Anesthesiologists:Angel Martino-Horrall, M.D. – Regional Medical Director of Obstetric Anesthesia.Dr. Angel Martino-Horrall has dedicated her career to the care of obstetricanesthesia patients. She served as Medical Director and Vice Chair of her previousdepartment where she led her team to earn the Society of Obstetric Anesthesia &Perinatology Center of Excellence Award. Dr. Martino-Horrall completed herresidency at the University of Michigan and currently sits on the ASPIRE NationalOB Subcommittee. She and her husband are Michigan natives and reside in themetro Detroit area with their four beautiful children – all of whom were deliveredat Beaumont Health!Daniel Zeldes, M.D. – Medical Director, Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe. Dr.Daniel Zeldes was born and raised in metro Detroit. He received a BS from theUniversity of Michigan and his MD from Wayne State University. Following thecompletion of his anesthesia residency at Oregon Health & Science University, hereturned to Michigan, to Grosse Pointe, his wife’s hometown, where they areraising their four children. Dr. Zeldes has practiced at Beaumont Hospital, GrossePointe since 2016 and became Chief of Anesthesia in 2020.Roy Soto, M.D. – Program Director, Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. Dr. Roy Soto isthe Director of Education and Director of Beaumont Health’s AnesthesiologyResidency Program. He is also Professor of Anesthesiology at the OaklandUniversity William Beaumont School of Medicine. Prior to coming to Beaumontand southeast Michigan, Dr. Soto completed his medical training at the UniformedServices University in Bethesda, MD, and then served as a Flight Surgeon andgeneral practitioner with the Air Force. Following his military commitment, Dr.Soto completed anesthesiology training at UCLA. Dr. Soto is President of theMichigan Society of Anesthesiologists. He has served as Treasurer for theAmerican Society of Enhanced Recovery (ASER) and has been actively involvedwith the Michigan Health and Hospital Association, the Michigan Surgical QualityCollaborative, and national projects with the National Surgical QualityImprovement Program (NSQIP) program of the American College of Surgeons. Hewas named to the Michigan Governor’s Prescription Drug andOpioid AbuseCommission in 2017.Dietmar Schlecht, D.O. – Medical Director, Beaumont Hospital, Troy. Dr. DietmarSchlecht brings 20 years of experience to leading the Anesthesiology departmentat Beaumont Hospital, Troy. Prior to joining Beaumont, he trained and worked inEmergency Medicine before completing his anesthesia residency at the Universityof Michigan, serving as Chief Resident from 1995-1996 before joining Henry Fordas an Attending Anesthesiologist in 1996. Dr. Schlecht joined Beaumont Health in1999 and transitioned to Chief of the Department of Anesthesiology andPerioperative Medicine at Beaumont Hospital, Troy in 2010, a role in which he stillserves today.1

Kaveh Aslani, M.D. – Regional Medical Director, Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak.Dr. Kaveh Aslani graduated and completed his anesthesia residency from theUniversity of Michigan and then completed a pediatric fellowship in 2006. Hejoined Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak after training and has spent his career there,leading and participating in many initiatives and committees over the years, aswell as training anesthesia residents as an Assistant Professor for OaklandUniversity William Beaumont School of Medicine. Dr. Aslani now serves as theRegional Medical Director of Anesthesia, overseeing anesthesia operations acrossthe Beaumont hospitals in Grosse Pointe, Royal Oak and Troy.Maria Forrest, M.D. – Regional Director of Pediatric Anesthesia. Dr. Maria Forestis a board-certified pediatric anesthesiologist who completed her training atHarvard University’s Boston Children’s Hospital. Employed at Beaumont Hospital,Royal Oak since 2015, Dr. Forrest has earned multiple distinguished awardsincluding the Research Scholar in Public Policy Award from the American Societyof Anesthesiologists in 2012. As a mother of three daughters, Dr. Forrest is fullyintegrated to the local community.Peter Panagopoulos, M.D. – Regional Medical Director, Beaumont Hospital,Dearborn. Dr. Panagopoulos serves as the Regional Medical Director ofAnesthesia, overseeing anesthesia operations across the Beaumont hospitals inDearborn, Taylor, Trenton and Wayne. He has practiced at Beaumont Hospital,Dearborn since 2012 and held multiple leadership roles since that time, such asChair of Anesthesiology and Chief of Trauma Anesthesiology. Dr. Panagopoulosgrew up in Michigan and completed his anesthesia residency at Wayne StateUniversity. He is involved in many committees at Beaumont Hospital, Dearborn,including those for Quality and Safety, Surgical Services, and the Operating Room.Jonathan Kaper, M.D. – Medical Director, Beaumont Hospital, Trenton. Dr. Kaperhas more than 12 years of experience, completing his anesthesia residency at BethIsrael Deaconess Medical Center through Harvard University. After training, Dr.Kaper returned to Detroit and led anesthesia departments at several areahospitals, earning acknowledgments for Excellence in Outpatient Surgery,Physician of the Year, and leading OR efficiency, safety, and quality improvementsat each facility. Dr. Kaper joined Beaumont in 2015 and serves as Medical Directorof Anesthesia for NorthStar as well as Senior Vice President, Chief Medical Officer,and Patient Safety Officer at Beaumont Hospital, Trenton.Larry Manders, M.D. – Director of Pain & Perioperative Services, BeaumontHospital, Taylor. Dr. Manders was born and raised in Taylor, Michigan and is proudto be both a lifelong patient and a physician at Beaumont. Dr. Manders completedhis anesthesia residency at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak and was awarded ChiefResident his final year as well as multiple awards including the American Society ofAnesthesiologists Emerging Leader, Foundation for Anesthesia Education andResearch (FAER) Resident Scholar, and delegate scholarships. After residency, hesuccessfully completed a pain medicine fellowship at the University of Wisconsin.He has served on national committees for both pain management and youngphysicians, as well as enhanced his field with multiple research publications andbook chapters.2

Ksenia Koltun, M.D. - Assistant Medical Director. Dr. Koltun has happily returnedto Michigan and the Beaumont family and serves as the Assistant Medical Directorat Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. She was Chief Resident during her final year atBeaumont Hospital in 2015 before becoming partner and serving on the ExecutiveCommittee for a private practice group in Oklahoma City. Dr. Koltun is passionateabout regional anesthesia and perioperative medicine and has also taken on therole of Medical Director of the B-Ready Surgical Optimization Clinic at Beaumont.Leigh Apple, D.O. – Assistant Medical Director. Dr. Apple serves as NorthStar’sVice Medical Director and the Clinical Operations and Trauma Liaison at BeaumontHospital, Dearborn. She has practiced at Beaumont Hospital, Dearborn since 2012,joining after completing her anesthesia residency at Michigan State University.Marina Dyment, M.D. – Medical Director, Beaumont Hospital, Wayne. Dr.Dyment has practiced anesthesia for more than 20 years and worked as anInfectious Disease physician in her home country of Baku, Azerbaijan, prior tocompleting her anesthesia residency at Henry Ford. She has worked forBeaumont Health since 2010 and served as Director of the Department ofAnesthesia for Midwest Ambulatory Surgical Center from 2011-2016 and hasserved as Medical Director at Beaumont Hospital, Wayne since 2016.Michael McCue, M.D. – Interim Chair, Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. Dr. McCuetrained at Massachusetts General Hospital through Harvard Medical School andthen completed dual fellowships in critical care and cardiac anesthesia at thoseinstitutions. After training, he returned home to Michigan and has worked forBeaumont Health for more than 35 years. Throughout his distinguished career,Dr. McCue has served in many leadership roles, committees and boards,committed to ensuring quality across the health system. He now serves as InterimChief, Department of Anesthesiology at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak and InterimChair, Department of Anesthesiology for Oakland University William BeaumontSchool of Medicine.Moumen Asbahi, M.D. – Medical Director, Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. Dr.Asbahi has worked at Beaumont Health since 2014, providing care both in theoperating rooms as well as the surgical critical care units. He was raised in theDetroit area and was awarded Teacher of the Year in 2015 for anesthesiologyresidency. He completed his residency at Ohio State University where he served asResidency Director and completed his fellowship at University of Michigan incritical care. In addition to serving as the Medical Director at Beaumont Hospital,Royal Oak, he is the ICU Director for Beaumont Health.Shafeena Nurani, M.D. – Director of Quality, Beaumont Health. Dr. ShafeenaNurani graduated from University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor,Michigan. She completed her residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital with theUniversity of Miami before returning to Beaumont Health in 2010 as ananesthesiologist. Since 2010, she has been an Assistant Professor ofAnesthesiology at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine andin 2018 she became the Director of Pre-Anesthesia Screening and (EnhancedRecovery After Surgery) ERAS programs atBeaumont Health.3

Alison Premo, M.D. – Assistant Medical Director, Beaumont Hospital, Dearborn.Dr. Premo completed medical school at Wayne State University before graduatingand completing her anesthesia residency and obstetric anesthesiology fellowshipat the University of Illinois in Chicago. She was Chief resident and earnedOutstanding Medical Student Teacher in 2009. Dr. Premo began her career inChicago before returning to Detroit and joining Beaumont Hospital, Dearborn in2012. She now serves as Vice Medical Director of Anesthesia and Director ofObstetric Anesthesiology.Wei Lau, M.D. – Director of Cardiac Anesthesia, Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oakand Troy. Dr. Lau completed his anesthesia residency at the University ofMichigan, Ann Arbor in 1992 before going on to specialize with a fellowship incardiovascular thoracic anesthesia. Dr. Lau has worked and led cardiac anesthesiadepartments throughout Beaumont and the University of Michigan for his entirecareer, as well as training new anesthesiologists as a Professor through theUniversity of Michigan and Oakland University William Beaumont School ofMedicine. Dr. Lau leads our Cardiac Anesthesia program across BeaumontHospital, Royal Oak and Troy.Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs):Howie Drews – Chief, Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. Howie received his BSNfrom Wayne State University in 2007 and completed his MSN in NurseAnesthesia from the Oakland University Beaumont Graduate Program of NurseAnesthesia in 2010, where he was an Agatha Hodgins award recipient. He hasserved on the Board of Directors and as the President of the MichiganAssociation of Nurse Anesthetists, and in 2021, he was elected by his peers toserve as Treasurer of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.Kirk Sledzinski – Chief, Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe. A graduate of HenryFord Hospital School of Nursing, Kirk worked there for 15 years after hisgraduation. He received his MS in Nurse Anesthesia from the University ofDetroit School of Nurse Anesthesia in 1992 and remained at Henry Ford until2000. In 2000, he began working at Bon Secour Hospital as a CRNA which wasacquired by Beaumont in 2007. He became the Chief CRNA at BeaumontHospital, Grosse Pointe in 2014. As a Michigan State graduate, he maintains hisschool spirit Go Green!Michele Burke – Chief, Beaumont Hospital, Dearborn. A native of Detroit,Michele Burke has worked at Beaumont Hospital, Dearborn since 1988, first asa nurse assistant, then RN in ICUs for 8 years, and as a CRNA since 1998. Shebecame Chief CRNA in 2004 and specializes in cardiac, OB, bariatrics andpediatrics. Michele attended Wayne State University, receiving herundergraduate degree in nursing and received her master’s degree from theUniversity of Detroit at Henry Ford.4

Mark Auger – Chief, Beaumont Hospital, Trenton. A native of the downriverarea his entire live, Mark graduated from Wayne State University in 2002 andserved as a US Army CRNA from 2001 to 2011. His deployments were to BrookeArmy Medical Center in Texas, West Point, New York at Army CommunityHospital and Tikrit, Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom. Mark has worked as aCRNA for Beaumont since 2002 and serves as Chief CRNA at BeaumontHospital, Trenton.Kevin Senko – Regional CRNA Director, Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe,Royal Oak and Troy. A southeast Michigan native, Kevin is a graduate of theUniversity of Detroit Mercy Nurse Anesthesia program and is an AgathaHodgins award recipient. Kevin has more than a decade of experiencepracticing and leading anesthesia teams in Detroit communities. Kevin nowserves as the Regional CRNA Director, overseeing CRNA operations across theBeaumont Hospitals in Grosse Pointe, Royal Oak and Troy.Raymond Johnson – Chief, Beaumont Hospital, Wayne. Ray has practiced as aCRNA for more than 3 decades, with most of his career at Beaumont Hospital,Wayne. In addition to leading the CRNA team at Beaumont Hospital, Wayne, hehas also served the hospital for many years in the role of OR Manager forSurgical Services, contributing to and leading several programs and qualityinitiatives as well as the start-up of a new wing of the hospital.Lori Shannon – Assistant Chief, Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. Lori has herDoctorate of Nurse Anesthesia Practice from the University of Michigan andhas practiced for 26 years as a CRNA. Lori previously served in the role ofEducation Coordinator for Beaumont Health and has organized manycommittees, heart team events, and educational updates. Lori is a seniormember of the Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak cardiac team.Heather Wahl – Assistant Chief, Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. Heather grewup in Monroe, MI and has worked at Beaumont since 2007. Heather’sBeaumont career began as a tech and then an ICU nurse before earning herNurse Anesthesia degree. She particularly enjoys providing care for OB andPediatrics. Heather has been on the CRNA leadership team since 2018 and isinvolved with many different committees, including OB Patient Innovation,Continuous Quality Improvement and CRNA Practice.John Mattarella - Chief, Beaumont Hospital, Troy. John graduated from theHurley Medical Center School of Anesthesia at the University of Michigan –Flint in 1985 and began his career as a CRNA at Saint John Health in Detroit.Shortly thereafter, John joined the team at Beaumont Hospital, Troy. His 32year tenure has allowed him to serve in many leadership positions includingChair of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations(JCAHO) Steering Committee, Pain Management Council and the FamiliesAgainst Narcotics Steering Committee. In July 2018, John received the“CaringConnects Award” for his exemplary work delivering compassionate,extraordinary care to his patients. In 2019, John was awarded the“Distinguished Service Award” for Advanced Practice Providers from theMedical Staff at Beaumont Hospital, Troy. Outside of work, John volunteers as5

a medical provider at Hope City Church and is active in Families AgainstNarcotics as a Naloxone trainer and public speaker on addiction.Michelle Murphy – Chief, Beaumont Hospital, Taylor. Michelle graduated fromthe University of Detroit Mercy with her Master of Science in 1998. She joinedBeaumont Health immediately after and has practiced across the BeaumontHospitals in Dearborn, Wayne, and Taylor for more than 20 years, working innearly all specialties. Michelle serves as the Chief CRNA at Beaumont Hospital,Taylor.Jeff Sinkovich – Regional CRNA Director for the Beaumont Hospitals inDearborn, Taylor, Trenton and Wayne. Jeff completed his CRNA training at theUniversity of Pittsburgh. He has practiced for more than 30 years in metroDetroit, leading teams in multiple health systems as well as in Toledo, OH andseveral southeastern and mid-Michigan surgery centers and rural hospitals. Jeffhas also served as the District 2 Director for the Michigan Association of NurseAnesthetists.
