Justin Albinder and Michael Lamendola will be honored at theOctober 8, 2013 meeting.PRESENTATIONS: Website DemonstrationMrs. Kriss introduced Dr. Donald Murphy, Director of Math and Information Systems, who offered a briefoverview of the new website. Dr. Murphy stated that the goal is to make it more user friendly anddemonstrated how to maneuver through the website.September 17, 2013Page 1

SUPERINTENDENT’S UPDATE / COMMENTS REGARDING TONIGHT’S AGENDAMrs. Kriss stated that Superintendent’s Conference Day held on September 3rd, A Day of DiscoveryEducation, was an exciting day with positive feedback from our teachers.The Superintendent received a phone call from Senator Flanagan requesting that the Commissioner ofEducation and Regent Tillis be allowed to visit our Middle School and the Pines on opening day. Mrs. Krissthanked teachers and staff who prepared for the visit which provided a wonderful opportunity to share ourconcerns regarding slowing down the New York State testing process, creating opportunities for all children,and Common Core implementation. Regent Tillis, as a member of the Board of Regents, offered to attend aCommunity Forum to listen to the concerns of the community.Mrs. Kriss announced we have three semi-finalists in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Competition, BrianEng, Sarah Mackin and Varun Mehta.The Superintendent offered congratulations to Suzanne Cipri and Meagan Ricker, co-teaching partners atForest Brook, who will be presenting a workshop, Planning and Implementing Differentiated Lessons in Cotaught Classrooms, at the New York State Council for Exceptional Children Annual Convention.Mrs. Kriss acknowledged the parents attending the meeting and thanked those parents who contacted her andMr. Giordano to seek clarification regarding the new students at Forest Brook. She indicated she will do herbest to respond to concerns and questions but stated she is guided by law and will not be able to share somepieces of information. Mrs. Kriss explained that the district was notified in July that a facility opened withindistrict boundaries. Under the McKinney-Vento Law, we are bound to provide an education to the childrenwho reside in the facility. The district worked diligently with the county to make sure that the number ofstudents entering our district would not overburden the district. Ten children are now in Forest Brook fromthis facility. Mrs. Kriss explained that she choose Forest Brook based upon class size and the availability ofsupport services for the children. Decisions on future placements of students from the facility, if any, will bemade in the same manner.The Superintendent indicated that Senator Kennedy offered to sponsor a meeting with himself, Mr. O’Neill,Acting Commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Social Services, and a representative from theCounty Executive’s Office to address community questions and concerns about future implications from thisfacility.QUESTION AND COMMENTS REGARDING TONIGHT’S AGENDA ONLYCommunity members asked numerous questions concerning: The placement and transportation of homeless students attending district schools Sources of aid available to the district when educating homeless students Regulations concerning immunizations and how they apply to homeless students Class sizeA motion was made by David Barshay to extend the question comment section at this time for an additional10 minutes until (10:40 p.m.), seconded by Geri Richter.Motion carried 6-1 (Rob Scarito opposed)The discussion continued as community members discussed concerns about the size of the kindergartensections at the Pines and further questions regarding immunization.September 17, 2013Page 2

DISCUSSION MATTERS: Bretton Woods Ceiling and Lighting ProjectMr. Stucchio introduced Mr. John Grillo, architect, who explained the Bretton Woods Ceiling and LightingProject. Board questions and concerns involved whether we could use the funds to put in air conditioninginstead of the fans and if the fans were durable and safe for use in a gym. Mr. Stucchio responded that, underthe resolution, the funds were designated for lighting and fans only. Mr. Grillo assured the Board that the fanswere built for use in gyms and the construction was durable.Mr. Fortmeyer asked for a data sheet on this particular fan which Mr. Grillo agreed to supply.This item can be put on the next agenda for action.NEW BUSINESSMr. Scarito asked if a separate bus is used for the 10 children from the homeless shelter and has the currentclass size policy changed. Mr. Stucchio advised that a mini bus is being used.
