December, 202110RESEARCH, TEACHING AND SERVICE INTERESTSMy research continues to be a journey that has been rewarding and enriching. I have been very fortunateto be able to travel between Statistics, environmental health, public health, health service research, clinicaland translational research, health disparity, health informatics, and rural health system and policy inChina. Collaboration in team science settings involving researchers from diverse fields has been aconstant source of synergies, stimulation, and inspiration; not only has it made me an effective teamplayer and an independent investigator with a focus on practice-inspired research focus, it has alsoenabled me to develop a multidisciplinary view of biostatistics as well as science leadership. During myFulbright fellowship in China (2012-2013), I assembled an international and multidisciplinary team tolaunch the Loess Plateau Health Project (LPHP), an 18-year cohort study (2013 -2031) of rural health innorthwestern China Loess Plateau. LPHP aims to study the interplay of economic development, environment, health system and policy in shaping the local health eco-system. The two mountainouscounties where the study is located have over a million farmers living in chronic poverty and arid climate. The study combines an observation arm with interventions on topical issues. Relying on communityparticipatory learning and action approaches, we have implemented multiple interventions funded byinternational agencies and the US and Canadian governments. These include Adaptive Training forVillage Doctors (US State Department, Zhu and Rhyne Co-PI, 11/2020-04/2022); Clean Cook Stoves(China Merchant Charitable Foundation (HK), 01/2020 – 12/2021); Village Clinic Quality Metrics (ChinaMedical Board, 2018-2020); Medical Waste Management and Watershed Protection (NationalGeographic Society, 2015-2016; Canada Fund, 2016 - 2017); Tracking Pesticide and Fertilizer Use (USState Department 2017-2018). My decades of interdisciplinary work in public health has been a rich soilin which I continue to conceive new ideas, fortify conviction, and grow leadership. The possibility ofmake positive changes to marginalized and vulnerable communities continues to inspire me.My interests in data science remains strong at the same time. I was recently awarded a UNMHSC CTSCwicked problem pilot to explore ways to systematically integrate heterogeneous data systems. One of thecase studies in this pilot is to study the impact of non-pharmaceutical mitigation policy on controllingCOID19 outbreak. We used infectious disease transmission models as a pathway to integrate multisectorfactors into a unified system. A direct application of this innovative approach to data integration hascontributed to a NIEHS supplement award to UNM College of Population Health TREE center toinvestigate disparities among frontier and minority communities during COVID19. We are seekingextramural funding to develop a general model framework to guide innovative applications, includingusing the concept of Adverse Outcome Pathways to integrate multi-streams of evidence to supportenvironmental health risk assessment. My teaching philosoph
