It’shard to imagine. Words are a basic building block of communication, and astrong vocabulary is an essential part ofreading, writing, and speaking well. Thepurpose of this book is to help learnersexpand the number of words they knowand the ways in which they use them.Although 240 vocabulary words are introduced, many more words and meaningsare woven into the book’s 24 lessons.Learning new words is not just aboutencountering them; it’s about usingthem, exploring them, and thinkingabout them. So the lessons in this bookare organized around different aspectsand attributes of words—related meanings, how words are formed, wherewords come from, acronyms, homophones, homographs, word parts, clips,blends, and much more. Tips for Using the Lessons: Be aware of pronunciation differences whenteaching homographs. Not all students maypronounce words in the same way and thiscan lead to confusion.240 Vocabulary Words 5th Grade Kids Need to Know Linda Ward Beech, Scholastic Teaching Resources Many words have more than one meaning,including some that are not given in the lesson. You may want to point out additionalmeanings or invite students to discoverthem independently. Use the words to teach syllabication rules. Many words can be used as more than onepart of speech. Again, you can expand students’ vocabulary by drawing attention tosuch usage. Use the words to teach related spelling andgrammar rules. Encourage students to make semantic mapsfor some words. For instance, students mightorganize a map for a noun to show what theword is, what it is like, what it is not like,and include some examples of the word. As you go over the exercises with students,discuss all the choices that are given andwhy some of them are the wrong answers.In some cases, students may have to look upwords in order to determine if a choice iscorrect or not. Have students illustrate some words. Help students make connections by pointingout lesson words used in other contexts andmaterials. Have students complete the Writing to Learnactivities in a notebook or journal so theyhave a specific place where they can refer toand review words. Talk about other forms of a word, for example optimum, optimistic, optimist, optimally.Encourage students to word build in thisfashion. Consider having students make a set of wordcards for each lesson, or make a class setand place it in your writing center. Have students locate places on a world mapwhen studying words from other languages. Build word family lists with words based onmajor phonograms such as fan, champ, ormike. Have students categorize words. Don’t hesitate to add your own writingassignments. The more students use a word,the more likely they are to “own” it.TIP Encourage students to consult more thanone reference and to compare information.Consider having students fill out Word Inventory Sheetsbefore each lesson.
