2018 Annual Report

Dear Friends,The year 2018 marked the final full calendar year of the Dallas Holocaust Museum/Center for Educationand Tolerance before we opened the new Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum on September18, 2019. We witnessed an exciting year where we found new ways to reach out to members, supporters, students, educators, and the greater North Texas community. During our final year at the 211 N. Record Street location, we saw 86,843 visitors, including36,512 students and teachers. In addition, 7,178 guests attended the Museum's programs andevents, bringing our grand total of visitors for the year to 94,021.Thanks to the Museum Experience Fund, 17,000 students from Dallas Independent SchoolDistrict and East Texas were provided scholarships and able to visit the Museum. Our membership numbers climbed to 1,350 members, a 17% increase over 2017.Our Business Partner program and major giving society, Chesed Society, both increased to 24corporate members and 24 annual donors to the Museum. We launched the Fort Worth City-Wide Read and Performance where 6,530 students from FortWorth ISD attended performances by Mona Golabek, pianist and author of The Children ofWillesden Lane. Teachers and students studied the book prior to the performances shown at theend of the year. Two award-winning exhibitions were presented: Manzanar: The Wartime Photographs of AnselAdams and Let Me Be Myself: The Life Story of Anne Frank. The Upstander Speaker Series featured a panel discussion about Sex Trafficking in North Texas;Christian Picciolini, a reformed neo-Nazi and founder of World Without Hate; and Dr. EfraimZuroff, a world-renowned Nazi Hunter. The Civil Discourse Series featured three panel discussions that explored multiple sides of athought-provoking topic through respectful discussion. Topics included Mandatory MinimumSentencing, Paths Out of Poverty, and Free Speech on College Campuses. We honored UT President Gregory L. Fenves at our Hope for Humanity Dinner and had one ofour most successful events in the history of the Museum. Finally, the “Building a Foundation of Hope” Capital Campaign reached a major milestone by holding theTopping Off Ceremony in June where we added the last beam to the structure of the Dallas Holocaustand Human Rights Museum. An incredible moment in our Museum’s history, the ceremony includedremarks from Thear Suzuki, Board Member and Cambodian Genocide Survivor, and The HonorableFlorence Donald Shapiro, Chairperson of the Board and second-generation Holocaust Survivor. Survivorsof Rwandan and Cambodian genocides, and Museum members attended this momentous event. The Museum’s mission to teach the history of the Holocaust and advance human rights to combatprejudice, hatred, and indifference will continue to reach the greater community, both locally andnationally, in our new Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum. The tremendous support we havereceived from our members, donors, and our city have made a 40 year dream a reality. We cannot wait to see how the new Museum further impacts our city and the students who visit tolearn the lessons of the Holocaust and what it teaches us about human rights in our world today. With our deepest appreciation,Mary Pat Higgins, President and CEOThe Honorable Florence Donald Shapiro, Chairperson
