ACADEMIC REGALIABRIEF HISTORY OF NCNMAcademic regalia date to the early daysof the oldest universities. A statute of1312 required that all doctors, licentiates and bachelors of the University ofCoimbra, Italy, wear gowns. The shapeand size of the American hood marks thecollege degree of the wearer. It is possibleto recognize the college or universityfrom which the degree was obtained byidentifying the colors on the center of thehood. Gowns for master’s degree holdershave elongated sleeves, while doctoralgowns have velvet striping on the sleevesand down the front.Hoods from the National College ofNatural Medicine are green and whitefor all degree programs: the Doctor ofNaturopathic Medicine; the Master ofScience in Oriental Medicine; the Masterof Acupuncture; and the Master ofScience in Integrative Medicine Research.Dual-degree recipients wear the hood ofthe doctoral degree and a gold cord inrecognition of their master’s degrees.degree program was inaugurated in 1996,followed by a Master of Acupuncture (MAc)degree program in 2008. A Master of Sciencein Integrative Medicine Research degree program was introduced in 2011. The college isalma mater to more than 2,200 alumni whopractice in nearly every state and Canadianprovince, and in many foreign countries.National College of Natural Medicine(NCNM) is the oldest programmaticallyaccredited naturopathic medical school inNorth America.
