From the DeanI am pleased to welcome you toThe Undergraduate School of Universityof Maryland Global Campus (formerlyUniversity of Maryland University College)for the 2019–2020 academic year.On July 1, 2019, our name was officiallychanged from UMUC to University ofMaryland Global Campus by an act ofthe Maryland State General Assemblyto better reflect our position as a stateuniversity with a global footprint. Thenew name reveals our values, goals, and commitment to servingstudents across the world, as we have done since 1947. It reflects bothour rich history as a University System of Maryland institution and ourenduring mission to serve students in Maryland, the United States,and in the global community.Our new website—umgc.edu—is now up and running, but if you lookfor us under the old URL, you will be redirected to the new. You maynotice that the e-mail addresses provided here still say “umuc”;e-mail addresses won’t be updated until early in the new year andwill continue to be valid for some months after that.This catalog is a tool for you to chart your path to your degree. The Undergraduate SchoolThe mission of The UndergraduateSchool at UMGC is to provide openaccess to quality undergraduate educational opportunities to individualsaround the world, including residents of the state of Maryland, members of the U.S. Armed Services, andnational and international studentspursuing a university educationon-site and online. The universityseeks to produce graduates whoare well prepared to be responsiblecitizens in a global society, as well aseffective participants in the complex,fast-changing world of work.The Undergraduate School iscommitted to meeting your needsfor lifelong learning by providinginnovative delivery of high-qualityeducational programs, ensuring substantive and relevant curricula, andrecognizing the value of experiential learning. At the undergraduatelevel, UMGC offers the Associate ofArts (limited to certain populations,detailed on p. 83), the Bachelorof Arts, the Bachelor of Science, theBachelor of Science in Nursing, andthe Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies degrees, as well asfive undergraduate certificates.PREPARING CITIZENSFOR THE FUTUREUMGC strives to prepare you to beeffective professionals and citizensin your organizations, communities,and families. We value the contributions of both a broad-based education and specific disciplines to theundergraduate experience, so weprovide context from other disciplines to illuminate academic content and analytical approaches in allprograms to complement practice.Instruction and curricula at UMGCare based on the belief that certainabilities are the hallmarks of successful learning. UMGC expectsyou to demonstrate knowledgeand skills not only in your chosenmajor but also in critical analysis,reasoning, and problem solving;the use of technology; key conceptsand principles of the natural, social,and behavioral sciences; effectivecommunication and informationliteracy; and mathematical andquantitative reasoning. These arethe hallmarks of a UMGC undergraduate education, and they areinstilled through a broad foundationin general education and integratedinto a strong and focused majorarea of study. Your mastery of theseabilities is planned and assessedthroughout your program of study.General education coursework isnot just the lens through whichyou learn about different academicdisciplines and how they see theworld; it is also how you experiencepractical applications of foundational skills and concepts and makeconnections among different approaches and applications. UMGC’srequirements for general educationcoursework conform to Marylandrequirements and are broadlyaccommodating of your interestsand transfer credit. However, TheUndergraduate School recommendsspecific courses to fulfill generaleducation requirements you havenot already completed. Thesecourses are designed to help youacquire a grounding in the arts,humanities, and sciences by studying and applying the principles ofthese disciplines through concretecases and examples.For your core studies, you maychoose one of 33 majors from awide variety of academic fields.Academic minors are available in41 different areas. All the majorsand minors have been reviewed andrevised in consultation with faculty,employers, professional and educational organizations, and otherexperts in the field. These academicprograms prepare you for the modern workplace and also help thoseof you who are currently employedto put your current knowledge intoa broader context.Recognizing the importance oflifelong learning, UMGC also offersseveral undergraduate certificatesof value in the workplace for careeradvancement.SERVING ADULT STUDENTSUMGC welcomes and helps allstudents achieve their educationalgoals but has a special focus onthe needs of working adult students. Currently, the median agefor undergraduate students is32 years old.In recognition of the diverse educational goals and aspirations of itsstudents, the university uses a variety of strategies to make sure youhave access to courses and to makecompleting your degree easier.Knowing that adult students bringexperience as well as a willingnessto learn, UMGC acknowledges thevalue of that experience by incorporating the assessment of nontraditional learning in the evaluation ofstudents. Since adult students mayhave gained college-level learningfrom multiple sources, UMGC offers a number of innovative creditoptions that recognize the learning achieved through work and lifeexperience and accelerate progresstoward the degree. The Undergraduate School, Continued . . .offers credit for new learning inthe workplace, and Prior Learning,which offers credit for college-levellearning acquired through previous work or life experience. UMGCalso accepts credit from communitycollege coursework and a varietyof other sources, including militaryservice and credit by examination(described on pp. 206–208).UMGC understands the demandsof balancing work, family, andstudy and responds by offeringundergraduate classes at convenient locations and times, includingevenings and weekends. Coursesare also provided online and in ahybrid format that combines on-siteand online delivery, with staggeredsession dates. The continual growthin undergraduate enrollments atUMGC testifies to the convenience,flexibility, and substantive content ofits academic offerings in all formats.EDUCATIONAL RELATIONSHIPSUMGC is dedicated to collaboration and cooperation with otherMaryland educational institutions,both public and private, and activelyseeks relationships with thoseinstitutions to benefit Marylandcitizens. For more than 70 years,UMGC has proudly served the U.S.military through its educationalaffiliations in Europe and Asia. Theuniversity also reaches out througheducational collaborations aroundthe world.In support of the university’s mission to extend access to educationalopportunities to Maryland’s workingadult students, UMGC has formedalliances with all 16 Maryland community colleges, enabling studentsto earn an associate degree at anallied community college and finish6a bachelor’s degree by completing required coursework at UMGC.These Maryland alliances offera seamless transition betweencurricula through linked degreeprograms. Each of the Marylandcommunity colleges is visited regularly by UMGC representatives. Inaddition to online options, numerous class locations in Maryland andthe Washington, D.C., area enablealliance students to complete bachelor’s degrees conveniently close tohome. Special UMGC scholarshipsare also available for graduates ofMaryland community colleges.In addition, UMGC has establishedalliance agreements with more than70 community colleges across theUnited States. BACHELOR’S DEGREEREQUIREMENTSAt the undergraduate level, UMGC offers the Bachelor of Arts(BA), Bachelor of Science (BS), Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), and Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies(BTPS) degrees, as well as five certificates. The BSN programis available only to students who have an associate degreein nursing or a diploma from a registered nursing educationprogram that is recognized by the appropriate state board ofnursing and who reside in and have an active, unencumberednursing license in an approved state.* The BTPS degree is available only to students who have earned the Associate of AppliedScience degree from a community college with which UMGChas an
