5The Promises of God"By which have been given to us exceedingly great and preciouspromises." (2 Peter 1:4)THE bible says that God has “given to us exceedinglygreat and precious promises” (2 Peter 1:4). Thebible describes God’s promises as being“exceedingly great.” Indeed that is true! It has beenestimated that there are approximately 30,000 promises in thebible. They are too numerous to count and too numerous tobring all to mind! God has given to us many promises such as“Delight yourself also in the LORD, and He shall give you thedesires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4) and “If you abide in Me,and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and itshall be done for you” (John 15:7). The bible also describesGod’s promises as being “precious.” God’s promises arepriceless and invaluable. They are comforting to the soul andencouraging to the heart. Promises such as “If we confess oursins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanseus from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9) and “The steps of agood man are ordered by the LORD, and He delights in hisway. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for theLORD upholds him with His hand” (Psalm 37:23-24) bringcomfort and encouragement to our hearts. How are God’s promises made possible to us? It is only becauseof the Lord Jesus Christ. He alone is worthy and who made usworthy to come before God and who “made us accepted in theBeloved” (Eph. 1:6). The bible says that “all the promises ofGod in Him [Christ] are Yes, and in Him [Christ] Amen, to theglory of God through us” (2 Cor. 1:20). Yes ALL, not some, butall the promises of God in Christ are “yea and Amen” (2 Cor.1:20). So when you go to God in prayer claiming His promises, you will not receive these promises unless you go through Jesus

6Christ. The bible says that Jesus is “the way, the truth, and thelife” and that “no one comes to the Father except throughHim” (John 14:6) and that there is “one Mediator between Godand men” who is the Lord Jesus Christ (1 Tim. 2:5). So if youwant to be heard by God and want to receive His promises, youneed to go to God through Jesus Christ.God’s promises are also based on His immutable nature. Thebible says that “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a sonof man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do?Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?” (Num.23:19). Joshua told the children of Israel before his death aboutthe promises of God saying: “Behold, this day I am going theway of all the earth. And you know in all your hearts and in allyour souls that not one thing has failed of all the good thingswhich the LORD your God spoke concerning you. All havecome to pass for you; not one word of them has failed” (Joshua23:14). God’s promises are sure and steadfast and are based onHis nature! The bible says “Indeed, let God be true but everyman a liar” (Rom. 3:4) and that “every good gift and everyperfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father oflights, with whom there is no variation or shadow ofturning” (James 1:17). The bible says that “when God made apromise to Abraham, because He could swear by no onegreater, He swore by Himself, saying, ‘Surely blessing I willbless you, and multiplying I will multiply you’” (Heb. 6:13-14).God’s immutable and unchangeable nature should be of a greatcomfort to us. The bible says “Thus God, determining to showmore abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of Hiscounsel, confirmed it by an oath, that by two immutable things,in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strongconsolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope setbefore us. This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sureand steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind theveil” (Heb. 6:17-19).

7How are we to treat God’s promises? The bible says that weshould “not become sluggish, but imitate those who throughfaith and patience inherit the promises” (Heb. 6:12) and that“the soul of a lazy man desires, and has nothing; but the soul ofthe diligent shall be made rich” (Prov. 13:4). God commands usthat we should “not become sluggish” but to “imitate those whothrough faith and patience inherit the promises” (Heb. 6:12) and“that each on of us show the same diligence to the fullassurance of hope until the end” (Heb. 6:11).One example of a man we ought to imitate is Abraham. Godpromised Abraham saying: “Surely blessing I will bless you,and multiplying I will multiply you” (Heb. 6:14). The bible saysthat “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him forrighteousness” (Rom. 4:3). God promised Abraham that Hewould bless him and multiply him and make him a great nation.Humanly speaking that was impossible for Abraham was oldand childless and his wife had passed the age of childbearing. But God told Abraham: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am yourshield, your exceedingly great reward” (Gen. 15:1) and Hebrought Abraham outside and said to him: “Look now towardheaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them.”And He said to him, “So shall your descendants be” (Gen.15:5). The bible says that Abraham “who, contrary to hope, inhope believed; so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, ‘So shall your descendants be.’And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and thedeadness of Sarah’s womb. He did not waver at the promise ofGod through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, givingglory to God, and being fully convinced that what He hadpromised He was also able to perform” (Rom. 4:18-21). Thebible says in Hebrews 6:15 that “after he patiently endured, heobtained the promise” (Heb. 6:15).

8The bible says to “take the prophets, who spoke in the name ofthe Lord, as an example of suffering and patience” (James5:10). Consider the example of Sarah also who “judged Himfaithful who had promised” (Heb. 11:11). And finally considerthe examples of the men and women in Hebrews chapter 11 –that great chapter of the heroes of faith “who through faithsubdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, OBTAINEDPROMISES, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched theviolence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weaknesswere made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight thearmies of the aliens” (Heb. 11:33-34). The bible commands usto “hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, forHe who promised is faithful” (Heb. 10:23) and that we should“not cast away our confidence, which has great reward. For wehave need of endurance, so that after we have done the will ofGod, we may receive the promise” (Heb. 10:35-36).We hope you enjoy reading this book of bible promises andtrust it will encourage you to claim His promises which are“Yes” and “Amen” (2 Cor. 1:20) in Christ our Lord.Standing, standing,Standing on the promises of God my Savior;Standing, standing,I’m standing on the promises of God!

9Promises to Take with You to YourPrayer Closet"And the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarahlaugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed Iwill return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarahshall have a son." (Gen. 18:13-14)"Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and theearth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there isnothing too hard for thee." (Jer. 32:17)"Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there anything too hard for me?" (Jer. 32:27)"And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceiveda son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her,who was called barren. For with God nothing shall beimpossible." (Luke 1:36-37)"Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantlyabove all that we ask or think, according to the power thatworketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church by ChristJesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen." (Eph.3:20-21)"He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for usall, how shall he not with him also freely give us allthings?" (Rom. 8:32)"Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find;knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one thatasketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to himthat knocketh it shall be opened. Or what man is there ofyou, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or

10if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If ye then, beingevil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, howmuch more shall your Father which is in heaven give goodthings to them that ask him?" (Matt. 7:7-11)"And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I sayunto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name,he will give it you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in myname: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may befull." (John 16:23-24)"And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, thatthe Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask anything in my name, I will do it." (1 John 5:14-15)"And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day andnight unto him, though he bear long with them? I tell youthat he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when theSon of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?" (Luke18:7-8)"Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passedinto the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast ourprofession. For we have not an high priest which cannot betouched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in allpoints tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let ustherefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we mayobtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need."(Heb. 4:14-16)

For ye have not received the spirit ofbondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit ofadoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. Depression“O my God, my soul is cast down within me: thereforewill I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of theHermonites, from the hill Mizar. Deep calleth unto deepat the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thybillows are gone over me. Yet the LORD will commandhis lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night hissong shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God ofmy life. I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thouforgotten me? why go I mourning because of theoppression of the enemy? As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while they say daily untome, Where is thy God? As it is written, For thysake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted assheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we aremore than conquerors through him that loved us. For I16

Distressam persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, northings to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any othercreature, shall be able to separate us from the love ofGod, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Rom. 8:35-39)“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: formy strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladlytherefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that thepower of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I takepleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, inpersecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when Iam weak, then am I strong.” (2 Cor. 12:9-10)"For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of ourtrouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressedout of measure, above strength, insomuch that wedespaired even of life: But we had the sentence of deathin ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but inGod which raiseth the dead: Who delivered us from sogreat a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that hewill yet deliver us; Ye also helping together by prayer forus, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means ofmany persons thanks may be given by many on ourbehalf." (Heb. 10:23)"Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hathgreat recompence of reward. For ye have need ofpatience, that, after ye have done the will of God, yemight receive the promise. The effectual ferventprayer of a righteous man availeth much. Elias was aman subject to like passions as we are, and he prayedearnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on theearth by the space of three years and sixmonths.” (James 5:14-17)“For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world:and this is the victory that overcometh the world, evenour faith.” (1 John 5:4)“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by theword of God.” (Rom. 10:17)19

Fruitfulness"I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he takethaway: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it,that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are cleanthrough the word which I have spoken unto you. Abidein me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit ofitself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, exceptye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: Hethat abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forthmuch fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a manabide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and iswithered; and men gather them, and cast them into thefire, and they are burned. If ye abide in me, and mywords abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shallbe done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified, that yebear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples."(John 15:1-8)"Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, andordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, andthat your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shallask of the Father in my name, he may give it you."(John 15:16)“Say not ye, There are yet four months, and thencometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up youreyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already toharvest. And he that reapeth receiveth wages, andgathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that sowethand he that reapeth may rejoice together. And herein isthat saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth. Isent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour:other men laboured, and ye are entered into theirlabours.” (John 4:35-38)24

Fruitfulness“The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: heshallow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those that be plantedin the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts ofour God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; theyshall be fat and flourishing.” (Psalms 92:12-14)25
