My Personal CPE Planner 2018/20Understanding your ContinuingProfessional Education (CPE)commitmentOne of the most importantobligations of Massage& Myotherapy Australiamembers is the requirementto maintain professional standards.When you join Massage & MyotherapyAustralia, you are required to declare yourongoing compliance with the Massage& Myotherapy Australia Constitution,Code of Ethics, Standards of Practice,and Continuing Professional Educationrequirements.Compulsory CPE applies for bothmembership of Massage & MyotherapyAustralia and for eligibility for approvedprovider status with private healthfunds. ‘Advanced Members’ (Massage& Myotherapy Australia’s new membercategory) must have 50 CPE points,Remedial Members must have 40 CPEpoints and Massage Members must have30 points – valid at all times.The Five Elements of Massage &Myotherapy Australia CPE are explainedin detail with tables of applicable pointson pages 3 and 4 and you can findsome examples on page 5. On the backpage there is a step-by-step guide tomaintaining your CPE points online.You have a professional obligation toyourself, to your clients and to the publicto plan and participate in a continuingprofessional education program tailoredto meet your own and your industry’sexpectations.The underlying principle of CPE is thatit should contribute to improving yourability to undertake your job by extendingyour knowledge and skills. My Personal CPE Planner 2018/20The Five CPE Elements explainedPeople learn in many forms, auditory via webinars, visual through text and kinaesthetic via face-toface learning. Massage & Myotherapy Australia requires the same variety within the CPE structure:the capping system ensures our members garner information via all avenues of the learning systems.Using as many of the five elements as possible will ensure a variety and depth of education to assistyou in your role and in your journey towards professional development and reflective practice.1 Core(Examples: Cert IV, Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Bachelor.)Essential (formally qualified) knowledge for professionalpractice and currency of skills of the therapist. This includesthe understanding of the dynamics and complexity of thehuman body at a level which has been assessed to a pass mark,competency or equivalent. This element predominantly focuseson knowledge of the human musculoskeletal system in relationto areas of function, dysfunction, homeostasis, balancing andrehabilitation. These are often an AQF tertiarycourse.This element includes techniques and tools that may not havebeen fully covered in the therapist’s original formal qualifications.This would include techniques such as dry needling, cupping,advanced rehabilitation including stretching and exerciseprescription, advanced reflexology, or the practice of aromatherapy.Professional BAdjunct knowledge for professional practice or currencyof skills of the therapist that is delivered without formalcertification, examination or assessment included in the program.This would be typically delivered by an industry specialist in aseminar or lecture style. This element may replicate some of thetechniques as described in Professional A. The majority of CPEevents run currently by Massage & Myotherapy Australia fallinto this category.Endorsed Education Activities ProgramAnother option to earn CPE Points is to attend an EndorsedEducation Activities Program (EEAP) course. The programsrevise, enhance and build on education derived from initialor foundational massage therapy courses. They can also becharacterised by program design that offers newly emergingconcepts, principles, theories and research in massage, bodyworkand healthcare. The National Education Committee assesses thecontent of each EEAP application that expands and enhancesthe knowledge base of all our members as postgraduateopportunities. This element assists practitioners to build and developtheir business either as a sole practitioner, employer, as anemployee or part of a multimodality practice.Professional practice, promotion and profiling of the professionthat upholds the integrity of the profession and indicatescommitment as a practitioner.
