Viega played a role in designing and installing radiant coolingand heating in the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC). Viega ProRadiant Systems 7The ARTIC projectin Anaheim, CA,marked CaliforniaComfort System’sfirst radiant heatingand cooling installwith Viega systems.A LEED Platinum building, thestructure is 67,000 square feet withthree levels, connecting people toa variety of transit options as wellas entertainment, dining and retailshops, all in one location. ARTIC’sarchitecture includes a large numberof windows and a dome-shapedstructure, which results in high solargains but controlling the climateinside the building with a conventionalforced-air system would have beenpractically impossible.HVAC designers chose to implementa radiant heating and cooling systeminstead. Radiant cooling allows for theinstantaneous removal of heat throughabsorption. Installing ViegaPEX Barriertubing at tightly spaced increments(6" on-center) within two inches ofthe finished surface floor gives theengineer the ability to remove thesolar sensible gain instantaneously.For the ARTIC project, the coolingcapacity ranges up to 40 Btu/hr ft2.This provides an energy savings of34% over ASHRAE 90.1-2007.The ARTIC project marked CaliforniaComfort System’s first radiant heatingand cooling project with Viegasystems. They installed 44,000 feet ofin-slab heating and cooling pipe, 18manifolds and 12 pumps. It was alsothe first time they worked hand-in-hand with Viega for the design ofa project.“From start to finish, from inceptionof the design to the commissioning,Viega was there by our side,”said Paul Redgate, Pipe FittingSuperintendent for California ComfortSystems. “Viega’s involvement waspriceless — they didn’t just hand usthe package and walk away. With four people it wouldtake 10-to-12 days to install. This newway, all we did was roll it out and tackit down.”Vice-President Buddy Hill played ahands-on role at the garage.
