How a Cochlear Implant System works1234[ 1 ] Microphones on the external sound processor pick up sounds, and the sound processor converts theminto digital information.[ 2 ] This information is transferred to the implant just under the skin.[ 3 ] The implant sends the digital sound signals down the electrode into the cochlea.[ 4 ] The hearing nerve fibres in the cochlea pick up the signals and send them to the brain, which isunderstood as sound.

01Talk to your audiologist or doctor02Preliminary assessment and consultationAsk about the possibility of an implant. Your audiologist will be able to determine whether you could benefit froman implantable hearing solution and refer you to a specialist clinic if necessary.The clinic will use their professional assessment and expertise to determine if an implant is right for you, and whichtype. In most cases the cost of an implant will be covered by the NHS or other health insurance and the clinic willbe able to advise you.03 Receiving an implantIn the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland, there are around 150 clinics that specialise in implantable hearingsystems. Surgery is a routine procedure and requires only a short time in hospital.04Fitting or switch-onThis is the moment you have been waiting for.
