5THE LAW OF VIBRATIONCHAPTER I.THE LAW OF VIBRATIONTUDENTS of history find a continuous chainof reference to the mysterious influence ofone human mind over that of others. In theearliest records, traditions and legends may be foundreference to the general belief that it was possiblefor an individual to exert some weird, uncannypower over the minds of other persons, whichwould influence the latter for goodmore than this, the student will finding belief that certain individualsmental power which bendscircumstances to its might.someoranareevenevil.Andaccompany-possessed of"things" andAway back in the dim past of man's history onthis planet this belief existed, and it has steadilypersisted, in spite of the strenuous opposition ofmaterial science, even unto the present day.Theaffected the belief, and in theseofthe Twentieth Century it has takendawning dayson a new strength and vitality, for its adherentshave boldly stepped to the front, and confrontingyearsthehavenotdoubting materialistic thinkers, have claimed thenameof "Science" for this truth and have insistedonce and for all, from thecategorycredulity and ignorant phantasy.that it be taken,of superstition,

7THE LAW OF VIBRATIONthat willnot squeeze into their narrow theory-weil, "so much the worse for the fact," as a writerhas said, and they promptly ignore or dispute it.As a matter of truth, the investigator is not com-pelledto resort tometaphysical explanationstoac-for the phenomena of Mental Influence. Thevery facts of physical science itself, if rightlyinterpreted, will give the clue to the mystery, andcountwill point the steps of the honest investigator towardthe path where he may find the solution of the perplexing riddle. Although we know that the realsolution lies in themetaphysical realm, still evenphysical science will corroborate the facts of itsmetaphysical sister science, and instead of contradicting the latter will actually go far toward furnishing analogous facts and principles that willserve to give the scientist a physical basis for atheory of metaphysical facts. The student will see at once that so far as physical science is concerned, it must begin at thephenomenon of "Thought Transference," for inthat phase of the subject may be found an elementary principle in evidence in many other formsof phenomena. We have given many instances of"Thought Transference" in the two preceding volumes of this series, entitled "Mind Reading" and"Psychomancy," respectively, and so we need notrepeat the same in this place. The main fact is that

QMENTAL INFLUENCE"Thought Transference" does exist, and may beaccounted for upon purely scientific grounds, without calling in the truths of metaphysical thought. We know that this ispositive assertion, butmaystrong statement, andawebe demonstrated.also know that theLetusasameconsider this phaseof the subject.ln the first place, physical science teaches thatunderlying all forms, degrees and apparent differencesin matter and energy, there is to be fests in what is known as "Vibrations" Everything in the material world is in vibration-evermanifestingahigh degreeof motion.bration there would beWithout vi-no such thingmaterialelectronic-corpuscles whichscience teaches compose the atom, up through theatom and molecule, until the most complex forms ofuniverse.Fromas athemanifested, there is the ever present ViAnd through all forms of energy, light, heat, electricity, magnetism and the rest, Vibrationis also ever present.ln fact, physical science itselfmatterarebration.teaches that not only is Vibration the basic forceunderlying other forces and the various forms ofmatter, but also that the apparent differences betweenthe various forms of matter, and also betweenare caused simply andthe various forms of energy,

THE LAW OF VIBRATION9solely by the varying degrees of Vibrationmani-fested.as the difference between the lowest tone thatbe distinguished by the ear of man, and thehighest note that can be distinguished by the sameorgan of sense, is merely a difference of the rate ofVibration-just as is the difference between the dullred color at one end of the spectrum, and the violetat the other end, with the intervening colors knownjustcanasindigo, blue, green, yellow andorange, with allthe combinations of shades arising fromas the difference between the greatestthem-justdegree ofcold known to science, and the greatest degree ofheat that can be conceived of-just as these greatdifferences due solely and wholly to varying ratesof Vibration-so is the difference between any andall forms of matter or force simply a matter of therateof Vibration.ln short, all material and physi-cal "Things" are simply manifestations of diEerentrates of Vibration--and notwithstanding their apparent diiferences are all merely manifestations of"infinite and eternal energy from which allthings proceed," their differences resulting merelyfrom the different degree of Vibration being manifested in them. Remember, that this is not "vaguesomephilosophy," or "airy metaphysics," or "spiritualisticvagaries" (to quote from the materialistic writers),but facts claimed and admitted by the greatest

10MENTAL INFLUENCEphysicalscientists of the age, as a. reference to theirtext books will prove to anyone.pictures andAndmorethanthis, anyintelligent physicalscientist will tell you that Science has every reasonto believe that there are great fields of energy andforce, the Vibrations of which are far too high foreventhe delicate instruments of science to record, but which nevertheless exist and manifest effects.lt was only the other day that Science was able to"catch" the "X-Rays" and other forms of highRadio-Activity, and yet these rays and forces hadalways existed. And tomorrow Science will perfectinstruments capable of registering still higher formsof energy. And bye-and-bye, some scientist willaninstrumentthat will register and recordperfectThought, and perhaps inwill perfect that instrument so thatit will not only record such Thought vibrations andwx: ves, but, like the phonograph, it will be able torf.produ' e and send forth similar vibrations so thatothrmay feel the thoughts, just as they now hearthe sounds from the phonograph. Such a predictionin no more wonderful than would have been theprediction of the telephone, the phonograph, thewireless telegraph and sundry other discoveries andinventions a hundred years ago.Did you ever think that there are colors that theeye cannot see, but which delicate instruments clear-the subtle vibrations oftimesomeone

The eye sees thelower rays, but the higher ones are detected onlyadapted for the purpose. Your eyethe X-Ray as it passes through the room, but the plate will catch it, and by its light a photograph may be made. The rays of light visible toinstrumentsbycannotseethe eye are only the lower ones-the higher onesfar beyond the power of the eye to record, andbeyond even the range of the most delicate instru-arementthere existhigh vibratoryraysrateasandtowavesdefyof light of suchevenits power torecord.Didyouby humanknow that therearesounds unheardthat the microphone will catch andThe scientific imagination dreams of in-magnify?strumentseverearsthat will catch the songs of the mite-likemagnify them until they can be distin-insects andguished. There are waves of electricity that maypass through your body, unperceived by you, andyet powerful enough to run machinery or light electric lights.Listen to the words of certain eminentscientists:Prof.Elisha Gray, a celebrated scientist andsaid: "There is much food for speculahasteacher, tion in the thought that there exist sound wavesthat no human ear can hear, and color waves oflight that no eye can see. The long, dark, soundless

18THE LAW OF VIBRATIONThere is but one Truth, and it manifests on allplanes-the Spiritual; the Mental; and the Physical-and its manifestations agree and coincide. So noMentalist need fear the test of Physical Science, for each plane will bear out the facts and phenomenaof the ones below or above it-the Three are butvarying phases of the One.ln this little workwehug close to the plane of Physical Science, because by so doing we will be able to make theshallsubject much clearertemptedterms.toexpressThere isnoto manythan ifwehadat-the teaching in Metaphysicalcontradiction in the end.Eachbit of Truth must dovetail into every other bit, forall are parts of the Whole.

MENTAL INFLUENCE14CHAPTER II.THOUGHT llofWe also quoted two distinguished scientistswhose words showed that there were fields ofmatter.vibratoryenergy notfilled by any known forms ofthe inference being that inasmuch as thereare no gaps in nature's processes these unknownfields must be occupied by certain forms of energyenergy, known as yet to physical science. The teachingsof the occultists of all lands and ages, as also thosenotof modern Mental Science, are to the effect that theMind, in its manifestation of Thought in the brain, generatesation, whichvibratoryform of energy ofintensely high Vibra-be, and is, projected infrom the brain of the thinker, andenergy maywaveswhich then affects the brains of other persons withinits field of influence. All students of Mental Influence have noticed theclose resemblance that is manifested between thephenomena of electrical and magnetic energy on theone hand and the phenomena of mental energy onthe other. So close is the analogy that one may takethe proven facts of science relating to electrical and

15THOUGHT WAVESmagnetic phenomena and confidently proceed withthe certainty of finding a strikingly close corre-spondencethe recognition of this fact isin the mental field to groupunder their notice, and tothe theory and practice of Mentalphenomena thatworkoutphenomena. Andhelping the workerstogether the variedin the field of mentalcomeInfluence.ln the first place it isnow afact well known andaccepted by investigators that the generation ofThought and the manifestation of Mental Statesoccasions a "burning up" of brain matter, and theconsequent production of a form of energy of highvibratory power. Physiologists recognize this fact, and thetext books make reference to it.Lvperihave shown that the temperature of the braiis increased in accordance with the fzitwnsity ofments Feeling and Thought, and that thereageneration ofenergyandaisadoubtedlyconsumption of braina very close resemblance to theof the generation of electrical energy. Andthis being conceded, it follows that this energy oncereleased must be emanated or sent forth from thematterwhich bearsprocessbrain ina manner akin to the emanation of otherknown forms of energy, i. e., in the form of "waves"of vibratory force. Light and Heat travel in thisway-so do electricity and magnetism-so do theforces of Radio-Activity. And the investigators of

MENTAL INFLUENCE16.Mental Influence have demonstrated by their experiments that there are such things as ThoughtWaves, Thought-Radiation, Thought-Induction, andmany other phases of manifestation similar to thatexhibited by electricity and magnetism.Flammarion, the well-known and eminent French"We sum up,scientist, has said on this subject:ourobservationstherefore,by the concluprecedingsion thatonemindcanactatadistanceuponanother, without the habitual medium of words, anyotherappears tovisibleusmeansofcommunication.altogether unreasonabletoorltreject thisconclusion if we accept the facts. This conclusionwill be abundantly demonstrated. There is nothingunscientific, nothing romantic in admitting that anidea can influence a brain from a distance.Theaction of one human being upon another, from adistance, is a scientific fact; it is as certain as theexistence of Paris, of Napoleon, of Oxygen, or ofSirius."The same authority also states:"Therecan be no doubt that our physical force creates amovement in the ether which transmits itself afarlike all movements of ether, and becomes perceptibleto brains in harmony with our own.The transformation of a psychic action into an ethereal movement, and the reverse, may be analogous to whattakes place on a telephone, where the receptiveplate. which is identical with the plate at the other

17THOUGHT WAVESend, ted, thereconstructssonorousmovement transmit-by means of sound, but electricity. Butthese are only comparisons."When a Thought or Feeling is generated in themind or brain of a person the energy generatednotflows forth from the brain of the person in the formsof waves of mental energy, spreading from the im-neighborhood of the thinker to a distanceproportioned to the strength of the thought or feeling. These Thought-Waves have the property ofawakening Simik-1; vibrations ,,ir1.t.he n§11d§ 9 h§fP1ield of f ;;5gLa rdingmediateui'''the laws of Mental induction, which law shall beexplained in the next chapter.toAsweproceed withourconsideration of the sub-ject of Mental lnfluence, in the succeeding chapters,we shall see the many and varied forms of manifestation of Thought-Waves. At this point we shallmerely view the phenomena in a general way.Thought-V/aves are manifested in a variety offorms and phases. Some are the waves emanatedfrom the minds of all thinkers, unconsciously andwithout purpose, and usually without much force.Others are sent forth with great force, and travelfar, manifesting a degree of influence commensuratewith the force with which they are projected. Othersare directed purposely toward certain individuals orplaces, and travel along rapidlyinastraight lineto

The force is the same, but the degree of its power, and the measure of itseffect, is determined by the conditions of its sendingforth. The vibratory force of these Thought-Wavesdoes not cease with the sending forth of the wave, but persists' foralon timflterwards justina roompersistsEr the fire in theasheatstovehasbeenextinguished-just as the perfume of theflower exists in a room long after the flower has beenremoved-just as a ray of light travels throughspacethefor millions of miles, and for centuries afteritself has been blotted out of existence-starand all forms of vibratory energy persistimpulse has beenwithdrawn-so do the vibrations of Thought con-iustasanyin manifestation after the initial

THOUGHT WAVEStinue19long afterthe thought, yet, long after thethem forth has passed into dust. There are many places today filled with thethought-vibrations of minds long since passed outof the body. There are places filled with the strongvibrations of tragedies long since enacted there.Every place has an atmosphere of its own, arisingfrom the thought vibrations set in motion by thevarious persons who have inhabited or occupiedthem.Every city has its own mental atmospherewhich has its effect upon persons moving into them. Some are lively, some dull, some progressive, somebrain whichsentold-fogyish,some moral, some immoral-the resultof the character of the early settlers and leadingspirits of the places. Persons moving into theseaffected by the atmosphere, and eithergeneral level, or else, if strong enough, help to change the mental tone of the place. Sometimes a change in conditions bring a large influxof new people to the town, and the mental waves ofthe newcomers tend to bring about a marked changein the local mental atmosphere. These facts havebeen noticed by many observing people who were, perhaps, not familiar with the laws and principlesunderlying the phenomena. Many have of course noticed the differing atmostowns aresinktothestores, oH'ices and other places of business. Some of such places give one an air of confidencepheres of

Let achange in the management occur and see what achange soon manifests itself.Did you ever notice the mental atmospheres ofthe houses you happened to visit? You may experiforthence and recognize all of the varying notes in themental scale of their occupants. From some thresholds Harmony manifests itself, while others breatheyou step over the threshold. Some radiate mental warmth, while others seem ascold as an iceberg. M-ENFTAL INFLUENCE22CHAPTER III.MENTAL INDUCTION.Swestated in thenomenapreceding chapter, the phea strikingof Mental Influence bearsanalogy to that of electrical or magneticNot only is this so in the phase of waveenergy.motion and transmission, but also in the phase ofSsinduction, lnlQtas wephysicalshallseepresently.science the term Induction is used toindicate thatquality in a manifestation of energyreproduce in a second object thevibrations manifesting in the first object, withoutwhich tendstodirectcontact between the two bodies.A magnetwill induce magnetism in another object removedfrom it in space. An electrified object will tend toproduce similar vibrations in another object byinduction, over great spaces. Heat waves travelalong the ether, and tend to produce heat vibrations in objects far removed, notably in the case ofthesunand the earth.Even soundwaveswill af-fect other objects in this way, as in the well knowninstance of the glass or vase "singing" in responsethe musical note sounded afar of. ln fact, weand hear by processes similar to those described. And in this same manner do the Thought-Wavescarry the vibrations of the mind sending them forthtosee

MENTAL INDUCTION23great distances, or lesser ones. tending to set upsimilar vibrations in the minds of other personstowithin their field of force. Thus a person feeling astrong degree of anger will pour forth waves of thatdegree of mental vibration, which, coming in contact with the brains of other persons, tend to setup a similar feeling or emotion and thus cause theperson to "feel cross" or "peevish" or even to manifest a similar angry state of mind.We all knowhowsoneasilyiniight is started by a very angry persending forth violent vibrations. Oneaa roomhas but to remember the instances of mob violenceeasily the "contagion of hate and anger"people who allow themselves to beinfluenced. And not only is this true of undesirableemotions and feelings, but also of desirable ones. The influence of a good man who happens to bestrong mentally spreads among those around him, influencing them for good.Orators, actors, preachers and teachers send forthstrong mental currents which tend to producetoseehowspreadamongmental conditionsthe part of their hearers correspondingfeeling held by the mind of thespeaker. When you remember how this speakertoontheor how that actor made youshiverwith fear. or laugh with joy.pity, you will see how Mental Induction acts. But not only is this true when we are in the actualswayedyourweep withfeelings,

24MENTAL INFLUENCEpresence of the person sending out the ThoughtWaves, but it is equally true that we are influencedby persons far removed from us in space, oftenwithout their knowledge or intent, although sometimes (in the case of one who understands the principle) with full knowledge and intent. The ether with whichspace isfilled carries thesethought-waves in all directions, and the surface ofthe earth, particularly in the densely occupied portons, isfilledwiththesewaves.Thesewavescarrying the mental vibrations, coming in contactwith each other, tend to set up combinations on onehand, or else neutralize each other on the otherThat is to say, if two sets of waves of a similar nature meet there is likely to be a combinationformed between them just as between two chemicalshaving an affinity for each other. In this way the"mental atmospheres" of places, towns, houses, etc.,are formed. On the other hand if two currents ofopposing vibrations come in contact with eachother, there will be manifested a conflict betweenthe two, in which each will lose power in proportion to its weakness, and the result will be eithera neutralization of both or else a combination having vibrations of an average rate. For instance, ifhand.of mental energy meet, one being aand the other of Hate, they willofLovethoughtneutralize each other if they are equal, or if one betwocurrents

25MENTAL INDUCTION-istronger than the other, it will persist but robbedof much of its strength. lf it were not for this neu-tralizing effectwestray currents ofwould be largely at the mercy ofthought. Nature protects us inthis way, and alsoconsiderable extent.by renderingusimmune toaBut nevertheless we are affected by these wavesa considerable extent, unless we have leamed tothrow them oE by a knowledge of the laws and anenforcement of them by practice. We all knowhow great waves of feeling spread over a town, cityorcountry, sweeping people 0E their balance. Great waves of political enthusiasm, or war-spirit,or prejudice for or against certain people, or groupsof people, sweep over places and cause men to actin a manner that they will afterward regret whentotheycometothemselves and consider theiractsincold blood. They will be swayed by demagoguesor magnetic leaders who wish to gain their votes orpatronage; and they will be led into acts of mobor similar atrocities, by yielding to theseof "contagious" thought. On the other handwe all know how great waves of religious feelingsweep over a community upon the occasion of somegreat "revival" excitement or fervor. The effect of these Thought-Waves, so far as thepower of induction is concerned, of course dependsvery materially upon the strength of the thought orviolence, waves,

20MENTAL INFLUENCEin the mind sending themThe majority of persons put but little forceinto the mental manifestations, but here and thereis to be found a thinker whose Thought-Waves arepractically "a stream of living will," and which offeeling being manifestedforth.have a very strong inductive effect upon theminds of others with whom the waves come in contact. But it likewise follows that
