‘Meeting her you would never know she’s been through this ordeal.She’s friendly, she jokes. She also has a real innocence in her eyes’now working on recapturing thebond between them. Living at anundisclosed location, they spendtheir days talking, reading andcooking together. “There doesn’tseem to be a moment of tensionbetween the girls and mom – theywere all very loving and respectful,”said a friend.Family spokeswoman Erika PriceSchulte told US magazine People: “Terryfeels as if, after 18 years, she doesn’twant to let Jaycee out of her sight.”Jaycee, too, has expressed her joy atbeing reunited with Terry and herhalf-sister Shayna, 19, who was just atoddler when her sister went missing.“I’m so happy to be back with myfamily,” she said.Added family lawyer McGregorScott: “She is very upbeat, giddy thatshe’s with her family. She smiles a lot.”Jaycee’s daughters Angel, 15, andStarlit, 11, are also adjusting to theirnew surroundings. They had beenbrought up to believe that Jaycee wastheir big sister. “The girls haveaccepted that Jaycee is their mother,”a source told HELLO!. “Because of theunconditional, protective love sheshowed them when they thought shewas their big sister, it’s more a case ofswitching titles – the love is still there.”The girls are not being identifiedin these photographs – doctors donot believe they are ready for publicattention. She also has a real innocence inher eyes.”She has also overcome the pallorof her captivity and looks muchyounger than her years. The brightyoung woman and her mother,school secretary Terry Probyn, areA TRUE MIRACLEStarlit and Angel had grown upcalling Phillip Garrido “Dad” andbelieving that his wife Nancy was theirmother. The girls lived in filthy tentsand windowless sheds hidden by treesin the couple’s backyard and hadnever seen a school or a doctor. TheGarridos now face 29 chargesincluding kidnap, false imprisonmentand rape. Both plead not guilty.Jaycee herself received noeducation after being kidnapped.“But clearly, Jaycee, self-taught, hasdone a remarkable job educating herdaughters – a true miracle,” a friendtold HELLO !. Recent tests showedthat the girls have high levels ofintelligence, equivalent to those ofschool-educated children. They arenow being home schooled.“I can tell you they are adjustingamazingly well,” added the source.“They are smart, playful, funny girls.But they are also ver y caring andprotective of each other – maybe areflection of how it was for them incaptivity.”The family is receiving intensivetherapy sessions and acknowledgesthat the road ahead won’t be easy.Part of their treatment hasincluded horse riding sessions withTerr y and Shayna, organised by atherapist and designed to encouragetrust and familiarity. The freedom ofriding a horse in the fresh air is astark contrast to the life they ledbefore. “Jaycee has a horse, Oreo,that she has bonded with –something important to herrecovery,” says a friend.While Angel and Starlit are

In August,Phillip took them to the campus ofthe University of California, Berkeley,where he was tr ying to arrange anevent for a religious group calledGod’s Desire.Lisa Campbell, manager of theUniversity of California PoliceDepartment special events unit, metthe family and felt the girls “didn’tlook right”. Phillip’s behaviourseemed erratic, while Starlit andAngel seemed “sullen and sub missive”, she said.Lisa arranged a meeting for thefollowing day, accompanied this timeby University Police Officer AllyJacobs, who had done a check anddiscovered Phillip’s criminal background – he had been convicted ofrape and imprisonment in 1976, butreleased on parole after 11 years. Allyshared her colleague’s concerns. “Icouldn’t get over the intense stare ofthe younger girl, like she was lookinginto my soul,” she said, adding that“police intuition” combined with“mother’s intuition” spurred her onto find out more. She called Phillip’sparole officer and arranged for thefamily to come into a local paroleoffice.Phillip arrived with his wife, Jayceeand the girls. “They took Jaycee inanother room and she told them thewhole stor y,” said her stepgrandmother Wilma Probyn.Soon after wards, policecalled Terry with the incredible71
