Piller UPSAbout PillerThe ProblemSince its formation by Anton Piller in 1909, the companyPiller has been synonymous with electrical machines of thehighest quality and reliability. Today, Piller, from itsheadquarters in Germany and via its regional offices, representatives and distributors world-wide, continues thattradition into the 21st century. All around the globe complex electrical and electronicprocesses, information technology and automation govern ourmanufacturing, service industries, data management andcommunications. As these markets continue to become moreglobal and in the endeavour to maintain a competitive position, much of which must be done faster and more effectively, even24 hours a day every day. However, the nature of the problemvaries significantly. In some cases, large scale power demandsneed only short term ride through and stabilisation. In othercases, aggressive industrial loads need UPS with high peakhanding or large site distribution at medium voltage.Piller produces high performance power protectionsystems and converters. Combined with the highest levelsof client support and engineering excellence availableanywhere, Piller is internationally recognised as the mostrespected name in its field.Piller is a wholly owned subsidiary of the multi-disciplinedglobal UK engineering group, Langley Holdings plc.(www.langleyholdings.com)The SolutionThe security of the power is assured through the use ofUninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), whose sole purpose inlife is to provide continuity and quality of power at all times. ThePiller UNIBLOCK UBT is a UPS with complete flexibility for usein short term only ride through applications, or long termapplications, or co-generation.

Maximum power supply when compromise is not an optionThe UPS PrincipleThe system consists of the UNIBLOCK motor-generator, fullyintegrated into the switch-gear cabinet. The load is normallyfed via an isolating and coupling choke connected to the utilitysupply. The choke has a second tapped connection to the motorgenerator. In the event of short interruptions or completeoutages, the load is supported by a source which can be eithera conventional battery system or a Piller Powerbridge (kineticenergy store device). The choke provides near total isolationacross the UPS meaning that non-linear (harmonic rich) loadscan be fed by the UPS whilst the source sees an almost perfectsinusoidal input current. This UNIBLOCK UBT UPS principle offers exceptionally highefficiency. The UNIBLOCK MachineAt the heart of every Piller Rotary UPS is the UNIBLOCKmachine combining a motor and a generator in one, threephase synchronous unit. The windings of both componentsare incorporated in a shared stator and are excited by acommon rotor. A damper winding absorbs current harmonics, irrespective of load current and load power factor. The energytransfer from the motor to the generator takes place via directmagnetic coupling without loss and without electromechanical conversion. The UNIBLOCK has a high load-carrying capacity and is arobust, highly efficient design.UNIBLOCK UBTFrequency50 Hz60 HzVoltage380 V up to 25kV380 V up to 25kVModule Ratings400 kVA - 2 MVA400 kVA - 2 MVA

Lowest capital cost for super-high densityapplications. Reduced maintenance costs.Bi-directional storage (Powerbridge)Superior frequency stability on both load acceptance and rejection. Reducingproblems for your critical loads.Simple maintenanceNo complicated and prolonged overhaul requirements.Minimises risk and cost.Optimised designLower Total Cost of Ownership.

Fewer components, many functionsLow Total Cost of OwnershipReliabilityThe Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for any UPS is often oversimplified. It is a combination of the capital expense for theUPS, the electrical operating costs, the routine maintenanceand overhaul. However, it is also dependant upon the requiredsurrounding infrastructure which has to include switchgear, cabling, power factor correction and cooling needs togetherwith building space costs and reduction in net useable space. When properly addressed, the TCO analysis will often showthat there is a significant reduction in pay-back period if theright solution is adopted.Owing to their particular reliability, UNIBLOCK systems are theonly alternative today when low maintenance costs and longlife must be obtained in the higher power ranges. The PillerUNIBLOCK UBT characteristics are:The UNIBLOCK UBT guarantees lower operating andmaintenance costs through: Very simple, economic maintenance and overhaulElimination or reduction of air conditioningrequirementsReduced space requirementCyclic maintenance and care work all undertaken onsiteExtremely high electrical efficiencyOptimised system design MTBF of 1.38 million hoursProven reliability due to the use of Pillermotor/generator combinations in thousands of unitsFully redundant control electronics and robust powersemi-conductors ensuring the highest reliability for thesystem as a wholeBrushless design and a simple bearing arrangementthat is greased while the Piller UNIBLOCK machine isoperational‘UNIBLOCK UBT lower operating andmaintenance costs’

Your requirements determine the solutionOptimised ProtectionResearch shows that, in Europe for example, mainsdisturbances lasting more than 10ms occur almost daily, jeopardising or substantially disrupting the operation ofelectrical equipment. Over 60% of all mains failures last morethan 100ms and yet only some 2% continue for more than afew seconds. In countries where the power supply grid is stilldeveloping, the statistics show more outages which also tendto be longer. The unique design of the Piller UNIBLOCK UBT gives asufficient ride-through capability for virtually all outages( 98%) regardless of the ride-through option.

Configuration optionsThe Stand Alone UBTIn normal operation, load is fed from the utility viaa coupling choke. This choke is precisely balancedwith the motor generator so that disturbances onthe utility side are prevented from crossing to theload side. Furthermore, harmonic load currents aresupplied from the motor generator and not theutility, giving rise to a sinusoidal input current. Thecoupling choke also allows for a very wide inputvoltage deviation whilst maintaining narrowtolerances at the output. Even under the mostadverse upstream short circuit fault conditions, this equipmentinherently limits reverse fault current to less than 2x nominal. The Piller UBT Rotary UPS can easily be employed in either lowor medium voltage systems. The UBT with Standby GeneratorsThe UBT can easily be integrated into a systemwith separate standby generators to give long termride-through. The generators can be remote to theUBT and even in different voltage elements of thesystem. Due to the ride-through energy beingbetween the load and standby generator, the Dieselengine sees no significant load step. Also, unlikestatic UPS systems, no over-dimensioning of thestandby generator is necessary because only realpower comes from this source and the reactivepower comes from the UNIBLOCK machine itself.

Configuration optionsThe UBT with Co-GenerationCo-generation plants are designed to make use of both theelectrical energy generated and the heat by-product. Suchsystems, by themselves, have the advantage of muchimproved overall efficiency but they tend to have extremelypoor dynamic behaviour. The UBT can be used to provide a link between the normallyautonomous co-generation plant and the utility such that powerquality is maintained either in utility operation or in island mode.Excess power from the co-generation plant can be exportedto the utility (subject to local regulations) with the safeknowledge that the UBT will isolate any effects arising fromutility failure. The UBT in High Power ApplicationsUNIBLOCK UBT Rotary UPS can be paralleled to 50 MVA (lessat low voltage), either with individual or common couplingchokes.Other configurations are easily realised: Hot standbyParallel redundantSystem system Isolated parallel busIsolated redundantCommon or individual bypass arrangements

Energy Storage SystemsPOWERBRIDGE optionPiller offers a battery-free option which gives the designerthe chance to save space andmaximise power density per unit. Not only that, but the Powerbridgewill absorb energy at the samerate as it can dissipate. Thismeans that frequency stabilityunder dynamic load conditionscannot be matched by anyother kinetic storage solution. With up to 21MWsenergy stored in Piller’sPowerbridge the ridethrough time is almostdouble that of the alternatives.Battery optionThe Piller UNIBLOCK UBT is also available with an optionfor batteries as the ride through source. The efficiency ofa battery solution is superior to any equivalent kineticenergy solutions but this must be traded against space. The UNIBLOCK system is also battery friendly, maximisingtheir service life and reducing costs. The batteries are notsubject to constant harmful DC ripple currents from rectifierinverter operation, and the UNIBLOCK's inherent kineticenergy enables micro-breaks to be bridged without cyclingthe DC support.UNIBLOCK UBT ContainerisedAs a variation to the plant room solution, Piller UNIBLOCK UBTis also available as a containerised unit. All componentsnecessary for operation are integrated into the containermaking the Piller UNIBLOCK UBT a transportable UPS systemready to set to work in a variety of locations or whereprogramme prevents protracted site activity.Advantages: Operating readiness immediately on connecting tothe mains No structural measures for noise attenuation, ventilation or cabling No expenditure for on site testing and commissioning No outlay on complex installation or plant roomconstruction Temporary use in different locations Reduced on site programme‘UNIBLOCK UBT has the greatest flexibility’
