Hello friends,I am writing this letter to explain what I have learned about how the Catholic school system here inYoungstown works. I have had many questions about this from several parents and others, and upon speaking tothe diocese I have received clarification. As many of you know, in years past, almost every Youngstown parish had aschool attached to it. A family would become a member of that parish and their children would attend that schoolreceiving the parishioner rate which was always lower than the non-parishioner rate. As time has gone on many ofthose schools have closed, whether they be elementary, junior high, or high schools.Currently, there are only several Catholic schools that are still open in the area. The policy in the Diocese ofYoungstown now (and has been this way for some time) is that if a student is a parishioner at one church andattends school at another church, the school sends a letter requesting an amount of money (a subsidy) from thechurch where that student is a parishioner, and the home parish pays that subsidy which offers the family theparishioner rate tuition while allowing them to remain parishioners at their home parish, and without having to signup or switch churches to get the discounted rate.To give a real-world example, if one of our St. Maron’s children attends a Catholic school in the area and thenon-parishioner tuition rate is 5,000 and the parishioner rate is 3,000, when registering the child at the school thefamily is asked what parish they attend. If they list St. Maron Church as their parish, the Catholic school sends us aletter asking for 2,000 to subsidize that student, which our parish is expected to pay, allowing that family to paythe parishioner rate without becoming parishioners at the school’s church. Many of our families in the past andnow in the present have become parishioners at the other church in order to receive the non-parishioner rate so asto shield St. Maron’s from bearing the financial brunt. This is admirable and I am truly thankful for this sacrifice. Inthe same breath, the way this Catholic school system works is probably the reason why many St. Maronparishioners were turned into parishioners at the church that has the school. We have lost many families because itwas too much of a burden to donate to two churches or to be involved in both the school/church and at St. Maroneither financially or physically or both. This policy or way of doing things may sound unfair or “not nice” but this happens to every parish in theDiocese that does not have a school and whose children attend a different church’s Catholic school. This policy hasalso helped the Diocese keep as many schools open as it can. Many are not aware that Catholic schools do notmake money for the parish; on the contrary, many and most are subsidized by the parish they are attached to orparishes in the area that help them.I am writing this letter to help clarify and bring understanding to this process. I am not against St. Maronpaying its’ “fair share” as all of the other Catholic churches in the area do for their youth and students. Catholiceducation is important and does not receive the same funding as public schools, hence the cost and the need tohelp subsidize it, allowing Catholic schools to continue in their mission. I think this issue merits a larger discussionabout how we would like to handle this as a parish in order to keep our parishioners here, maintain the connectionswith our younger generation, and continue to grow our parish. What is the appropriate way in which we addressthis and how do we find an amicable solution? Do we stay with the status quo or work to develop a strategy thatbenefits our parish and our parishioners? I look forward to hearing from you with your thoughts and suggestions.Perhaps we can have a town hall meeting on this issue in the near future.Sincerely,Fr. Tony
