January 2018Rotary: Making a DifferenceAledo Club – Program Highlights Local Antique ShopMartin “Mac” McGee, Club President, Rotary Club of AledoThe program for the Aledo Rotary Club on January 25th 01-25-18Derrwood (Derr) Ruggles, who with Dottie run an Antique shop hre inAledo.Derr mainly refurbishes Antique furniture at home for the shop. He alsoappraises furniture on request, to see if repairs and refinishing is possible. He brought with him a large plastic tub that held several types of castorrollers for furniture cabinets. All or most of the old furniture had castorson them to help move the item into place. The wheel components of thecastors were made out of oak, walnut, steel and glass that looks likeporcelain. Also knobs and handles are in demand for this type offurniture, when people want to restore the cabinets to original.Myth buster: “Not all kitchen cabinets are Hoosier” Although we referthem as such.He is currently working on a Hoosier kitchen cabinet. On the cabinet, hefound a label dated 1919.Hinges, latches and other hardware have brand names and can be datedon their Patent date. They did not have patent numbers but patent dates on items of that period. You can findcompanies still in business, that made the original hardware and locks for the cabinets. He has several stories about the different pieces of furniture he has restored and what it took to bring it back to itsoriginal look.Make sure you have a good idea of what needs to be done for the repair and refinishing of antique furniture.ROTARY DISTRICT 64604-WAY TODAY - PAGE 10

We need YOUR CLUB to sponsor futureleaders from your area high school(s) to attend this event! The Bradley Rotaract Club has been working on programming for several months and will provide a varietyof plenary and breakout sessions designed to promote and enhance leadership skills, citizenship, and personalgrowth. District 6460 Rotarian (trained/experienced) volunteers will be in attendance throughout the weekend. Youth Exchange Inbound Students will be sponsored by the Youth Exchange and RYLA Committees.
