Shadowlands lives at the intersec-tion of pain and joy. When the play begins, we see C.S. Lewis as a man confident in his studied ideas about the meaning of suffering in the world. However, his settled middle-aged life is absent both romantic love and the pain that such love risks. Then Joy walks in. And over the course of the play she upends
