WINTER MEDICAL & HEALTH SPECIALTIESPROGRAM NEWSLETTERFRESHMEN CONTRIBUTE:THE ANNUAL MEDICALCAREER ISSUEWinter, 2015-2016Each year, program freshmen are tasked with researching professions in themedical and health fields. A range of occupations are reported including theeducation required, specific job tasks, occupational out look and of course, salary. This issue of the MHSP newsletter showcases a sampling from thisyear’s submissions. Topics include descriptions of We hope you enjoy these andlearn something!Inside this issue:SO YOU WANT TO BE A PAIN MEDICINEPHYSICIAN? . by Jack PhillipsI am interested in becoming a pain medicine physician. Pain can comefrom many things such as cancer, arthritis, injuries, or just back pain. A reportfrom the Institute of Medicine stated that almost 100 million Americans sufferfrom chronic pain, which is more than heart disease, cancer and diabetescombined! This means there is a high demand for people specializing in treatingpain. There is going to be almost a 21% increase in employment ofanesthesiologists by 2024 and hospitals in Hampton Roads are looking to addpain management doctors and anesthesiologists to their team. Training requiresthat you choose one of two career paths: anesthesiology or physical medicineand rehabilitation. Both of these will get you a pain medicine fellowship oncecompleted. The total years of training required would be about 5-6 years. 4 ofthose years would be specializing in one of the areas and then 1-2 years ofsub-specializing in Pain Management. Salary range for a medicine physiciancan range anywhere from 273,000 to 398,000 a year. This makes the averagesalary around 340,000 a year, but these numbers are more associated with painmanagement doctors who do not practice anesthesiology. Doctors who practiceanesthesiology and pain medicine have an average income of 502,000annually! Of course doctors just starting out in this field make a bit less; around 315,000. On the other hand, experienced doctors of this practice can make upto a whopping 600,000! I am interested in this occupation because I understandwhat having constant pain feels like because I play many sports andhave patellar tendinitis (inflamed tendons in my knee due to overuse). I want toknow more about pain treatment, I am comfortable with doing procedures, Iwould be interested in practicing integrative medicine, and I feel like this is asubject that I would be happy with. I feel like I would not get bored or feelunhappy because there is so many different problems related to pain so everypatient would be a new adventure. My ideal job would be helping people in painand being able to do different things each day. I feel this job would be excitingand keep me on my toes.PAIN OSURGEON2FORENSICSCIENTIST3WHAT’S A PRE-MEDMAJOR?3ALL A’SFALL 16-174ALL A’S5PCP6PA6WHITE SHIRTCEREMONY7WHAT’S GOING ON & 8PROGRAMEXPECTATIONSBy JACK PHILLIPS

So you want to be a BIOMEDICAL ENGINEER?.By Leah RichelsThere are many different jobs and professions that are medical or health focused. When some professions arecombined they create the category of a Biomedical Engineer. A Biomedical engineer is someone who takes thebasic engineering principles like technical/mechanical drawing and applies it to a more medical aspect. Anexample of such an application is building and programming a prosthetic limb. My interest in the medicalworld is Biomedical Engineering. As a biomedical engineer I will be able to combine biomedicine withengineering and science in order to create useful and life changing tools. In order to become a biomedical engineer, I will need at the least a Bachelor’s degree but I plan ongetting a PhD. In order to do that I will need an additional 3 years to the original 4. In order to get a BiomedB.S, I need a degree from an accredited program in either Biomedical or Bioengineering. However, somepeople get a Bachelor’s in another kind of engineering and pursue a graduate degree in biomedical engineering. One of the reasons I want to be a biomedical engineer is because I love math, and design, as well as theidea of being able to build complex things. Additionally, I feel if I was able to sit down somewhere and drawand build the first solution to a biomedical problem that comes to mind, I would have the coolest job ever.Another added bonus is the salary which ranges from the lowest I found of 52,680 a year to the highest at 139,350 a year. According to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMES), as of 2015 people working in bioengineering careers make an average salaryof 91,230. Biomedical Engineering is also a rapidly growing field with a projected 23%growth. Locally, there is a job in Norfolk that is called Clinical Systems Engineer. This ispretty cool because I can be near my Mom, because chances are I wouldn’t take a job thatmakes me far away from her.A pediatric neurologist diagnoses and treats acute and chronic diseases and conditions of the nervous system ininfants, children, and teens. Some of the many conditions they treat are birth defects, epilepsy and seizures, brain and spinal tumors, and severe headaches. If a child is having any problems involving the nervous system, apediatric neurologist has special training with experience to treat your child. To be a pediatric neurologist, youmust have 4 years of college earning a bachelor’s degree with a relevant field degree in something like biologyor physics, then you must attend medical school for a total of 4 years to earn a Doctor of medicine degree. Afterthat, you complete 1 year of an internship for pediatrics that will give you experience. Finally you need 3 yearsof residency. In total that is 12 years of education that you must get after high school in order to go through withthis profession. In addition most child neurologist has certification from the American Board of Pediatrics andthe American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. In Virginia, there are a total of 20 offices that specialize inpediatric neurology, but there are some offices that do help treat the same things that pediatric neurologist treat. You can usually find them in children’s hospitals, university medical centers, and like previously stated privateoffices and clinics. There probably aren’t many of them due to the fact that it takes so long to get everything youneed to work in this medical field. But, that number is soon to increase according to a study. A Neurologist has avery good pay. They usually make between 213,000 and 246,000 a year. That’s more than a pharmacist: theyusually make 121,920 a year. Pediatric neurologists usually work together with pediatricians and other primarycare doctors. They even work with other pediatric specialist if the child’s issues are more serious and complex. Ichose this profession because it combines my two favorite things: children and the brain nerves. The brain wasalways something I was interested in and wanted to work with because of the way it works. And for the children, I just love and adore them. So, in conclusion, pediatric associates aremy hope and dream not only for the good pay, but for the love that I have in the job.So you want to be a PEDIATRIC NEUROLOGIST?.byAnayiah Easter

SO, YOU WANT TO BE A FORENSIC SCIENTIST?.By Joy FordI have been interested in becoming a forensic scientist, whose occupation is to conductanalyses and tests to give results for legal proceedings. They find evidence and explain therelevancy of evidence for both criminal and civil cases to find a verdict of the case. They alsowrite laboratory reports and may testify in court as an expert witness. For this occupation, some majors to be studied are chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory science. Somecolleges well with forensic science are The University of Sciences, Boston University Schoolof Medicine, Eastern Virginia Medical School, and Virginia Commonwealth University. Thejob outlook is projected to grow twenty-seven percent from 2014 to 2024. Competition wouldbe stronger because of substantial interest in forensic science. Future jobs in Hampton Roadsare in the Eastern Laboratory in Downtown, Norfolk as a forensic scientist. There are otherlabs in Roanoke, Richmond, and Manassas. The pay is pretty good with the median salarybeing 51,000 dollars. The least salary was 35,000 dollars and the maximum salary was 86,000dollars. I’m interested in this job occupation because the anatomy of the human body is amarvelous thing and I would have the experience to be a part of two parts in the communitywhile working with both in the laboratory and in the courtroom. I enjoy biology and I feelexcited about learning about chemistry and anatomy. I hope to learn about a variety of subjects that will give me a better understanding of the human body. If I had thisjob, I would be confident in knowing I have superb writing, speaking, andobservation skills. I want to be able to explore my mind to use evidence anddetermine the cause of events and the validity of them. I want this jobbecause I want to help my community to the best of my ability in the waythat I love.**There is no such thing as a Pre-Med major**Contrary to common belief, there is not such thing as a “pre-med” major in college.Instead, medical schools look for a specific “track” or common courses from applicants.Four classes make up this track.they are: Biology; Chemistry; Organic Chemistry andPhysics. You can be a music major or an art major or a business major; as long as you takethese four classes, you would be eligible to apply to medical school after college. Of course, doing well in these classes is also necessary. Not only is medical school costly (upwardsof 300,000 ) and takes a long time (like 12 more years of study after college) but itis highly selective and competitive. In addition to doing well in your collegecourse work, you must take the MCAT’s (sort of like an SAT, onlyharder) and be well-rounded. You didn’t really think once you finishedhigh school your education would end, did you? Education is a continuous,life-long process. One of the reasons we talk about other professions in theNEWSmedical and health fields is to help foster that awareness; you don’tFLASHnecessarily need to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to achieve thegoal of a medically related career, but you do need to have goals and work hardto achieve those goals.COURSES TOTAKE INCOLLEGE INPREPARATIONFOR MEDICALSCHOOL BIOLOGY CHEMISTRY ORGANICCHEMISTRY PHYSICSPage 3

SO, YOU WANT TO BECOME A PCP?.by Kobe NguyenA medical profession that I am interested in is a Primary Care Physician. A Primary Care Physician is aphysician who will be the first to meet with a person with a not yet diagnosed concern. They also givecontinued care for many medical conditions regardless of the cause, diagnosis, or organ system. This alsoincludes routine check-ups. Like many medical professions the educational requirements are a doctoral orprofessional degree. Four years of medical school which is a tertiary level educational institution whichawards a professional degree for physicians and surgeons is also required. Finally you need three to sevenyears of residency training which is where one practices medicine under the direct or indirect supervision ofan attending physician. A Primary Care Physician is also the most common type of Physician and 77.6% ofmedical group administrators plan to hire more within the next twelve months. Despite it being so common, itis still a profession in high demand. The Association of American Medical Colleges predict that there will be90,000 too few physicians by 2020. That's about half of the current number of Primary Care Physiciansworking in the United States. Currently, this occupation has a salary range of 140,000 196,000 annually, giving it a smaller pay than most other physicians. However, the reasonwhy I am interested in this job is mainly because I want to help everyday people stay safeand healthy and being a patients first contact when a medical condition comes up seemslike a great way to do it. Aside from that, although on the lower paying end of physicians,it still offers a nice pay which can easily support my living. I think that being a PrimaryCare Physician will go a long way and in many ways benefit me and others.SO, YOU WANT TO BECOME A PA?.by Olivia NewEver since I was a little girl my mom always told me to “Chase my dreams”. So as I got older mydream of becoming a physician’s assistant became more of a reality when I got accepted into the MedicalHealth and Specialties Program at Maury. A physician’s assistant, or PA, is a person certified to providebasic medical services usually under the supervision of a licensed physician. To become a physician’s assistant you must have a bachelor’s degree, possibly in biology or anotherhealth related major. After graduating, you also must have to go through a 26 month physician’s assistantprogram. A great advantage is that we have EVMS right in our back yard which they have an excellent PAprogram you can attend. I understand that medical school is very time consuming and costly, so the PA program is a more suitable career choice for me. In order to become a physician’s assistant you must have somehealthcare-related work experience and you must pass the Physician Assistant National Certifyingexamination. Getting a job being a physician’s assistant is very desirable because they are always in highdemand. More than 53,280 individuals are employed as a PA but, studies say that from 2014 to 2024employment of physician’s assistant is supposed to increase 30%, much more than any other career. In 2015,the median wage of a physician’s assistant was 98,180, which is only approximately 95,000 less than aregular physician. On average, earnings of a PA are between 67,030 and 130,620.Being a part of the health care career has always been a dream of mine ever since Istarted playing pretend doctor on my stuffed animals. I’ve always had an interest in helpingothers and so becoming a physician’s assistant in a private practice would make my dreamscome true. I’m motivated to stay on the right path toward this career and will hopefully becalled Olivia New, PA.

In an all program assembly, students learned about theorigins of the medical student White Coat ceremony and how we came about to adapt this intoa Maury MHSP tradition. Seniors then recited for the first time the MHSP Student Oath, again, modeled after the Hippocratic Oath medical students recite at their ceremony. This year,CELINE MILLER was recognized as the 2016-2017 Spirit of the Oath recipient, selected bythe program teachers as the student who best exemplified the student oath. Select seniors withmore than 150 hours of community service to date were then acknowledged for “Above andBeyond” awards. The keynote was delivered by former students and Spirit of the Oathrecipients for the 2015-2016 school year: Zachary Green VCU, 2020 and Nick Stoll, VT, 2020.The generosity of program parents and the MHSP PAC provided reception for seniors andtheir family and guests immediately afterwards.Page 7
