TESOL Award for InternationalParticipation at TESOLNaeko Naganuma, currentlyat Akita International Universityin Japan, has interests focusedon making use of technology toenhance students’ learning.Her research interests liemainly in pragmatics. Recentlythe main focus of her researchhas been in the waysJapanese students canacquire appropriate linguisticabilities as well as interculturalskills.

TESOL Award for InternationalParticipation at TESOLLai Ping Florence Mabegan her Englishteaching career as asecondary teacher inHong Kong. Since 2001,she has also taughtinternational students andadult migrants inAustralia. Her researchinterests include theissues of nonnativespeaking Englishteachers, bilingualism,and the use of L1 in ESLclassrooms.

TESOL Award for InternationalParticipation at TESOLAudrei Gesser ofUniversidade Estadual doNorte do Paraná/UENPFaficop in Brazil is interestedin oral and sign languageteaching and learning issues,deaf and hearing teacher’straining, and discussionsrelated to complexsociolinguistic contexts ofbilingual/multilingual/multicultural minority groups. Herresearch focuses both onhearing people learningBrazilian Sign Language andon deaf people learningEnglish as a foreign language.

TESOL Award for InternationalParticipation at TESOLYuzo Kimura’s researchinterest explores secondlanguage teaching/learningmotivation in light ofsociocultural and activitytheory in a longitudinalmanner. He is also interestedin SLA in classroom contextsemploying a sociocognitiveapproach. His currentclassroom SLA researchinvestigates teaching practicesin China, South Korea, andJapan.

TESOL/TEFL Travel GrantMartina Mbayu Nana earneda Postgraduate Certificate ineducation, ESL/EFL (DIPES11), and her BA inEnglish/French from theUniversity of Yaounde,Cameroon. She is the coauthorof Sign-In and Tune-In, Englishcourse books for primaryschools published byCambridge University Press.Since 1986 she has beenteaching in primary throughsecondary schools in Frenchspeaking Cameroon.

TESOL Award for Teacher asClassroom Action ResearcherPamela Pearson is asecond-year PhD studentin applied linguistics andESL at Georgia StateUniversity. She holds anMA in TESL/appliedlinguistics (Iowa State)and an MAT (Drake).Pam has spent the past13 years teachingEFL/ESL to learners ofvarious ages in Japan,Mexico, Djibouti, and theUnited States.

TESOL Award for Excellence inTeachingRachel Grant is an associate professor ofmultilingual/multicultural education and Directorof the Center for Language and Culture atGeorge Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia,USA. Her research interests include applicationof critical pedagogies focusing on race andclass, sociocultural theories of languages andliteracies in schools, and literacy teachereducation in urban settings.

Mary Finocchiaro Award for Excellence inNonpublished Pedagogical MaterialsCathee Mang set up andteaches an AcademicSuccess Program for ESLstudents who want to goto college, high school, orvocational trainingprograms. A specialist indrama, she has written,directed, produced, andsometimes acted inentertaining, educationalvideos for ESL studentsin the United States andIndonesia.

Ruth Crymes TESOL Fellowship forGraduate StudyYouJin Kim is a PhDcandidate in appliedlinguistics at NorthernArizona University. Shehas taught EFL/ESL invarious contexts includingKorea, China, and theUSA for over 7 years. Herresearch interests includeinteraction and secondlanguage acquisition,task-based languageteaching, andpedagogical grammar.

TESOL Award for an OutstandingPaper on NNEST IssuesTomoyuki Kawashima isa full-time English teacherat a high school in Japan.He is currently pursuing adoctorate in appliedlinguistics at MacquarieUniversity in Australia bydistance mode. Hisresearch interests are thetesting of speaking skillsand pedagogicalapplications of WorldEnglishes in the ELTprograms.

TESOL Award for DistinguishedResearchAneta Pavlenko isprofessor of TESOL atTemple University whereshe teaches master’s anddoctoral courses in theTESOL program. Herresearch examines theinteraction betweenlanguage and thought,language and emotions,and language and identitythrough the lens of biand multilingualism andsecond languagelearning.

Virginia French Allen AwardRita Deyoe-Chiullan teachesat Dallas, Texas areauniversities as an adjunctfaculty member. Courses shehas taught in the last yearinclude: ESL Methods,Bilingual AcquisitionProcesses, Second LanguageAssessment, BilingualInstruction/Materials,Language and Culture,Foundations of BilingualEducation. Her researchinvolves improving the writingskills of teachers and bilingualcurriculum development.

D. Scott Enright TESOL InterestSection Service AwardKhadar Bashir-Ali is a facultymember at the Abu DhabiWomen’s College. She trainsArab female teachers to beteachers of EFL. She worked for17 years as a K–12 public schoolsas a FL/SL teacher in Columbus,Ohio. She was also a visitingassistant professor at the OhioState University, training inservice and pre-service languageteachers. Her research interestsinclude teacher training,sociolinguistics, language policies,urban education, immigrant andrefugee education, gender andsociocultural dynamics,assessment, and curriculumdevelopment.
