Wishful Thinking? The first checklist of Ohio birds was published by Jared Kirtland in 1838, and included 222 species. In 1968, ornithologistMilton B. Trautman produced a list reporting 344 naturallyoccurring species.Bruce Peterjohn’s book Birds of Ohio appeared in 1987 andincluded 387 species. This checklist includes 427 species, andit will keep growing. One or two new birds are added to theOhio list each year on average. The following 20 species havebeen reported in adjacent states multiple times, but have notyet been found in Ohio. Keep your binoculars clean and youreyes peeled!Ash-throated FlycatcherGreat CormorantBand-rumped Storm-PetrelGull-billed TernBand-tailed PigeonInca DoveBlack-chinned HummingbirdLewis’s WoodpeckerBroad-billed HummingbirdRoseate TernChestnut-collared LongspurSage ThrasherDovekieSlaty-backed GullFerruginous HawkVirginia WarblerFork-tailed FlycatcherWhite-tailed KiteGray KingbirdYellow-billed LoonYOU CAN HELP!Please help support conservation in Ohio, and protectionof Ohio’s birds.
