REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR STUDENTSGrades 9-12As a student enrolled in Niceville High School, you are given the opportunity to select courseseach spring for the following year. It is important that you involve your parents in courseselection, that you make certain you meet the prerequisites, and that you keep high schoolgraduation requirements and career objectives in mind. This guide is designed to aid you inmaking appropriate choices by providing brief program and course descriptions, prerequisites,and other information related to this process. In order to complete registration successfully,you are urged to follow the steps identified below:1. READ the curriculum guide. Curriculum guides are available at your school, with yourSOAR teacher (rising 10th-12th) grade and online at www.nicevillehighschool.org underthe Students tab.2. REVIEW the list of graduation requirements and determine which requirements havebeen met and which courses need to be taken next year. Consider courses which needto be repeated because of lost credit.3. TALK to your parents and teachers about course selections and appropriate academiclevels (general, honors, advanced studies, or vocational) as determined by yourclassroom teacher. General – These courses are designed for in-depth instruction that challengesstudents. These classes are suitable for all students. Honors – These courses are designed for self-motivated students who wish topursue a more challenging curriculum while in high school. Advanced Studies (Advanced Placement/AICE) – These college-level courses aredesigned for highly motivated students who wish to pursue potential collegecredit in high school. Vocational – These courses are designed to prepare students for employmentand/or post-secondary education in a career of their choice.4. SELECT courses that will correspond to or complement your goals for the future.Choose your courses carefully, as requests for schedule changes will only be considered forthe following reasons: Scheduling error (example – request Algebra I and receive Algebra II)Failure to complete a prerequisite course or requirementGraduation or college requirement omitted from scheduleSpecial programs requiring unique schedules (examples – choral, instrumental,vocational, Exceptional Student Education, dual enrollment, Advanced Placement, AICE) Summer School course completion (if summer school is available)4

SCHEDULE CHANGE POLICYNiceville High School’s schedule change policy for the beginning of each semester is as follows:FIRST THREE DAYS OF EACH SEMESTER:The only schedule adjustments allowed are for students who fit one or more of the followingsituations; no routine requests to change classes can be accepted. Students who have no schedule at all – report to Guidance during SOAR Students who have no course during a particular period – report to Guidance duringthat period Students who are scheduled for a class previously completed successfully – check inwith the teacher and report to Guidance that period Seniors who are missing a required class for graduation report to guidance.AFTER THE FIRST THREE DAYS OF THE SEMESTER UNTIL THE END OF THE 4 ½ WEEK OF THESEMESTER: Students must see a guidance counselor to change a schedule. Students may only drop a class to go to a non-credit study hall. NOTE: This will be donewithout penalty (grade will be dropped). Level changes i.e., Honors course to regular course must be requested by subjectteacher only after a parent/teacher conference by phone, e-mail or in person.FROM THE END OF THE 4 ½ WEEK OF THE SEMESTER UNTIL THE END OF THE SEMESTER: Students must see a guidance counselor. Email addresses can be found on our websiteat www.nicevillehighschool.org., or by calling 833-4114 ext. 1312 to speak with acounselor. Students can only drop a class and go to a non-credit study hall. Students will receive a grade of "F" for the semester in dropped class and the course willbe placed on the transcript.REMINDERS: Any request for a teacher change must be made by the parent. Any concern by aparent will require a conference to include the teacher/student/parent/administrator. NHS does not accept specific teacher requests. Administration reserves the right to make necessary changes based on class size andteacher load as determined by the state of Florida class size requirements. As areminder, NHS does not accept specific teacher requests. Schedule change requests are due by the last day of school, May 31, 2019.5

Students with significant cognitive disabilities may earncredits via access courses and be assessed via an alternateassessment. What are the requirements for standard and merit diplomadesignations?What are the public postsecondary options?Scholar Diploma DesignationState University SystemIn addition to meeting the 24-credit standard high schooldiploma requirements a student must:Admission into Florida’s public universities is competitive. Prospectivestudents should complete a rigorous curriculum in high school andapply to more than one university to increase their chance foracceptance. To qualify to enter one of Florida’s public universities, afirst-time-in-college student must meet the following minimumrequirements: High school graduation with a standard diploma Admission test scores 16 credits of college preparatory academic courses 4 English (3 with substantial writing) 4 Mathematics (Algebra 1 level and above) 3 Natural Science (2 with substantial lab) 3 Social Science 2 World Language (sequential, in the same language) 2 approved electives Earn 1 credit in Algebra II;Pass the Geometry EOC;Earn 1 credit in statistics or an equally rigorousmathematics course;Pass the Biology I EOC;Earn 1 credit in chemistry or physics;Earn 1 credit in a course equally rigorous to chemistry orphysics;Pass the U.S. History EOC;Earn 2 credits in the same world language; andEarn at least 1 credit in AP, IB, AICE or a dual enrollmentcourse.A student is exempt from the Biology I or U.S.Historyassessment if the student is enrolled in an AP, IB, or AICEBiology I or U.S.History course and the studentTakes the respective AP, IB, or AICE assessment; and Earns the minimum score to earn college credit. State University System of FloridaThe Florida College SystemIncludes 28 state colleges. Many also offer baccalaureate degrees in high-demandfields.
