Psy.D. Programs2OverviewThis Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) Program Guide is a quick reference for both prospective Psy.D. students andtheir professors or academic advisors. All Psy.D. programs are listed by location, administration, specialization, subspecializations available, American Psychological Association accreditation status, program length, anddissertation/research project requirement.

Psy.D. Programs3Outline of ContentsDoctor of Psychology Programs Today – 2007 Edition: Location, Accreditation, Administration, SpecializationThe Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree has been in existence in the United States since the late 1960s.The essential difference between Ph.D. and Psy.D. degrees is product. Ph.D. education traditionally emphasizesbasic research and the production of original knowledge, in keeping with a scientist/academician model. On theother hand, Psy.D. education centers on the development of competencies of practice, reflecting apractitioner/professional model. The American Psychological Association (APA) accredits doctoral programs in psychology. Programslisted as accredited have been judged by the APA to have met the criteria for accreditation. Accreditation is avoluntary process. The accreditation status listed for each program in this resource reflects the program’s currentstatus with regard to APA accreditation. It is noted that the APA only reviews and accredits programs that fall intothe following categories: Clinical, counseling, school, or combined professional-scientific psychology. As such, programs with foci outside of these parameters are ineligible to apply for or to receive accreditation.Argosy University, formerly American Schools of Professional Psychology (ASPP), is a national, freestanding (i.e., not university-related) proprietary, educational component of Argosy Corporation. Akin to anational franchise, Argosy University has campuses in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois,Minnesota, Virginia, and Washington, as shown in the tabular entries within this resource. Nine of the fifteenArgosy University Programs are APA accredited.Currently there are 117 psychology programs that offer the Psy.D. degree (Figure 1). Eighty of theprograms offer degrees in clinical, twelve in school, four in educational psychology, four in combined specialties(e.g., clinical and school psychology), four in counseling psychology, three in forensic psychology, two in maritaland family therapy, three in organizational psychology, two in business psychology, one in spiritual andpsychological health, one in psychoanalysis, and one in individual, organizational and community transformation(last three categories listed as ‘other’ in Figure 2). Fifty-six of the programs are university-affiliated and sixty-oneare freestanding (Figure 3). Of the 117 Psy.D. programs, 70 have received APA accreditation (Figure 4). Amongaccredited programs half have received accreditation since 1995 (Figure 5). The 47 non-APA accredited programsconsist of 11 university-affiliated programs and 36 freestanding professional school programs. Furthermore, of thoseprograms that are non-APA accredited, 17 are such that they are ineligible for APA accreditation. It should be noted

Psy.D. Programs4that while a few programs are no longer active, there has been an increase in numbers by 26 programs since the2004 review, representing more than a 22% increase. This compilation will assist individuals, such as undergraduate psychology students, who wish tocontemplate or seek an advanced degree. It also will be helpful to psychology faculty members who advise studentsabout graduate school prospects and offer career guidance. This guide will serve as a ready access reference forinquiries and questions about the Psy.D. model of professional education in psychology.
