Super-curricular suggestionsStrong applicants to Cambridge and other competitive universities tend to have explored theirchosen subject through wider reading outside the classroom, as well as doing very well intheir GCSEs and A-levels. We call this sort of exploration ‘super-curricular’, as it builds onand enhances what you are studying in school. We do not expect you to pay for this sort ofexploration and have endeavoured to provide resources that are mostly freely available. This selection of suggested reading lists and resources has been gathered from theCambridge departmental and College websites, other universities and other sources on theinternet. These lists are certainly NOT ‘required reading’ for Cambridge applicants. Theysimply provide some suggestions for places to start exploring your own interests in yourchosen subject independently - you do not need to engage with any of the specific websites, books, podcasts etc mentioned and can easily find your own alternatives. The followinglists are suggestions only.It is important to read critically by thinking carefully about the arguments, assumptions andevidence presented by the author. Reading is a great way to explore subjects that you findinteresting – but there are many other ways to deepen your understanding: investigate yourlocal museums, monuments, galleries and natural features, and think analytically aboutnature, machinery or the built environment. The best thing about super-curricular activities is that there are no exams or deadlines toworry about – you are free to follow your own lines of enquiry into the areas that interest youthe most. Rather than seeing this as a ‘tick box exercise’ to give you something to writeabout in your personal statement, you should take time to explore things that you genuinelyfind interesting and see where your investigations lead you.Click on a subject link below to find some suggestions to help you explore your subject, or tryone of the broad topic links at the bottom of the page. It will help applicants to explore theirsubject beyond the classroom not only to learn more about the subject, but also to confirmthe decision whether or not to read the subject at university. There is no minimum amount ofsuper-curricular activity expected of our applicants; they tend to explore their subject for thesake of interest. There are some very useful general resources helpful to all subjects here.Last updated 03/02/2022
