The only exception ismetered checkout titles, which can be previewed but must be checked out in order to gain full access.Additionally, users must check out a title before the download functionality will be available in the MackinVIAapp.To check out a title, users will log into their Backpack accounts and then select the Checkout button next tothe desired resource.MackinVIA administrators can limit the number of checkouts per user from 1-99 titles. Additionally, the loanperiod can be set from 1-21 days.If users want to return a resource prior to the due date, they can click the Return button next to the title fromwithin their Backpack accounts.

If email addresses are provided, thesystem will also send an email notification when the resource becomes available.Read Aloud FeaturesThe MackinVIA Reader includes text-to-speech with adjustable playback speed, voice options, and active texthighlighting. The availability of this feature is determined by the publisher. Additionally, Mackin offers ReadAlongs which are eBooks that feature embedded human-voice narration with synchronized highlighting. As it isread, each sentence is highlighted with the current word emphasized.HighlightingUsers can highlight a portion of text within an eBook and choose between a variety of color options or anunderline option. This information is saved to their Backpack accounts and can be accessed at any time throughthe Notebook feature as described below.

From the Notebook, users can add, edit, and delete notes, as well as change the highlightcolor. The “General Note” option allows users to add notes that pertain to the Notebook as a whole and/or to aparticular title. Additionally, notes can be searched by keyword and filtered by highlight color, date, and resourcefrom within the Notebook.BookmarksUsers can add bookmarks to pages within an eBook or tracks within a digital audiobook. Bookmarks can bereferenced later by accessing the Notebook within the title. Users can click on the entry to be directed to thatpage/track.Interactive DictionaryWe have partnered with Merriam-Webster to provide an age-appropriate dictionary (selected by theadministrator) within the MackinVIA Reader. Users can highlight any word and select the Dictionary icon to seethe definition, part of speech, and pronunciation for that word. Users have the option to stay in the dictionary andsearch for other words. All eBooks on MackinVIA have the interactive dictionary capability.

We will work with you to make sure purchases meet theneeds of the collection as well as the licensing requirements of our publishing partners. At the onset of the project, each library will be set up with itsown MackinVIA account. This is the only account users will need in order to gain access to digital purchases fromMackin, regardless of the purchasing entity. Individual site purchases of digital content will automatically flow intoMackinVIA. Any digital content purchased at the consortium level will be distributed to the requested individualaccount(s) and the licensing and circulation will be seamlessly managed by MackinVIA. This will allow users to see

How will the respondent notify participating libraries when or if titles are added or subtracted fromcollections or when significant changes are made to the content, indexing, or interface to any collection?Administrators can be set up to receive notifications that include email alerts when new resources have beenpurchased and added to MackinVIA, as well as when digital subscriptions are approaching expiration or haverecently expired.Additionally, Mackin can notify the consortium and/or participating libraries of application changes or featureenhancements. All upgrades/releases are conducted quarterly and are pushed out automatically to customers.Communication is delivered via email, as well as online in our Technical News:https://www.mackin.com/hq/about/tech-news/.9. How will the respondent notify participating libraries of changes to licensing agreements and other usepolicies?Mackin will notify the consortium/participating libraries if/when substantive changes are made to our policies. Allcurrent policies and agreements can be found on Mackin’s websites.10. How are the customer’s selectors notified about expiring materials?MackinVIA administrators can turn on subscription expiration notifications. If this notification is enabled, an emailwill be sent at the start of each month highlighting which subscription digital resources are approaching expirationin the coming months or have recently expired.11. How are expired materials removed from the collection?Expired materials are removed from the collection on the expiration date or when the checkout limit is reachedand will no longer appear on the patron side of MackinVIA. The administrator side of MackinVIA lists expiredresources and directs selectors to Mackin.com to renew the resources.12. How will the respondent compensate the consortium for content that is removed by the respondent fromthe shared collection?Titles will only be removed from the account if they are subscription-based and have reached their expirationdate/checkout limit. The consortium can choose to renew these titles if desired to maintain access.13. How does the respondent add “copies” to titles in the existing collection when needed?The consortium can choose to purchase additional copies of titles at any time based on demand and user needs.

How are titles added or made available in the consortium collection?The consortium can choose to add to the collection at any time based on demand and user needs.15. How can titles be removed from the consortium collection?MackinVIA administrators can activate and deactivate titles in the collection at any time. Inactive titles will beinaccessible from the patron side of MackinVIA and can be reactivated as needed. As previously mentioned,subscription titles will automatically be removed from the patron side of MackinVIA when they reach theirexpiration date/checkout limit.16. Can the consortium set a holds ratio for automatic purchase of additional copies as needed?Mackin can set up desired administrators with automated email alerts to notify them if resources are approachingthe point where all copies are in use. These alerts can assist with decisions to purchase additional copies of highlyused titles or aide in future collection development.17. Please explain any lag time between the publication dates of print new titles in the subject areas offeredand the time in which they are available through the e-content service in digital format.Titles become available to Mackin as publishers make them assessible in digital format.18. What is the respondent’s policy with regard to fair use?Please refer to the attached MackinVIA Platform License Agreement.19. Montana State Library is interested in opportunities for increasing access to e-content throughcollaboration with other state library agencies as well as with authors, public libraries, publishers, and othercontent creators, distributors, and organizations. Please describe any collaborative initiatives in which yourcompany has engaged and interoperability with platforms such as the Digital Public Library of America.A unique feature of the MackinVIA platform is the ability to Bring Your Own License (BYO). Existing digitalresources, state-provided resources, or Open Educational Resources can be added to MackinVIA. Wheneverpossible, Mackin will work with the vendor of the product to authenticate it within MackinVIA, so no additionallogins are necessary. Additionally, the Add New Resource tool allows digital resources, such as educational links,videos, or Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) resources, to be discoverable alongside other digital content. Thesefeatures provide a single place for users to access all pertinent educational material.20. Does the respondent provide the option to automatically acquire or purchase OCLC MARC records forpurchased titles? Describe the process for delivering catalog records to the consortium for participatinglibraries.Mackin provides free customized MARC records with all digital purchases. Records are delivered in MARC21format by email or download from our website and can be loaded into all major ILSs. Each record contains a link to
