DeductiblesDeductibles are standard across the insuranceindustry. They help control the cost of insurance forcustomers because they help control overall claimcosts for insurers.Your deductible is your portion of the cost of yourAutopac claim. We are responsible for everythingover the deductible portion, up to the policy limit.Basically, you pay your deductible and we paythe rest.If the damage to your vehicle is less than yourdeductible, you do not have to file a claim.Basic deductibleAll drivers in Manitoba automatically get a 750deductible when purchasing Basic Autopac forprivate passenger vehicles, effective April 1, 2021.You can purchase insurance options to loweryour deductible.Deductible optionsYou can choose to purchase a lower deductiblelevel of 500, 300, 200 Standard or 200 Plus.When you buy a lower deductible, your portion ofany claim is lower. The lower the deductible, thehigher insurance premium you’ll pay to renew yourinsurance. Essentially, you pay more to purchase yourinsurance coverage, but you’ll pay less if you are inan accident.2

How fault affectsyour deductibleYour deductible applies to any claim you makefor collision damage. We may refund all or partof your deductible, depending on who is at fault.For example, if the other driver is found 100 percent at fault, we will refund you 100 per cent ofyour deductible. If the other driver is found 75per cent at fault, we will refund you 75 per centof your deductible.You are only responsible for your owndeductible. If you are at fault, you do not paythe other person’s deductible. This is coveredby your third-party liability coverage included inyour Basic Autopac insurance.If an at-fault driver is notinsured by MPIIn most cases, if we have the name and addressof the other driver you should receive yourdeductible back. However, if the other driverdoesn’t have insurance the process to refundyour deductible can take longer than usual andmay not be successful.If the other driver is from outside Manitoba, we’lltry to recover all the repair costs, including your4

deductible, from the driver or their insurancecompany. If we’re successful, we’ll refundyour deductible.Vandalism, wildlife, theft,hit-and-run and hailA deductible is required on every claim, even ifyou had no control over the damage.In cases of vandalism, wildlife, theft, hit-and-runand hail, you will pay your deductible and wewill pay to repair the rest of the damage. Yourdeductible may be waived if you purchase alower deductible option.Payment and refundsYou pay the deductible to the repair shop. Therepair shop then bills us for the remaining costs.If the cost of repairs is the same as or less thanyour deductible, you pay the repair shop theexact amount of repairs.If your vehicle is a total loss, we subtract yourdeductible from the settlement amount we payto you.If the other driver is insured by us and found atfault, we will waive or refund your deductible.5
