IntroductionWelcome to Cursive Writing Practice: Jokes & Riddles! In the hustle andbustle of a hectic school day, cursive writing often gets short shrift. Withreading, writing, math, science, and social studies to learn, few studentshave the time or inclination to perfect the fine art of the loop-the-loop.kids for efficient note taking and self-expression.That’s where these lively practice pages come in! In as little as fiveminutes a day, you can spur students to spruce up their cursive writing.Just reproduce and pass out a page, then sit back and watch kids movetheir pencils with levity and care. Why? Because the simple act ofrewriting an amusing joke or riddle motivates them to master the shape, size, spacing, slant, and curve of model script. And here’s more good news: The completed practice pages can bequickly bound into instant joke-and-riddle books to share with familyand friends. Can you think of a cooler way to showcase a child’s carefullycrafted script? I can’t.Read on to discover more tips for using this resource to improveyour students’ cursive writing and, in so doing, their essentialcommunication skills.Your partner in education,V¡i¡o e¡t§ F¡i n¡dle y¶3Cursive Writing Practice Jokes & Riddles Violet Findley, Scholastic Teaching ResourcesWhat a shame! Using This ResourceMaking a Joke & Riddle BookletThis book has been designed for easy use. Beforeembarking on the joke and riddle pages, it’s a goodidea to review the basics. Do so by distributing theupper- and lowercase practice pages to students. These sheets include arrows showing the standardway to form each letter in cursive. As studentscomplete these pages, circulate around the roomlooking for writing “red flags”—that is, kids whoare forming their letters in nonstandard ways. If younotice an error, approach the student and modelstandard formation. This will help students rewiretheir cursive writing habits, which will improve boththe clarity and speed of their printing down the road.Once students have reviewed the basics, they’reready to enjoy the joke and riddle pages. These pagescan be reproduced in any sequence you choose. Here are some simple routines for sharing them:Once students have completed their pages, theycan follow these simple directions to make personalbooklets. They need not include every page.Cursive Writing Starters Place a practice pageon each student’s desk to complete first thing in themorning.2.
