Lighter weights for improved economyIt has been demonstrated that 50 kg cement bags need tohave a TEA value of 400 J/m2. 25 kg bags, in turn, have astrength requirement of 300 J/m2. Intensive R&D over the last25 years now allows Mondi to offer lightweight, strong,porous and economical sack kraft paper the world over.3-2-ONESack kraft paper is now so strong that 3-ply bags are veryseldom necessary. Instead, 2-ply bags made of strong, highporous grades (e.g. 2-ply 80 g/m2 Advantage Select) aredesigned to hold up to 50 kg of cement. For 20 kg to 35 kgbags, 1-ply 110 g/m2 (Advantage ONE) bags have proven tobe an innovative, very economical and successful solution.All climates and conditionsMondi supplies sack kraft paper to almost every corner of theworld. Bags made from our paper endure wet, dry, cold andhot climates – and very tough handling in a wide variety ofconditions. Less is more.CASE STUDYHolcim in the PhilippinesHolcim is the largest cement producer in the Philippines.Mondi has been the Holcims preferred paper supplier herefor many years. The number of paper cement bags consumedby Holcim has grown by one third since 2010. This growthlooks set to continue as more consumers experience paperand gain confidence in paper. Paper bags are preferred dueto their environmental credentials, plus two-ply high porousbags are less dusty throughout the supply chain and presentas a much cleaner package to the end customer.Two-ply high porous bags made of Mondi Advantage Selectsack kraft paper offer greater strength and lighter weight,and therefore cost savings as well. Moreover, the cementbags are characterized by superior tensile energy absorption(TEA) combined with high porosity. The success of the twocompanies’ close collaboration is built on sharing productand development expertise, and working together to improveboth bag performance and plant efficiency.CASE STUDYSephaku Cement in South AfricaSephaku Cement is the South African arm of Dangote Cement,a fully integrated cement company with headquarters inLagos, Nigeria. When Sephaku commissioned its first plant inSA in 2013, it decided to differentiate its packaging by usingbleached bags printed with a distinctive 4-colour design. Tothe best of our knowledge this is the first time worldwide thatbleached sack kraft paper has been used for commercialscale 50 kg cement bags. Sephaku approached the leadingSouth African bag converters, which were already workingclosely with Mondi, to produce the bags. They had to be twoply high porous with the outer ply bleached, and strong enoughto withstand the tough conditions on the SA market. In 2014we set about helping our customers optimise their convertingand cement packaging performance. Although the 2 x 90 gsmconstruction was working very well, we wanted to improve thebag’s technical performance and reduce costs. We achievedthese targets by using a fully extensible high porous bleachedgrade called Advantage Speed E White for the outer ply.5www.mondigroup.com
