When:Picasso was born on October 25th,1881 and lived until April 8th, 1973.Where:Picasso was born in Spain but spentmost of his adult life in France. Why:Picasso was an amazing modernartist. He was the co-founder of thefamous Cubist art movement in theearly 1900’s.During this time period, some artistslooked at their subjects in new waysand re-created them using differentshapes and angles. Cubist paintings useblocks of shapes andbright colors.Picasso’s father was also an artistand art teacher. You can say that art was a part ofPicasso’s life from a very early age.Picasso was a very realistic painter(that means you can recognize thesubject matter), before his artbecame more abstract (that meansyou might not be able to recognizethe subject of the art).Abstract art might just be lines, shapes and colors. You may or maynot recognize what subject the artistis depicting.Easy Art Project For Kids: Pablo Picasso Self Portrait FineArtMom.comPage 2

Our inspiration piece for this art project is this painting:Woman Turned Rightfrom 1934.If you notice, her eyes appear to be lookingforward, while her nose and mouth appear to beturned to the side. You can see both angles of herface in one painting! Cubism at work! This portrait is a great example of the use of largeshapes and blocks of color to abstract the woman’s face. The added details like the lines in the backgroundand the outlined shapes add another layer ofinterest to this painting. So let’s get started.Supplies needed for this project are: colored paper (construction or card stock) pencil scissors glue sticks oil pastelsBy using our affiliate links to artsupplies, we will receive a smallcommission of your purchase.Thank you for your support. If you do not have oil pastels, you can also use: markers crayons paint pens various drawing suppliesOil pastels are opaque so they show up nicely onany color, but any drawing supplies will do!Easy Art Project For Kids: Pablo Picasso Self Portrait FineArtMom.comPage 3

Next step, ask your child to drawa self-portrait.Tell them to have fun and be creativewith their drawing. The less realistic their drawing is, thebetter for this art project. We’re taking a little journey into theworld of abstract art and Cubism forthis art project! We will be using the drawing of theportrait as a template to cut out shapesto recreate the portrait in colored paper. Make a photocopy of thedrawing if you’d like topreserve the original drawing. To “abstract” our portrait, cutaround the shapes and separatethe drawing into pieces. Next use each piece of thedrawing as a template to traceeach shape with a pencil on thecolored paper of your choice.Be bold pick bright colors! Once you have all of your shapestraced, cut them out withscissors.Keep track of each shape as you cutthem out so you can easily recreateyour portrait with the cut pieces ofpaper.Easy Art Project For Kids: Pablo Picasso Self Portrait FineArtMom.comPage 4

Now comes the fun part! Pick one sheet of paper to be the base for the cut pieces to be glued on.The color doesn’t really matter since most of this sheet will be covered with thecut pieces of paper. Now it’s time to put our portrait together again. Arrange each piece so you have them in the right places. Coat the back of eachpiece of paper with aglue stick and attach it tothe base piece of paper.Start with the largest shapesalong an edge first then fit theother pieces with that one.Voilà!Now it’son to thefinal stepto addsome fundetailswith oilpastels.Easy Art Project For Kids: Pablo Picasso Self Portrait FineArtMom.comPage 5

Time to make your portrait come alive!Oil pastels for children are agreat alternative to crayons. They blend smoothly, addbright colors and add funtexture to your artwork.Oil pastels show up betteron darker paper because oftheir opaque quality. Add colors, textures, details, outlines, anything you’d likeyour final artwork.Take some cues from yourinspiration piece Are there any largeareas you’d like tocolor in a differentcolor? What patterns andtextures can you addto the background? What personal detailscan you add to make itlook a little bit morelike you?Have fun and let yourimagination take youfor a journey exploringCubism and abstractart!Easy Art Project For Kids: Pablo Picasso Self Portrait FineArtMom.comPage 6

Your finished artwork!Frame your work and proudly display it. I hope you had fun with this project andlearned some interesting facts about Pablo Picasso.Easy Art Project For Kids: Pablo Picasso Self Portrait FineArtMom.comPage 7
