From the desk of Rev’d Clive The churches year now enters a period known as ‘AllSaints to Advent’, sometimes also called ‘Kingdom Season’.We begin as All Saints’ Day celebrates men and women inwhose lives the Church as a whole has seen the grace ofGod powerfully at work. The Commemoration of theFaithful Departed on All Souls Day, celebrates the saints ina more local and intimate key. It allows us to rememberwith thanksgiving before God those whom we have knownmore directly: those who gave us life, or who nurtured usin faith. Remembrance Sunday goes on to explore thetheme of memory, both corporate and individual, as weconfront issues of war and peace, loss and self-gift,memory and forgetting. All are reminders of that through baptism we becomemembers one of another in Christ, members of a companyof saints whose mutual belonging transcends death:One family, we dwell in him,one Church, above, beneath;though now divided by the stream, the narrow stream of death.(Charles Wesley)The cycle of the church year goes on to explore theKingship of Christ together with the theme of judgement.Common Worship describes this season by saying2

“Redemption is a work of God’s grace; it is God whoredeems us in Christ and there is nothing to be done beyondwhat Christ has done. But we still wait for the finalconsummation of God’s new creation in Christ; those whoare Christ’s, whether or not they have passed throughdeath, are joined in prayer that God’s kingdom will berevealed finally and in all its fullness.”The annual cycle of the Church’s year now ends with theFeast of Christ the King. The year that begins with the hopeof the coming Messiah ends with the proclamation of hisuniversal sovereignty. The ascension of Christ has revealedhim to be Lord of earth and heaven, and final judgement isone of his proper kingly purposes. As November draws to a close we then celebrate the Feastof St Andrew as one of our Patronal Festivals. A Galileanfisherman, mending his nets, when Jesus calls him to follow, which he promptly did, and went on to become one of theApostles. Tradition has him going on a number of missionaryjourneys before eventually being martyred on an X shapedcross. On the evening of that same Sunday we mark the beginningof Advent with Advent Carols, and so the cycle of thechurches year begins again as we prepare for the coming ofJesus as Messiah.3

Readings for NovemberWednesday 3rd NovemberRomans 13.8-10Psalm 112Luke 14.25-33Sunday 7th November (Third Sunday before Advent)CollectGod, our refuge and strength, bring near the day when wars shall ceaseand poverty and pain shall end, that earth may know the peace of heaventhrough Jesus Christ our Lord.Amen.Old Testament Reading: Jonah 3.1-5,103The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying, 2‘Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim toit the message that I tell you.’ 3So Jonah set out and went toNineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh wasan exceedingly large city, a three days’ walk across. 4Jonahbegan to go into the city, going a day’s walk. And he cried out,‘Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!’ 5And thepeople of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, andeveryone, great and small, put on sackcloth.10When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evilways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he hadsaid he would bring upon them; and he did not do it.New Testament Reading: Hebrews 9.24-2824For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made by human hands, amere copy of the true one, but he entered into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. 25Nor was12

it to offer himself again and again, as the high priest enters theHoly Place year after year with blood that is not his own; 26forthen he would have had to suffer again and again since thefoundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once forall at the end of the age to remove sin by the sacrifice ofhimself. 27And just as it is appointed for mortals to die once, and after that the judgement, 28so Christ, having been offeredonce to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not todeal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.Gospel Reading Mark 1.14-2014Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God,15and saying, ‘The time isfulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, andbelieve in the good news.’16 As Jesus passed along the Sea ofGalilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a netinto the lake—for they were fishermen. 17And Jesus said tothem, ‘Follow me and I will make you fish for people.’ 18Andimmediately they left their nets and followed him. 19As he wenta little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brotherJohn, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20Immediatelyhe called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boatwith the hired men, and followed him.Post Communion PrayerGod of peace, whose Son Jesus Christ proclaimed the kingdomand restored the broken to wholeness of life:look with compassion on the anguish of the world, and by your healing powermake whole both people and nations;through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.AmenPsalm 62.5-1213

Wednesday 10th NovemberWisdom 6.1-11 orTitus 3.1-7Psalm 82 or23Luke 17.11-19Sunday 14th November (Remembrance Sunday)CollectAlmighty Father, whose will is to restore all things in thybeloved Son, the King of all: govern the hearts and minds ofthose in authority and bring the families of the nations, dividedand torn apart by the ravages of sin, to be subject to his justand gentle rule; who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unityof the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.Amen.Old Testament reading: Daniel 12.1–31‘At that time Michael, the great prince, the protector of yourpeople, shall arise. There shall be a time of anguish, such ashas never occurred since nations first came into existence. Butat that time your people shall be delivered, everyone who isfound written in the book. 2Many of those who sleep in the dustof the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some toshame and everlasting contempt. 3Those who are wise shallshine like the brightness of the sky, and those who lead manyto righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.New Testament reading: Hebrews 10.11–14 [15–18]19–2511And every priest stands day after day at his service, offeringagain and again the same sacrifices that can never take awaysins. 12But when Christ had offered for all time a singlesacrifice for sins, ‘he sat down at the right hand of God’, 13andsince then has been waiting ‘until his enemies would be madea footstool for his feet.’ 14For by a single offering he has14

perfected for all time those who are sanctified.[ 15And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying,16‘This is the covenant that I will make with them after thosedays, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I willwrite them on their minds’,17he also adds, ‘I will remember theirsins and their lawless deeds no more.’18Where there isforgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.]19Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter thesanctuary by the blood of Jesus, 20by the new and living waythat he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through hisflesh), 21and since we have a great priest over the house ofGod, 22let us approach with a true heart in full assurance offaith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscienceand our bodies washed with pure water. 23Let us hold fast tothe confession of our hope without wavering, for he who haspromised is faithful. 24And let us consider how to provoke oneanother to love and good deeds, 25not neglecting to meettogether, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.Gospel reading: Mark 13.1–81As he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him,‘Look, Teacher, what large stones and what largebuildings!’ 2Then Jesus asked him, ‘Do you see these greatbuildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all willbe thrown down.’3 When he was sitting on the Mount of Olivesopposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew askedhim privately, 4‘Tell us, when will this be, and what will be thesign that all these things are about to be accomplished?’ 5ThenJesus began to say to them, ‘Beware that no one leads youastray. 6Many will come in my name and say, “I am he!” andthey will lead many astray. 7When you hear of wars andrumours of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, butthe end is still to come. 8For nation will rise against nation, andkingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in variousplaces; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of thebirth pangs.15

Post Communion PrayerHoly and blessed God,you have fed us with the body and blood of your Sonand filled us with your Holy Spirit:may we honour you,not only with our lipsbut in lives dedicated to the serviceof Jesus Christ our Lord.Amen.Psalm 16Wednesday 17th November2 Maccabees 7.1, 20-31 or Revelation 4Psalm 116.10-end or 150Luke 19.11-28Sunday 21st November (Christ the King)CollectGod the Father, help us to hear the call of Christ the Kingand to follow in his service, whose kingdom has no end;for he reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, one glory.Amen.Old Testament reading: Daniel 7.9–10,13,149As I watched, thrones were set in place, and an Ancient Onetook his throne; his clothing was white as snow, and the hair ofhis head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames, and itswheels were burning fire.10 A stream of fire issued and flowedout from his presence. A thousand thousand served him, andten thousand times ten thousand stood attending him. The court16

sat in judgement, and the books were opened. 13As I watched inthe night visions, I saw one like a human being coming with theclouds of heaven. And he came to the Ancient One and waspresented before him.14 To him was given dominion and gloryand kingship, that all peoples, nations, and languages shouldserve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall notpass away, and his kingship is one that shall never bedestroyed.New Testament reading: Revelation 1.4b–84John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you andpeace from him who is and who was and who is to come, andfrom the seven spirits who are before his throne, 5and fromJesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, andthe ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us andfreed us from our sins by his blood, 6and made us to be akingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be gloryand dominion for ever and ever. Amen. 7 Look! He is comingwith the clouds; every eye will see him, even those who piercedhim; and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail.So it is to be. Amen.8 ‘I am the Alpha and the Omega’, says theLord God, who is and who was and who is to come, theAlmighty.Gospel reading: John 18.33–3733Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summonedJesus, and asked him, ‘Are you the King of the Jews?’ 34Jesusanswered, ‘Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell youabout me?’ 35Pilate replied, ‘I am not a Jew, am I? Your ownnation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. Whathave you done?’ 36Jesus answered, ‘My kingdom is not fromthis world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followerswould be fighting to keep me from being handed over to theJews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.’ 37Pilate askedhim, ‘So you are a king?’ Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am aking. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, totestify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens tomy voice.’17

Post Communion PrayerStir up, O Lord, the wills of your faithful people;that they, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works, may by you be plenteously rewarded;through Jesus Christ our Lord.Amen.Psalm 93Wednesday 24th NovemberDaniel 5.1-6, 13-14, 16-17, 23-28Canticle: Benedicite 4-5Luke 21.12-19Sunday 28th November (St Andrew’s Patronal Festival)CollectAlmighty God,who gave such grace to your apostle Saint Andrewthat he readily obeyed the call of your Son Jesus Christand brought his brother with him:call us by your holy word, and give us grace to follow you without delayand to tell the good news of your kingdom;through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you,in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.Amen.Old Testament reading: Isaiah 52.7–107How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of themessenger who announces peace, who brings good news, whoannounces salvation, who says to Zion, ‘Your God reigns.’8Listen! Your sentinels lift up their voices, together they sing for18

joy; for in plain sight they see the return of the Lord to Zion.9Break forth together into singing, you ruins of Jerusalem;for the Lord has comforted his people, he has redeemedJerusalem.10 The Lord has bared his holy arm before the eyesof all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see thesalvation of our God.New Testament reading: Romans 10.12–1812For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the sameLord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. 13For,‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’14But how are they to call on one in whom they have notbelieved? And how are they to believe in one of whom theyhave never heard? And how are they to hear without someoneto proclaim him? 15And how are they to proclaim him unlessthey are sent? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet ofthose who bring good news!’ 16But not all have obeyed the goodnews; for Isaiah says, ‘Lord, who has believed ourmessage?’ 17So faith comes from what is heard, and what isheard comes through the word of Christ.18 But I ask, have theynot heard? Indeed they have; for ‘Their voice has gone out to allthe earth, and their words to the ends of the world.’Gospel reading: Matthew 4.18–2218As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers,Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting anet into the lake—for they were fishermen. 19And he said tothem, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fish forpeople.’ 20Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21Ashe went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son ofZebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their fatherZebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. 22Immediatelythey left the boat and their father, and followed him.19
