Aloha! Welcome to the Beaverton Ukulele Club’s Ukulele Jam/Song Circle! Please turn off your cell phone /other electronic devices. There is a water fountain go thru the inside doors tothe hallway, turn left, it’s on left side. Bathrooms are in the same hallway, across from the water fountain.Formal instruction is not part of our jam/song circle we just make music ! Our jams are just that jam sessionsfor those who can already play a few chords. You can do this on your own, without lessons, in a short time. (lotsof internet resources available) But you don't have to be an expert player to take part in our jam sessions andhave fun . Beginners are very welcome. We do informally share techniques, so you will, hopefully, learn a thingor two. We also welcome singers ! (as it's not easy to play & sing at the same time : ) Experienced players areinvited to stay for an "advanced" jam session starting at 11:00 am.We start by having someone tell us their name and picking a song from the songbook. The person who picksthe song generally leads the song. You can also pick a song and ask if someone else is willing to lead it. OR you can pass and let the next person pick. The leader will tell us the song number and then share theirthoughts about the time signature/rhythm/tempo singing key suggested strum pattern (tell & show). Be sure togive everyone a few minutes to find the song and read the first line or two. Then count in the song so everyonecan start strumming & singing at the same time. We’ve discovered that it’s important to have only one personlead the song so if you’re not leading the song, please try to harmonize with the song leader. When theharmonies ring, it's truly magical! Sometimes we found that it’s hard to start a song so if a song is not goingwell stop and sing & strum the chorus and then go back and start from the beginning. After we finish the song, we’ll move to the next person in the circle and repeat. We usually play/sing about 18songs. So if we have more than 18 people, everyone will not be able to choose a song. (but everyone will havehad so much fun singing & strumming along that it won’t matter : )Jam Tips:* Tune your instrument before the jam starts. Clip on tuners that sense vibration work best in noisy groupsettings, and are inexpensive. Ask to borrow a tuner if needed. Arrive late? Please tune up in the hallway.* Join or leave the circle on a break between songs.* Be mindful of the volume of your instrument. You don't want to drown out the other instruments/singers.* Let’s say you are a complete beginner with maybe 3 chords shakily at your disposal. Hang back and watchfor a while , and get the feel of the jam first. You can simply sing along during this time.* If all you know is the C chord in the song, strum with the Zen chord (strings muted) while waiting for it tocome, play the C chord at the appropriate time, then strum with the Zen chord once again when the song moveson to another chord. If your chord changes are not quite fast enough to keep up, try deliberately playing everyother chord , to give yourself more time.* It is OK to quietly ask the person next to you for information, perhaps about seemingly tricky chords, etc.* Try to locate someone who knows the song, and make sure you can see their hand well enough to identifychord shapes. If nothing else, you can see when the chords change, if not exactly what chord they are using.* Keep it fun & playful : ) Relax, laugh & have fun! You can always just stop playing & sing along!* Not familiar with a song? For a link to a YouTube playlist, please visit http://beavertonukulele.weebly.comYou are welcome to bring a song that you then choose when it’s your turn. The song should be well known.Bring 15 copies with the words & ukulele chords. Please fit the entire song on one page. Recommend usingTimes New Roman font with a minimum of 12 font size. Highlight the chorus in bold. Need lyrics/chords?Visit Dr. Uke's website at www.doctoruke.com or San Jose Ukulele Club at http://sanjoseukeclub.org/Please leave this songbook here.
