Types of Middle School Programs Students are eligible to apply to middle school in the districtwhere they are zoned for middle school and when different thedistrict where they attend elementary school When you apply to a school, you are actually applying to programs at that schoolSome schools have more than one program, such as a Boroughwide Dual Languageprogram and a zoned program. Types of programs include: Zoned Programs: Open to students who live in a geographic zone District Programs: Open to students who attend elementary school in that district Boroughwide Programs: Open to students who are zoned to or attend elementaryschool in that borough Citywide Programs: Open to all NYC residents6

Middle School Admissions Seats Seat Groups- Each middle school has a specific number of seats for incomingstudents Available seats are divided into two groups- General Education (GE)- Students with Disabilities (SWD) Student applications will be automatically assigned to onegroup of seats based on the information provided in ATS- For students with disabilities, this is based on their currentIndividualized Education Program (IEP)9
Common Examples of Middle School Priority groups Sibling Priority 5th graders who have a sibling in 6th or 7th grade at a 6-8 middleschool 5th graders who have a sibling in K-7th at a K-8 schoolMultiples Priority Twins or multiples can merge their application so that they canattend the same middle schoolContinuing Students In a K-8 school, continuing 5th graders will have priority for middleschool seatsDistrict/Borough Priority 5th graders who live and/or go to school in a specific district orborough will have priority to attendthose middle schools10
Expectations: Normal Vs. New Normal Traditionally, the Middle School process has taken place in the Fall of astudent’s 5th grade year However, the past two years have had admissions cycles that tookplace during JanuaryAdmissions methods usually include Open, Screened, Audition based, andLanguage Proficiency based methods During the last two years, screened admissions methods were notusedSchool tours and information sessions are held by individual specificschools to further your understanding of the middle school School information sessions were held virtually for recent admissionscycles, but it is our hope that they resume in person tours forfamilies to visit the schools11

myschools MySchools is not the same as the NYC Schools Account MySchools is only for applying to schools Before the 2022-2023 admissions cycle begins, you willbe mailed a welcome letter that provides you withaccount creation codes to create a MySchools account For families who applied to Center School in 4thgrade, you will use the same MySchools account13
