In this newsletter, we discuss some of our ongoingcourses and describe some new courses. Read through the newsletter – and feel free to explore coursesnot necessarily in your immediate area. Technology is continually changing and moving in newdirections – go out of your comfort zone to learn a skill for the future! Tap into the Passion & Purposeworkshops running in the spring. And don’t forget to attend one of the many online advising sessions wehave scheduled.NOTE: we are still operating fully remotely! Stay tuned for updates on this status.1And now for the courses --Business Core & Elective Courses:As is the case every semester, all of the corebusiness courses are running. Principles of Finance& Accounting is a general course combining bothCommunication & Leadership 16:137:502finance and accounting (asynchronous online). It isa great business course for new students. The veryMarketing: 16:137:507popular Communication & Leadership is running onMondays (Monday day session for full timeEthics 16:137:500students, and a Monday evening session forstudents that work during the day). This is a greatCapstone 16:137:600class to take when you are beginning to think ofmaking a career move. As part of this class,students will be interviewing leaders in their field or just professionals that they want to impress and meet.Don’t waste this opportunity – make the most of your interviews to further your career - and make sureyou give yourself enough time to make those connections. This class emphasizes our efforts to helpstudents get the most out of their education and to help map out their development plans. This is anopportunity to make a major and lasting impact on your professional future!Finance & Accounting 16:137:530Market Assessment for Business & Science is in asynchronous online mode. This course used to have a classtrip associated to IKEA to see marketing in practice (see here for a blog about the trip). For the pastsemesters we have invited some exciting guest speakers to lecture to our students. We are hoping to goback to Ikea soon!! The 1 credit Ethics course is also offered this semester – it is an asynchronous onlinecourse (but be on the lookout for a panel discussion on ethics and current events!). Finally, the Capstonecourse is offered on Wednesday evenings. Remember – in the capstone course you will be doing apresentation in front of our distinguished guest judges (via zoom). The final presentation is also open to all1In-person courses are operating as “Remote courses”. Some courses will have a Remote-option and an “Online”option. Online coded students should register for the “online” coded courses – usually section 90. Please see theinstructions at mbs.rutgers.edu/topics-There are many different business electives to choose from.Below, the most relevant and popular are highlighted. Thepopular project management course isrunningasynchronously (16:137:601 15019 Special Topics ProjectManagement). This course covers an essential skill found inalmost every science/tech job posting (it may be the mostrequested general skill). For those in Sustainability, we also have the Sustainable Supply Chain/GreenPurchasing course (16:137:606 20641) running. It is a project course led by Prof. Lyons. This is a greatcourse for the engineering management students and the sustainability students (and counts as a sciencecourse). It is open to all other students who want to do a project around sustainability, supply chain andgreen purchasing (especially for food science & global food – Prof. Lyons will be discussing case studiesrelated to the food industry). Students will be working with companies and implementing sustainabilitysolutions. Other great options include Project Management (22:799:691 18651), Supply ChainManagement (22:799:692 18652) – these are RBS courses open to all students (only with those indexnumbers). Students also have the option to take any of Mini-MBA courses (16:137:651 Topics inManagement and Professional Development see sidebar). The Mini-MBA is a popular series of coursesgiven by the Executive Education division of the Rutgers Business School. In addition to the Mini-MBA thereare other executive education classes available (these are labeled “CCPD” and include many tech electivessuch as Certified Ethical Hacker, etc.) – please see the sidebar for more information. Another great electiveis the Business Intelligence with Visual Analytics class. See the description later in this course report.Students can take a professional internship or research internship as either a business or science elective.The internship course has an online component that is taught by Kathleen Cashman (our very ownexecutive coach) as advanced leadership & communication. What is an Externship? This is a design-basedexperience where students work on industry sponsored projects (yes—even working students canparticipate!). Please go to our web site to check it out (attend one of our externship webinars for moreinformation). You can get credit for the project or just do it for experience (participate as “club” – to puton your resume). This is a “hot topic” in education circles (see Forbes article referencing action-basedlearning) which we have been running for many years now. Externship is available to students in allconcentrations (16:137:605 08115). For those inFood: Global Food Supply & Quality Management (16:137:579 15012) is being offered this semester– thiscourse is great for food science, global food technology & personal care science students. Food supply iscertainly a topic very much in the news. Food Business Innovation (16:137:575 15011) is also running – andalso appropriate for personal care and even drug discovery.For Biotech: 16:137:616 NextGen Biotech/Genomics and 16:137:617 Bioinformatics (very important toknow!) are scheduled. Both of these courses are great electives for those in Drug Discovery, Food Science,Personal Care Science and Chemistry. And if you are looking to strengthen your skills in bioinformatics,please also consider taking the python or database courses being offered –see the suggested courses forthe IT concentration online.For Drug Discovery: 16:137:511 Drug Discovery Through Pre-Clinical Development (follow up to 510),16:137:582 Fundamentals of Regulatory Affairs (very popular and VERY RELEVANT), and 16:137:581:90Statistics for Clinical Research (online and has SAS lab component – a skill in demand by employers!) arerunning. SAS is one of the top skills requested by employers in the life science industries. All of these coursesare very applicable to the biotech, personal care and food science concentrations. 16:137:514Fundamentals of Biological Chemistry in the Biotech Industry is a biochemistry course that studiesbiochemical pathways as they relate to the discovery of new drugs in a number of therapeutic areas (suchas Oncology). The course is suitable for students in all life science concentrations for those that need arefresher. All of these courses will of-course be discussing current events .Computer/Information/Engineering Sciences: For those in information technology, engineering, analyticsand UXD, there are a number of core and elective courses running. The Cybersecurity and Secure Systems(16:137:561) course covers fundamentals of cybersecurity and building secure systems. Cybersecurity isincreasingly important in today’s job market and the growth rate is growing as we become more digital.And for a general overview of employment in cybersecurity, please see our blog here. This course goes over everything you wantand need to know about the IT industry and where IT is used. It is also great for those in cybersecurity, asone of the skills that came up for Cyber (and for analytics) is the ability to design and analyze softwaresystems. Another skill covered in this class is Agile Development – (see here for a blog about productmanagement and Agile). Agile is a crucial skill for Product Managers as well.Every semester we run the popular Introductory Python programming Python Methodologies for DataScience (16:137:552). This course is taught by “Big Lars” and is appropriate for anyone in any concentrationwho needs to know python programming and scripting. (Big Lars wins the MBS award for the funniestvideos!) Database & Data Warehousing (16:137:538) covers the basics of database technology – perfectfor those in Analytics, UXD, IT and for those interested in learning about informatics. Most importantly, itcovers the #1 programming skill for almost all science/tech jobs – SQL.Want to pass those interview questions for top technology/analytics jobs? You need to take this advancedpython course: Data Structures & Algorithmic Problem Solving in Python (56:198:501)– this is a Camden CScourse which really targets the data structures needed for analytics and data science, and most importantly,uses Python. Data structures is super important to know and is used as the basis for most of the jobinterview questions for many big tech firms.Fundamentals of Analytics (16:137:550) is scheduled as is (16:137:602) Applied Regression Analysis thissemester – this is an MBS regression class (online, although now everything is online!) that uses SAS and Rto teach regression. 16:137:562 Applied Artificial Intelligence from Concept to Market is also being offeredthis semester. It will be utilizing Google TensorFlow. This is a hands-on class where is sure to be an excitingand extremely relevant class! NOTE: For those not in analytics but want to learn AI– you can take this class.This is important for any science & engineering students - *****“AI is changing the world” – everyoneneeds to learn why!****Business Intelligence with Visual Analytics (16:137:553) – this course teaches about BI and visualization. Ituses Tableau, a very popular visualization tool, increasingly also listed as a skill in many job postings. It is amust for those in analytics and engineering management, but a great elective for those in all otherconcentrations. Contextual Inquiry (16:137:532, a course in UXD sequence) is running this semester - thisis a required course for those in UXD and an elective for those interested in learning more about UXD.Please note: The very popular User Experience Design (16:137:531, required for IT and UXD and one of ourmost popular courses) is also scheduled. UXD covers how to think about developing a web site/ webpresence/ computer application from the user s perspective. If you are thinking about developing abusiness that involves the web – whether it is in cosmetics or biomedical devices, this course could help.This is also a key course for anyone thinking about product management or product design.Some other courses of interests: (***see the previous page sidebar about special permission numbers)Public Health Infrastructure and National Security (16:790:583) – This class is part of the MA in UnitedNations Studies from the political science department. They have some great courses about the politics ofdifferent science issues (cyber, food, water) etc. You can read the course description here. The course covers the power grid in the US - a very popular course with engineersand sustainability students.Summer Courses to come:àFundamentals of Intellectual Property – a great course covering the evaluation and valuations ofpatents. This course includes a trip to the USPTO in VA. In addition to IP, students gain an appreciation oftechnology transfer and business strategy. There will be an online version as well.àLinux Administration – if you want a job in cybersecurity, Linux is the #1 skill - A great course for anyonein technology.à Food and Cosmetic regulatory will be offered in the summer (as well as the fall).àPersonal Care Lab – Lab class for those in personal care science. Lab kits will be sent.
