COLORADOPORTRAIT and BIOGRAPHYINDEXGathered and arranged from Histories, Magazines,Newspaper Files, Land Records, many other sources1931, 1932, 1933, Denver, by Henrietta E. Bromwell.

Old house, once known as 319 Arapahoe Avenue, Auraria. It still stands, but changedand trees removed, on lot 11, Block 65 (of old Auraria Town Company‟s map.) It was one of theearly spots inhabited in Denver in 1859.George Hawkxhurst bought the lot of the Town Company for 1.00 in Nov. of that yearof his arrival and sold it with his cabin in 1861 to Aaron S. Haines for 150.00 so it wasprobably a good cabin, for most cabins sold for 50.00. But the demand for homes caused it tobe sold again in 1862 to H.W. Gillet and he and his wife Emma and the next year sold it toGeorge Brand and wife Carrie Brand, and they sold in year 1863 to Mrs. Clara J. Cook of Idaho,Clear Creek Co. who wished to be near her friend Mrs. Daniel Witter on corner of Larimer St.and Arapahoe Avenue, one block distant. But Mrs. Cook sold to Judge O.A. Whittemore in1866 for 500.00 which shows she had improved it very much.Judge Whittemore, whose wife was one of the first university teachers in Colorado livedhere several years, setting out wild plum trees which bore fruit for ten years afterward and wildyellow and black gooseberry bushes, the last still on the place in 1928 though very much reducedin size and not bearing fruit. They also planted wild rose bushes which bloomed for twentyyears later, and “Spider Lilies” and wild larkspur all of which bloomed every season until in1903 the last Lily was taken up in Apr. to set upon the grave of H.P.H. Bromwell at Riverside,he having bought the place in 1871 and died there in January of 1903. The lily never bloomedagain as it was pulled up and thrown away for a weed by one of the ignorant gardeners there. The wild gooseberry bushes still live in the yard of 646 Williams Street; and after transplantingfrom their sisters on the old place one of these bushes in 1927 put forth a little cluster of bloomand made several little black currants. The Cottonwoods, set out in 1866 were removed about 1900 -- or a little before that time.H.E.B.
