative style and is starting to show arelevant personal and critical style.Key areas covered:o The Kelo’s fear when the soldiers come to their house.o The fear Alem experiences when he is left alone in England.o Alem’s fear living in the children’s home and the bullying he is subjected to.o How Alem is afraid that the courts will not allow him and his father to stay inEngland. Each paragraph follows a PEE format, which are fairly systematic and formatted instyle and lack contextual links. However, they all have appropriately chosen examplesto support points being made. There is a lack of contextual discussion within the body of the response, although thecandidate does allude to context when mention is made to the soldier, the children’s’home and the court hearing. More explicit discussion is needed to develop the pointsfully.AO4 – the response meets the requirements of a low Level 3 as spelling, grammar andpunctuation are fairly consistent and despite one or two slips in sentence structuringand length the overall meaning is maintained.6Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9–1) in English Literature – Refugee Boy exemplars– Issue 1 – March 2021 – Author and Approver: GQ Product Management – DCL1 Pearson Education Limited 2021

Script 3Within the play Refugee boy by Benjamin Zephaniah and Lemn Sissay fear is an importanttheme and it is shown through the Kelo family and the horrors they experience living in awarzone and in their attempts to escape to England. In this essay I will be talking about thevarious ways fear is important in the play. The first example of fear is the reaction of Alem when he discovers that he is unable to getout of a hotel room. The stage directions describe how he is starting to ‘panic’ and beginningto shout for his father because the door is locked trapping him in the room. Alem thinks hehas come to England with his father on holiday but in fact they have come to escape the warin Ethiopia. The war led to many people being killed or trying to escape to another country toseek asylum. Ironically Alem has come to England for safety but has ended up being left aloneand locked in an unfamiliar room.Secondly fear is shown in the play when Alem discovers that he is all alone in Englandbecause his father has left him and returned to Ethiopia. Once Alem has been freed from thehotel room Mr Hardwick hands Alem a letter left by his father explaining that he wants toprotect his son, he says he ‘values Alem’s life more than anything’ and that he is terrified thatAlem would lose his life because of the ‘persecution’ in Ethiopia. This shows how terrified MrKelo is for his son’s safety and how he would risk anything to help him get asylum in England. As a father it must be an awful experience to leave your only child alone in a strange country.Obtaining asylum in England was a difficult process and very few people were successful.Thirdly fear is shown when the Kelo family are in Ethiopia and are being verbally andphysically abused by a soldier even though he was someone they used to know. An exampleof their fear is shown when the soldier shouts at them to ‘leave Ethiopia or die’ and then hitsMrs Kelo in the face with a gun, ‘blood sprays from her mouth’. The violence terrifies thefamily and they are forced to leave the country and move to Eritrea, hoping they would besafer there. Unfortunately, things get even worse for them and eventually Mrs Kelo is killed, creating more fear for Mr Kelo and his own safety.Another way fear is important in the play is when Alem is in the children’s home and hesuffers bullying by Sweeney who thinks he is the top dog in the home and picks on others. Anexample of this is when Sweeney thinks Alem is calling his family names, ‘you talkin badabout my family?’ He threatens to kill Alem with a knife and calls him ‘refugee boy’. Thisshows how tough and frightening life can be for young refugees growing up in a childrenshome far away from their parents. The final way fear is presented is when Mr Kelo and Alem are going to court to appeal forasylum. Ruth and Mustapha run a campaign to help Alem and his father but Mr Kelo is afraidthat this will ruin their chances of winning the case and he doesn’t want to cause a scene, ‘nocampaign. No more politics’. This demonstrates the fear he has, he thinks that by causing ascene it will go against their appeal and they will be sent back to Eritrea. In conclusion the play shows how fear is an important part of the play as it shows thechallenging situation that the Kelos face when they are trying to escape from a warzone.7Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9–1) in English Literature – Refugee Boy exemplars– Issue 1 – March 2021 – Author and Approver: GQ Product Management – DCL1 Pearson Education Limited 2021

Script 3: 30 marksAO1/3 – Level 4 (23 marks)AO4 – Level 3 (7 marks) A well-structured response, which is starting to demonstrate a sustained and thoroughunderstanding of the play and the importance of fear. Consideration is made to:o Alem’s fear at being locked in an unfamiliar hotel room.o The fear Alem experiences when he discovers that his father has left him alonein England.o How the Kelo family experience fear and violence at the hands of the soldiersin Ethiopia and how they are forced to flee for their lives.o The way Mr Kelo is afraid of being deported as a result of Alem’s, Ruth’s andMustapha’s campaign. All points have appropriately selected examples integrated within each paragraph, which support the points being made and place this response securely in level 4 forAO1.Analysis maintains an appropriately critical style, showing a sustained understandingof a range of areas within the play.Contextually, the points are relevant and sustained and explore the relationshipbetween the text and context. To raise the mark into a Level 5, contextual commentsneed to be integrated throughout each paragraph rather than acting as a concludingline.AO4 – although some sentences are rather long at times, overall, the quality of writingmaintains the requirements of a Level 3 mark.8Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9–1) in English Literature – Refugee Boy exemplars– Issue 1 – March 2021 – Author and Approver: GQ Product Management – DCL1 Pearson Education Limited 2021
