What is LED ?Zumtobel has always been knownas a pioneer of LED technologyand utilises it for a wide variety ofapplications for indoor and outdoor lighting, in both decorativeand functional areas. Constantlyincreasing levels of luminous fluxand the development of efficientoptical systems open the way forever more interesting lighting solutions for light projection applications. An impressive example is thelighting stage set at the new FIFAheadquarters in Zurich.Depending upon application andrequired lighting technology, threedifferent types of LED wereinstalled.SMD LEDs (Surface MountedDevice LEDs)These are bonded onto the surface of the printed circuit boardand are contacted in the solderingbath. The linear LED board inKAVA LED, for example, isequipped with LEDs featuringSMD construction.Chip-on-Board LEDsAfter the LED chip is bondeddirectly onto the board and is contacted via the “bond wires”, abonded epoxy lens, the so-called“bubble”, defines light distribution.According to the design of thebubble, a COB LED can haveextremely narrow-beam orextremely wide-angle distribution.Wire bondBubbleLED chipPrinted circuit boardHigh current LEDsAs part of the continuous development of LEDs for lighting industry purposes, focus is beingincreasingly shifted from decorative lighting applications to illumination. The LED chip mustbe c ome significantly larger. Inorder to achieve full output, powersupply is not 10–30 mA as withFluorescent principleor luminescenceconversionWhite LED light can be createdby two processes: firstly by RGBcolour mixing, where a neutral, somewhat indefinable white iscreated when the “colour triangle”is passed through. The second, standard process for creation ofwhite LED light is based upon theprinciple of luminescence con version.the small chips, but from 350 toover 700 mA, demanding a completely new LED design. High current LEDs are integrated within aheat sink that is able to take upthe heat from the chip very efficiently and transfer it directly to alarger cooling surface.A fluorescent layer similar to thatfound in a fluorescent lamp isincorporated above a blue LEDchip, so that a part of the lightband is converted into white light.According to the composition ofthe conversion substance, colourtemperature ranges from warm tocool white.

Advantages and limitations of LEDL ED TE C HNO L O G YBenefitsLong service lifeAccording to design, LEDsachieve a service life of up to50 000 hours and more. Thistranslates into long maintenanceintervals.Low energy consumptionAs part of the CO 2 debate, energyefficiency is becoming increasingly important. The luminous fluxper watt of today‘s LED generations is well above that of low voltage halogen luminaires, andaccording to colour temperature iscurrently between 40–80 lm/W.Gentle lightLEDs develop low levels of heaton luminaire surfaces because oftheir UV/IR-free light, making themideal for conservational lighting.White LED lightColour temperatures rangingbetween warm and cool can begenerated today with standardised types of LED.Coloured and dynamic lightLEDs create light directly in different colours. Coloured LEDs canbe combined into clusters andcontrolled in order to generatecolour mixes and dynamic coloursequences (RGB tech n ology).5LimitationsControl of LEDsLEDs are semiconductor devicesthat can be efficiently dimmed ordynamically controlled.Benefits of LED technologycompared to low voltage halogenCompared to low voltage halogen, one of the main advantages isIR/UV-free light and its absence ofheat radiation. The energy efficiency of LEDs is much higherthan that of low voltage halogenluminaires.Benefits of LED technologycompared to fluorescent lampsAdvantages compared to fluorescent lamps are somewhat less. Inaddition to conservational lightingand long maintenance intervals, the main benefit of LEDs is projected light.Lens optics allow optimal lightdirection onto the targeted area, allowing illumination output to bemuch more efficiently implemented. In addition, covelighting in dynamic colourswith RGB LED solutions, forexample, can be createdspace-savingly and with a highlevel of efficiency.Further benefits: Saturatedcoloursn Optimal operation at lowtemperaturesn esistance to vibration and RimpactnEnergy efficiency levels for LEDare at present lower than with thefollowing lamp technologies:– F luorescent lamps:80–100 lm/W– H igh pressure halogen lamps:90–100 lm/W– H igh pressure sodiumvapour lamps: 100–120 lm/W– LED: 40–80 lm/WLEDs are not at ease with highambient temperatures, and inthese conditions (in saunas forexample), luminous flux and service life of the LEDs are negativelyaffected. The board of high output LEDsbecomes very hot. In order toensure a luminaire service life of50 000 hours, the board must beefficiently cooled (e.g. with coolingribs, fan cooling or water cooling).
