The gift creates the Florida Hospital Endowed Fund for MedicalEducation, and will help the Orlando Campus meet itseducational goals throughout the central Florida community.Dr. Muszynski, Dean of the Orlando Campus, said thatthe gift “represents the synergy between an institutionlike Florida Hospital and Florida State University. Ourmissions are very similar. We care about Primary Care, rural medicine, the under-served, the elderly, and minority populations. That is our mission, and it is in linewith what Florida Hospital is doing within its own institution.”The donation comes during the year that the OrlandoCampus is celebrating its 10th anniversary of educatingthird- and fourth-year medical students. “Currently, 13alumni are practicing in the Orlando area and 37 arecompleting residencies or fellowships in Orlando. Additionally, 13 members (12 percent) of the 113-memberClass of 2013 have matched with residency programs inOrlando, including five at Florida Hospital.” (med.fsu.edu)Rich Morrison, Regional Vice President of Governmentand Public Affairs at Florida Hospital and OrlandoCampus Community Board Member, said that “[thedonation] is not a gift, it’s an investment. It is a recognition of [Florida Hospital’s] support of FSU College ofMedicine’s mission, and of how they’re going abouteducating much-needed physicians in our community.”Mr. Morrison was presented an honorary plaque torecognize his on-going support of FSU COM. He ispictured below hanging an additional plaque outside theOrlando Campus classroom, which is now named the“Florida Hospital Excellence in Education Classroom”in honor of their generous donation.

PAGE 2Dean’s Message2013 marks the 10th year of the Orlando Regional Campus of the FloridaState University College of Medicine. We were one of the three inauguralcampuses of the grand experimentthat would become FSU in Orlandoand beyond. Now with a decade ofturning out medical student graduatesof the highest caliber with data showing that, on average, they are outperforming their peers nationally, we canbe rightly proud.Michael J. Muszynski, MD Our story is now getting out and thereis new appreciation of our mission andthe fact that we accomplished it in full. This awareness hasbeen at the national level from early in our college’s history, but now our local communities and our partners are sharingin our successes. Nationally, we can look to the opinion ofleaders in medical education such as Jordan Cohen, M.D.,former President of the Association of American MedicalColleges and Current Chairman Arnold P. Gold Foundation. He stated, “I’ve just been overwhelmed by the quality and thepassion and the commitment that [FSU] students have. Thatreally speaks volumes for the success of the model of medicaleducation that you’ve introduced here.” And as an ultimatecomplement, the majority of the newest medical schools andthose under development utilize some form of our model. From a statewide perspective we are proud that greater than60% of our graduates have returned to practice in Florida,22% being in rural areas. The 60% figure is especially strikingwhen one notes that about 70% of our graduates leave thestate for their residency training. Nationally, only around 30%of students practice in the state where they attended medicalschool. Now, the greater Orlando area is benefitting from thereturn of FSU College of Medicine graduates. Currently, 13(and soon to be 15) of them practice in the area, and moreare coming. Why do we double the national rate of graduates practicing intheir medical school state? It is a combination of careful selection of students during the application process, our geographically distributed model of clinical education, and anamazing base of community faculty and committedhealthcare partners. The Orlando Regional Campus has beenblessed with those superb partnerships, including the localteaching hospitals. The front page of this issue of the campusnewsletter details the generous gift from Florida Hospital astheir acknowledgement of the success of our partnership andthe parallels between our missions. With such support, evengreater things are to come.Michael J. PAGE 4Dr. Rosemary Laird is AGS Clinician of the YearDr. Laird, pictured, was namedthe American GeriatricsSociety 2013 Clinician ofthe Year. Here are somewords from Dr. Laird aboutthe award:“First of all it is trulyhumbling to receive thishonor and without question Ishare this honor with myteam at Health First AgingServices and my extendedfamily at FSU Department ofGeriatrics as a GeriatricianI know that the work ofcaring for frail elders is not accomplished well by any oneperson. As a medical student, Geriatrics interested mebecause of the complexity of the medical decision making. In putting those decisions into a working care plan yourealize very quickly you need a strong and multidisciplinarycare team -including family and professional caregiversworking with you and your patients. And its largely becauseof the collaborative and team nature of care that I enjoy mywork so much. When I left academics for a community based setting I was hopeful we could create an academiclevel of quality programs and providers if you will, but in acommunity setting. Not a day goes by that a patient or family member doesn'tpoint out to me how much they enjoy coming to our clinicbecause of how much they can tell we care about them. Andthis is despite the fact that for many of these patients, we donot have a "cure" or easy fix for their ailments. It doesn'tseem likely they'd be thanking us for not curing them, doesit? I am proud to be a geriatrician and to work with a teamof professionals who practice patent-centered and evidencebased care and deliver it with unwavering respect andcompassion no matter the frailties of our patients. The support and connection to FSU Department ofGeriatrics has been a tremendous help to me over the years, and our whole team looks forward to having students rotatewith us.While our out-patient geriatric specialty and geriatricpsychiatry clinics are the most active of our program, I havealso enjoyed an opportunity to bring a wide range of qualitygeriatric care programs and services to our community viaother programs and services of our health system. We havea personal response program, Nurse Case Management,Home visiting Provider program, Memory Care CaregiverSupport program, and a family caregiver resource centercalled the Center for Family Caregivers. To have the support of a community-based not for profithealth system has really allowed us to live up to ourprograms overall mission:Dedicated to caring for older adults, and supporting theircaregivers.”To read more about the American Geriatrics Society, clickhere. For more information about Dr. Laird and the Clinician ofthe Year award, click here.Faculty SpotlightDr. Aurelio Duran, pictured left, was recentlynamed Vice Chief of Staff of Orlando Healthfor the 2013-2015 term. First year medicalstudents included: Silvana Rolong,John Dudley, Jason Miles, RyanFitzgerald and William CarraherStross. Second year studentsincluded: Sarah-Ashley Robbins,Ryan Berger, Kevin Yan, AnLawrence, and Joana Meadors.Overall, Florida had greatrepresentation with 38 medicalstudents from Florida medicalschools. Half of the Florida studentsmet with Bill Nelson’s office whilethe other half met with MarcoRubio’s office. There were two main issues thatstudents were advocating for thisyear. The first was increasing thenumber of residency positions from100,000 to 115,000 positions. TheSenate bill (S 1627) supporting this isbeing introduced by our Senator, BillNelson. A similar bill (HR 6352) willalso be introduced in the House ofRepresentatives. The second issuemedical students advocated for waschanging the graduate medicalstudent loans to a variable rate with acap at a 5% interest rate. Currently, the loan rate is fixed at 6.8%.This was the most exciting event Ihave been a part of in my four yearsof medical school. As students, weneed to express ourselves to ourrepresentatives in Congress.
