This directory is intended as a resource forindividuals, landowners, forestry workers, andcounty officials who want to learn more about islandwood products and the local businesses that areutilizing our unique forest resources.The San Juan islands are seeing a renewed interest ingrowing, harvesting, and building with local trees.The businesses in this directory offer a viablealternative to mainland wood products for all typesof projects. Our thin soils and scant rain meanslower growing trees with tight clear grain, perfectfor trim, flooring, and furniture. Many local houses,barns, and sheds are clad in rough sawn local boardsoften from the land where the building sits. Thearchitects and builders in this directory have createdbuildings entirely from local timber with beautifulresults.Historically the islands had a booming timberindustry as the forests were cleared for farm landand our harbors made easy access to barge the logsto mill. As the resources were exhausted theeconomy shifted and it’s only in recent years that theforests have regrown sufficiently to offer high qualitytimber at economically viable scales.
