The education program leading to elementary certification is approved by the State of MaineDepartment of Education. The Physical Therapy educational program is accredited by the American Physical Therapy Association. The Occupational Therapyeducational program is accredited by the AmericanOccupational Therapy Association. Nursing programsare accredited by the National League of Nursing.Dental Hygiene programs are accredited by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation. The Social Work program is accredited by theCommission on Accreditation on the Council of SocialWork Education. The School of Nurse Anesthesia isaccredited by the Council on Accreditation of NurseAnesthesia Educational Programs, a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council on Post-secondaryAccreditation and the U.S. Department of Education.The Physician Assistant program is accredited by theCommission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. CAS also offers Master ofScience degree in Education and post-masters Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Educational Leadership. CAS offers programs of study at both the University Campus and Westbrook College Campus.College of Arts & Sciences MissionThe College of Arts and Sciences at the Universityof New England is a coeducational college committedto academic excellence. About two-thirds of recent graduates pursue careers in primary care. Graduates receivethe Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) degree.College of Osteopathic MedicineMission StatementThe mission of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine is to provide for the education of Osteopathic Physicians and other health professionals. The college is dedicated to the improvementof life through education, research, and service, emphasizing health, healing, and primary care for the peopleof New England and the nation.Office of Continuing EducationThe Office of Continuing Education arranges coursesand services for individuals seeking to meet their educational goals on a part-time basis. University coursesand programs are designed and offered in a variety offlexible formats to accommodate students seeking tobalance work, family, and other responsibilities.University CampusBiddeford, MaineThe University of New England was founded in 1978by the combination of the New England College of Osteopathic Medicine with St. Francis College. The University places emphasis on the quality of instruction, respect for the individual, and on the practical applicationof academic material.Visited by Champlain and the early North Atlantic explorers, today’s UNE campus was, successively, a seasonal campground of the Sokokis Indians of the AbenakiTribe, a settlers’ garrison, a farm, a convent, a seminary,and eventually a university community.On May 1, 1939, ground was broken on the banks of theSaco River, near Biddeford, Maine, to establish a newschool. This resulted primarily through the efforts of twoFransiscans (and brothers), Arthur and Zenon Decary. Thefollowing November saw the opening of St. Francis College. Its original intent was to be a six-year institution -8four years of high school and two of college. It began withjust fourteen students enrolled.Over the next two decades St. Francis College underwent a number of developments, eventually phasingout its high school programs. By 1966, the College hadtransformed into a fully accredited post-secondary institution. By 1967, women were admitted for the firsttime, and enrollment had reached 554.St. Francis College continued to struggle and growthrough many changes over the next dozen years. In1978, it joined with the New England Foundation forOsteopathic Medicine to become the University NewEngland. UNE has enjoyed a rich tradition of development and expansion ever since.The University’s 425 (plus) acre campus is set on thebanks of the Saco river and shore of the Atlantic Ocean.The city of Biddeford is situated between two resortareas, Kennebunkport and Old Orchard Beach, 20 milessouth of Portland and a close 90 miles north of Boston.The comfortable size and coastal location of the University of New England set it apart from most collegesand universities and help to create a special educationalatmosphere.The Harold Alfond Center for Health SciencesThe Harold Alfond Center for Health Sciences provides a significant focus for the University. Located atthe center of campus, this three story building housesnumerous laboratories and lecture halls, many used bythe College of Osteopathic Medicine. This Center bringsthe University to the national forefront of health and lifesciences education.Campus CenterThe Campus Center houses a 25-yard/6-lane handicapped accessible swimming pool; a ten-person hot tub;a fitness center that includes 15 weight machines, freeweights, exercise bikes, rowing machines, stair masters and Nordic tracks, two racquetball courts, and12,000 square feet of gymnasium space with a tenth ofa mile indoor track. The Campus Bookstore, Snack Barand Multipurpose Rooms are located in the CampusCenter as well. Outdoor facilities offer jogging and crosscountry trails, and an outdoor volleyball court. Aerobics and the Bodywise Center for Health and Fitnessprogram are available to students.

About The University of New EnglandDecary HallOther University Campus BuildingsDecary Hall houses the College of Arts and Sciences,and includes classrooms, labs, faculty and administrative offices, mailroom, and cafeteria.Opening in the fall of 2002 are two new residence hallbuildings which will house nearly 310 students. Five otherundergraduate residence halls, a security building, someportable classroom and office space, and the graduate housing park are also on the University Campus. TheUniversity’s admissions office is located across Highway 9 in its own building, and business office servicesis also housed in a separate building nearby. A new facilities building, located at the sound end of campus, isscheduled for completion during the 2002-03 academicyear. Also scheduled for completion by fall 2002 is asignificant extension of the food services dining hall, located on the ground floor of Decary Hall.Jack Ketchum LibraryBuilt in 1970, the three-story Ketchum Library is thecentral repository for books, magazines, journals, catalogsand other resource materials in support of the UniversityCampus programs. Media Services is also housed there.Marcil HallMarcil Hall is a three story building primarily for classroom and conference space. Faculty offices for several of the University's programs are also located within.Marcil was constructed in 1993.Marine Science CenterThe Marine Science Education and Research Centeris a state-of-the-art facility for undergraduate education and research.
