Tome of Metal:Moderate Spells and IncantationsNot really.I, , am one badass mofo that has what it takes to playmusic. I am super fucking cool and sexy as shit! I am basically a dragon and I cando anything I want. I can even fly. Literally. Because I am a fucking dragon. I’m kindof a big deal.endorses this statement. He is also a dragon.

Before you get startedBy now, you are able to form basic chords and use different strumming patterns. Yourfingers don’t hurt as much as they use to and you can play for at least 30 minuteswithout stopping. I mean, you are legally a dragon now. So this is no surprise. You don’t learn to play guitar “during” guitar lessons. You learn toplay “between” guitar lessons. That is what this guide is for. This isto help you in between lessons. Ultimately, learning how to play wellis totally up to you. You need to keep at it and don’t getdiscouraged. If you can’t get something right away, then good! You arebeing challenged. This is the only way to get better. You are alreadyon your way to fulfilling your badass-ed-ness to a whole new level.Accept it.Remember to start slow when learning something new and gradually speedup your playing. And remember, it's called PLAYING! If you aren'thaving fun, take a break and come back to it. Most people quit playingguitar in its most early stages. The first couple of months of playingare the hardest. If you are reading this magical tome, then you havebeen playing for at least a couple of months now and you are ready formore of a challenge. The techniques below are more advancedtechniques. I say advanced, but I don’t mean that they are hard. Theyare just the next step in learning how to cast spells, I mean playguitar. The exercises below are very important and I still do them today. Sodon’t overlook them.

I. THE GUITAR \m/Here are some basic things that are useful to know. I am sure you know thesethings already, but humor me :) The fret is the actual metal bar on the neck of the guitar. To play theclearest note, make sure you place your fingers directly behind the fret. I placed the guitar upside down in this picture for a good reason. Thisis what it looks like when you are looking down at it when you areplaying. This may help you visualize your playing better when readingtablature. Tablature is a way you can read music without learning proper musicnotation. Tablature shows fret fingerings rather than pitch. Each line on the tablature sheet represents a string on theguitar. The top line is the high e string. It is also known as thefirst string on the guitar. It is also the thinnest string. Standard tuning is (EADGBe, 6th 5th 4th 3rd 2nd 1st string). AsAnimals Eat My Insides plays most of their music in drop A tuning(AEADF#B). I recommend learning guitar in standard tuning or dropD (DADGBe). Standard tuning provides a higher string tension whichwill help you strengthen your hand faster and also help with thelearning process all together. Index finger is the 1st finger. The middle finger is the 2ndfinger. The ring finger is the 3rds finger. The pinky is the 4thfinger. For better understanding on how to read tablature search “how toread guitar tabs” on YouTube. The internet is your best source ofinformation! Electric guitar is easier to play than acoustic. Acoustic guitarshave a higher string tension and are generally more difficult tomaneuver on than electric guitars.

Great Sources to use: Ultimate-guitar.com/tabs This site is a guitarist’s hero. Use this site to learn how to playalmost any song you can think of. Be sure to choose versions of songs with a high rating with multiplepeople that have rated it. Also, look up the “type” that says “tabs”.YouTube.com Many people post guitar tutorials online. Type in a song that you want tolearn with the word “lesson” after it, and maybe someone will teach youhow to play it.Musicnotes.com/blog/2014/11/14/count-music/ Understand how to count in music. It is important to understand thedifference between quarter, eighth, and sixteenth notes.NOW LET’S QUIT THE READING SHIT AND ACTUALLY START MELTING FACES OFF!WARNING: HAVE YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS AND FRIENDS KEEP PROPER DISTANCE FROM YOUR FIERY RIFFS TOAVOID INJURY. WELDING MASKS ARE RECOMMENDED TO HELP AVOID FACE MELTAGE. BEING SUPER OLD HELPSTOO. BECAUSE THEY LISTEN TO LIKE U2 AND STUFF. AND BECAUSE THEY AREN’T A DRAGON LIKE YOU.

II.ExercisesAlternate picking Goals of this exerciseo Speed, coordination, guitar awarenessI do this before, literally, every show.TURN OFF YOUR DISTORTION. I know, I know. But playing on a clean setting willhelp you hear your mistakes a lot more easily.USE A METRONOME (Free online metronomes available)Start with quarter notes. Try 60-80 bpm so you can really focus in on thetechnique. I know it is super slow, but it is worth it. If you can go all theway through the exercise without messing up AT ALL, then speed the bpm up by aninterval of 10-20. Keep going until you can’t play any faster without messingup. Write this number down! Now you know what you have to beat from here on.Try to improve this number little by little.0. Make a sacrificial offering to appease the dragon gods of metal. Then start.1. Align 1st finger to the 9th fret on the low thick E string2. Assign each finger to a fret. One finger per fret is our goal here. Example: Yourfirst finger will take care of the 9th fret, your second finger will be used on the10th fret, the third finger on the 11th fret, and the fourth finger on the 12th fret.3. Use the following finger pattern when playing the tablature below:1 2 3 4.Make sure you leave each finger pressed down until you switch strings. This means thatafter the first four notes, you have all four fingers pressed to the fingerboard.4. Now start alternate picking! Use a “down, up, down, up” pattern for picking. Do not pick the string with the pick flat up against the string. Angle yourpick slightly. For example: while holding your pick, hold your hand out withyour thumb on the top of your hand. Bend your wrist downwards to the ground. Iknow your wrist doesn’t naturally bend that way, but that is the way the angleof the pick should be.Now bring your pick hand back to your guitar. Now, your pick will more easilyslide across the strings while -----------------------

Continue working in this way down the fretboard, until you have reached the openposition. (Open means you pluck a string without pressing a fret with your left hand).7. If your hand starts to hurt or cramp up, just take a 2 minute break.8. Important note: You will get more from doing this slowly than from doing itquickly.9. Let out a victorious battle cry! You have become more awesome! I know it's hard tobelieve, but you are even cooler now!Alternate picking – 2 Goal of this exerciseo More speed!1. The same principle for “Alternate picking – 1” applies here. But simply add afew more notes. Notice that you move down one fret on the way down the scale.Be sure to read the tablature -------

--------------------------8-9-10-11-10-9------ Focus on accuracy: fingers just behind frets, even tone, connected (legato, notstaccato) notes, rhythmic timing, strict down/up alternate picking.oLegato means smooth. Try to connect each note into the next. YES LEGATOoStaccato means that the notes are sharp and separated from the others. There is a pause between notes. NO STACCATOThis exercise done accurately and patiently will develop speed. Done quicklyand carelessly, it will slowly turn you into a mutant dragon zombie that canonly be satisfied by eating human flesh and burning down villages. Let’s avoidthat.Finger Separation ExerciseThis exercise drives me crazy, but it really does help.1. Align 1st finger to 9th fret.2. Allocate one finger per fret so that the 2nd finger takes care of the 10th fret, the 3rd finger the 11th fret and the 4th finger the 12th fret.3. On the 6th string play notes using the following fingering pattern:1234 1243 1324 1342 1423 -9-12-11-10

4. Move up to the 5th string and repeat using the same pattern.5. Continue across the strings 4th, 3rd 2nd and 1st.6. Move down a fret and repeat a few times.Your best friend – Palm muting Goals of this exerciseo Chug, chug, chug o This technique, along with alternate picking, is essential to playingmetal. This technique is used to mute certain notes, helping to accentothers. This is where breakdowns get their heaviness.o It is also very useful to use when you want to avoid extra noise. Whenyou are playing a note, try to palm mute other strings so there is noextra noise.1. This technique is simple really. First off, let's figure out what part of yourhand to use when palm muting. Go ahead and give me your best karate chop!Hiya!! Yep, that’s the general area that you use. The bottom part of your palmis what you are going to use here.2. You will place your ninja choppin hand on your guitar bridge. To get a moremuted sound, slide it slightly to the left. To get a less muted sound, place itback on the bridge.3. These are the areas you will be placing your picking hand. In order to notstrain your hand when picking, feel free to slightly roll your hand to the leftto a comfortable string)string)string)

III. Apply the techniques! Here are two riffs from familiar songs (hopefully, or i’m getting too old) thatyou can play that apply these basic techniques. They also make great warm ups.Make sure you use alternate picking for both riffs Use a metronome and start SLOW (60-80 bpm) When you can do it all the way through PERFECTLY, then increaseyour speed by 10 bpm. Keep increasing speed until you can’t playany faster When you get to 120 bpm, go back to 60-80 bpm and use eight notesinstead of quarter notes. Now you are playing two notes per beat. Don’t be discouraged if you can’t get these riffs right away. They weremeant to be challenging. They will test your coordination and focus. If you breeze through these riffs, feel free to use them as simple warmups for practice.Three Days Grace - Riot Tuning is in Drop C (CGCFAD)Not important to change tuning unless you are playing to the song. Go ahead andplay it in standard! Take a listen to the song to get a feel for the way it issuppose to ----------E--------------- TIPS!ooYour index finger will be pressed down against the fret boa
