President’s MessageWelcome to San Diego Continuing EducationHundreds of learning opportunities are presentedin this catalog. Free classes and certificate programsare offered in a variety of academic areas includingAdvanced Manufacturing, Health Care, Clean Energyand Information and Communication Technologies.These are priority sectors in San Diego County, whichmeans the free education and training studentsreceive from San Diego Continuing Education (SDCE)aligns with available jobs in San Diego.Students attend classes for many reasons and rangein age from 18 to 100 years. A recent semester hadmore than 145 different countries represented inthe student body. Hundreds of students are learninga new trade or sharpening an old skill, and manyare completing high school diplomas or learning tospeak English. Thousands attend classes that keepminds and bodies active to maintain health.SDCE students are determined, courageous andcrave knowledge. Students are committed tolearn—not for grades and advanced degrees, butto enrich their lives and the lives of their families.SDCE welcomes people who return to educationto complete high school diplomas, many whohave been away from school for years, and we helpthem succeed. Professionals including doctors andengineers can be found in SDCE computer labslearning advanced software applications or thelatest trends in media technologies. Hundreds moreare completing programs in child development orparent education or learning a trade to enter theworkforce.As a fully accredited educational institution, studentsreceive first-rate education, and faculty and staffare at the heart of our institution. Many come fromaround the globe, bringing with them diversity,experience and top academic credentials includingMaster’s and Doctorate degrees. 2. FREEDOM OF EXPRESSIONWelcome to San Diego Continuing Educationa. Freedom of expression affords the faculty,staff, and students the right to speakand write freely in accordance with theconstitutional protections of free speechwithout fear of retaliation. In particular:1. The District shall protect the rights offaculty to express their views in theclassroom that pertain to class content.While it is understood that controversyis often at the core of inquiry, suchcontroversy should be addressed in amutually respectful manner;2. The Districtprovides education at several levels, from adult basiceducation through sophomore level college degreeprograms. The District has three fully accreditedcolleges City, Mesa, and Miramar, and San DiegoContinuing Education, which is accredited by theAccrediting Commission for Schools, WesternAssociation of Schoools and Colleges.The District is governed by a Board of Trusteesconsisting of five voting members elected by thepeople of San Diego and a student trustee electedby District college students. The Chancellor, Dr.Constance Carroll, is the Chief Executive Officer incharge of day-to-day operations.

We were among thefirst community college continuing educationinstitutions in California to meet the standards forindependent accreditation from the AccreditingCommission for Schools, Western Association ofSchools and Colleges.
