This exam is required bythe California Board of Registered Nursing and the boards ofnursing of other states and U.S. territories for licensure as aregistered nurse.Distinctive FeaturesThe Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program can be completedin four semesters after enrollment in the first nursing sciencecourse. In addition, students need at least three semestersto complete the prerequisites for admission to the program.The ADN program is approved by the California Board ofRegistered Nursing (BRN). The number of students who canenroll is limited by the availability of classroom space, qualifiedinstructors and clinical facilities.Completion of the Associate Degree in Nursing provides studentswith the opportunity to take the national licensure examinationto become a registered nurse. The Associate Degree in Nursingis also a stepping stone to an advanced degree in nursing. Therigorous curriculum consists of the knowledge and clinicalskills to practice professional nursing. Registered nurses haveone of the highest starting salaries in healthcare. Those with theAssociate Degree in Nursing have freedom to find employmentin virtually any location in a variety of rewarding environmentswhile making a difference in the lives of others. The prerequisites apply toall students, even those who have enrollment packets on file withthe Nursing Department office.1. Graduation from a United States high school or approvedequivalent.2. Freedom from communicable disease as verified by a licensedphysician or certified nurse practitioner. Health conditionsthat could impair the student’s ability to perform the essentialfunctions of a nursing student safely and competently or thatwould endanger a patient will be examined on a case-by-casebasis. Students should not have the physical examinationuntil given the program forms by the Nursing Departmentoffice, as requirements may change from year to year. Finalpermission to enroll in the nursing program will be dependenton the results of the physical examination.3. Background screening is required by the health care facilitiesin which students have clinical practice. If the backgroundscreen reveals a criminal background the student will notbe allowed to enroll in the nursing program. The health carefacilities reserve the right to decline any student who has acriminal background. As there are only one mental healthunit and one pediatric unit in the Antelope Valley, a studentwho does not meet the background screening requirementscannot enroll in the associate degree nursing program.4. No more than one repeated science course of the threerequired.Enrollment Procedures For Generic ApplicantsAll items in the enrollment process must be submitted together. Obtain the enrollment forms for the ADN program from theNursing Department office. Submit one set of official high school transcripts (or GEDresults) and all college transcripts to the Nursing Departmentoffice with the enrollment form. College transcripts mustreflect all grades completed at the time the packet is submittedto the Nursing Department. Transcripts, AP scores and GEDresults must be received in sealed, unopened envelopes.Another set of transcripts should be sent to the transcriptoffice. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the highschool and college(s) attended for official transcripts. Thestudent should contact educational institutions early in theenrollment process.NOTE: All transcripts of college work must be submitted.Failure to submit all transcripts will disqualify the student fromenrollment in the program and may be reported to the Board ofRegistered Nursing as fraudulent activity.NOTE FOR STUDENTS WITH FOREIGN TRANSCRIPTS:Foreign transcripts of high school and college work must beevaluated for equivalency to United States education by anaccredited credentials evaluation service. Subject and gradelisting are required for college course work. Course descriptionsare required for all courses used to fulfill program prerequisitesor required courses. The high school evaluation must statethat the student has the equivalent of 12th grade high schoolgraduation in the United States. A list of approved credentialevaluation services is available from the Office of Admissionsand Records or the Nursing Department office. Submit a current Educational Planning and Evaluation Formthat has been complete by an AVC counselor within the lastsix months. The counselor will evaluate progress towardgraduation requirements and courses from other collegesfor equivalency to AVC courses. Contact the CounselingDepartment for an appointment. Transfer students must submit a letter from their previousnursing program director indicating that they are eligible toreturn to their former program in good standing. LVNs applying for advanced placement need to submit acopy of their California vocational nursing license, proof ofIV certification, and vocational nursing transcripts showingcompletion of an obstetrical and pediatrics nursing course.LVNs must maintain continuous licensure while enrolled inthe program. Students transferring science courses should consult with acounselor or the dean. Not all science courses are equivalentto those at AVC.Submission of an enrollment packet does not guaranteeenrollment in the program. Incomplete enrollment packets willnot be considered.Selection Procedures for Generic Applicants1. Enrollment packets are accepted year-round. However,students who wish to enter in fall must file completeenrollment packets and successful ATI TEAS results by

Submission of an enrollment packet by the deadlinedoes not guarantee admission for the next semester.2. The student is responsible for informing the NursingDepartment office of any change of address, telephonenumber, name and/or email contact information.3. After prerequisites are verified, students will be given anappointment to take the Test of Essential Academic Skills(TEAS ), a nursing diagnostic assessment test. If a studentfailed the TEAS twice while applying to the LVN-RNprogram, the student will not be allowed to take the TEAS to enter the generic ADN program. The test is free. Studentswho attain a satisfactory score on the test (currently 62% orhigher) will be considered for the next step in the enrollmentprocess. Students who do not attain a satisfactory score onthe test will have one year (365 days) from the date of thetest to complete additional coursework. Upon successfulcompletion of the coursework, students will be givenpermission to take the TEAS a second and final time.Students who attain a satisfactory score on the second testwill be considered for the next step of the selection process.Registered Nursing 339social security number verification. 340 Registered Nursing2020-2021 AVC College CatalogDegree Total 74Transfer StudentsStudents transferring from other colleges must meet the sameprerequisites and follow the enrollment procedure for genericstudents.Transfer students must submit a letter from their previousnursing program director indicating that they are eligible toreturn to their former program in good standing.Eligible transfer students must take the TEAS assessment andcomplete NS 200A, Nursing Transition.A student may be granted credit for nursing courses taken atother colleges if the courses are comparable to AVC’s ADNcourses in content, hours, and units. Course syllabi must beprovided with the enrollment packet to enable the faculty toevaluate the course work for equivalency.The student must petition the faculty for transfer credit ofnursing courses. (Please refer to Transfer and Challenge Policyand Procedures).Challenge examinations are available for all nursing sciencecourses.Transfer students must meet with a counselor prior to submittingan enrollment packet for the ADN program to determineequivalency of science and general education courses from othercolleges.LVN to RN Career OptionsVocational Nurses who are licensed in California may beeligible for admission to the ADN program. IV certification andAmerican Heart Associate CPR for health care providers arerequired for entrance into the program.LVNs must maintain continuous licensure as an LVN inCalifornia while enrolled in the nursing program and through tothe date of licensure as a registered nurse.After admission to the program, the following options areavailable to the LVN:A. The 30 unit option as specified by the Board of RegisteredNursing (non-degree*).B. Advanced Placement: entrance into the program beyond thefirst semester (degree or non-degree*).C. Entrance into the generic ADN program (degree or nondegree*).*Individuals completing nursing requirements but notcompleting degree requirements of the college.A. 30 Unit Option: The Nursing Practice Act requires objectivecounseling and individual evaluation of each LVN who wantsto enroll in a registered nursing program. Additional educationrequired for the 30 unit option should not exceed 30 semesterunits.
