UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON169TH COMMENCEMENTThe University of Dayton regards itscommencement exercises as amongthe most important ceremonialoccasions of the academic year. These exercises are filled withsymbols and traditions designed toremind us all of the thousands ofyears that universities have existedand their noble purposes. The academic costumes of variouscolors and types are part of thesymbolism. They are describedon Page 87 of this program. Thebright blue gowns with red trimare worn by those serving asUniversity marshals for today’sceremony (see Pages 3-4 of thisprogram). The marshals wear thesedistinctive gowns as identificationof their official capacity to directthe processionals of administrators, faculty and students who wear themore conventional ceremonial garband mortarboard. The chief University marshalcarries the University mace, andthe president wears the president’smedallion. On stage are the UnitedStates and papal flags. So, too,the music that is played and thewords that are spoken have specialsignificance. For example, thedeans who have been responsiblefor the education of the students“present” the students as worthy ofgraduation to the president. In turn, the president confers the degrees onbehalf of the University. At our commencement ceremonies, which differ from manyuniversities’, each student’s nameis read, and the president thencongratulates that student. TheUniversity believes that this is animportant part of the graduationceremony. The University alsohas a tradition of faculty comingfrom their seats behind the stageto congratulate the graduatingstudents. These traditionssymbolize the caring and personoriented spirit of the University. The University hopes you willboth enjoy and respect thiscommencement. You can do both bystanding for the invocation and thenational anthem, by listening duringthe awarding of the degrees andby standing to sing the Universityof Dayton anthem (see Page 87).We are the University of Daytoncommunity, a community whichrespects and cares for each other. This 169th Commencement marksanother beginning. Let us rejoicetogether.
