Greetings from LizEach season brings different weather, hours of light and different behaviors! But my favorite seasonis Fall. I love Fall – the weather, the colors and the food! However, autumn marks the transitionfrom summer to winter as the duration of daylight becomes noticeably shorter and the temperaturecools considerably! But it also brings stunning scenery, cozy sweaters, outdoor adventures, and thestart of the holiday season. I’m going to give you some reasons why fall is wonderful. The Food! Pumpkin pie or apple pie may be the first autumn desserts that come to mind when youthink about fall. Or maybe it’s pumpkin spice lattes – or other pumpkin spice goodies. Fall is theperfect time to sit down with a hot bowl of soup, stew or chili!! And you've no doubt heard the expression that "an apple a day keeps the doctor away." The fact is, it kind of does. Apples boast a tonof health benefits, from encouraging weight loss to lowering your risk of diabetes to helping yourheart and brain. So embrace the fall season by adding a daily apple (or a cup of hot applet cider) toyour diet. The Colors!! - “Leaf peeping” and the brilliant colors. Actually fall colors are due to the chlorophyl which causes the green color breaking down and allowing the red and yellow pigments toshine through - like the Maple which is so vibrant. I used to live out East in Connecticut and tourism goes through the roof in the fall, similar to Door County in Wisconsin. Whether you can describe it or not, everyone knows fall has a distinct scent and part of that is due to the leaves. Remember when you were a kid, raking leaves and then jumping in them. Oh such joy!!Football! – Nothing says fall more than football. The tailgating, the rivalries, the cheering underthe Friday night lights at a high school, college or professional football game.Bird Watching! Birds spend most of the fall migrating. Whether traveling from one state to another, from North America to South America or from the North Pole to the South Pole, many birdsspend this season traveling to mating grounds or finding food. Many people are like the birds andtend to travel to warmer states to avoid our Wisconsin winters.Being Outside! The fall, when leaves are changing color and the air is a bit crisper, is arguably thebest time to get out in nature, kick up your heels, and keep warm by the light of the campfire. Andwho could forget the Harvest Moon – which is spectacular.Fall also ushers in cold and flu season which none of us like. The CDC has updated its guidanceto reflect what is happening in our country right now. First, it’s important to recognize that the bestline of defense remains the available vaccines – those who are vaccinated are far less likely to contract COVID-19, even the Delta variant, and even less likely than that to end up with severe illnessor in the hospital. Next, the CDC is recommending that communities seeing “Substantial” or“High” transmission of COVID-19 resume universal use of masks in indoor public settings. Wearing a mask is your choice. At this time TCoL is not mandating masks. TCoL wants to see you atthe center, but if you’re not feeling well, please stay home and get better. We want to keep everyone safe and healthy. Happy Leaf Peeping!Liz NeumanExecutive DirectorThompson Center on Lourdes (TCoL) - Celebrating Life After 502331 E.
