In some statesmore than one association also are functioning.The objectives and actions do vary. In some casesthey run journals, publish books and occasionallyorganize meets to celebrate important days.There is need for exchange of views amongassociations- e.g., AssamWe have hopes of becoming a federation ofassociations in the country also if accepted by thisforum and approved by our E.C.

The Association of Mathematics Teachers of Indiais a registered body founded on 27th June 1965 andregistered as SI43/1965 under the SocietiesRegistration Act XXI of 1860 on 29 October 1965.It is an academically oriented premier organizationof professionals and students interested in the fieldof mathematics and mathematics education.

MAJOR OBJECTIVES:To assist practising teachers of mathematics at alllevels in improving their expertise and professionalskills, in making mathematics learning interestingand enjoyable.To spot out and foster mathematical talents in theyoung.To disseminateEducation.newtrendsinMathematicsTo offer consultancy services to schools.

PADMASRI SRI S. NATARAJANA geography teacher and Headmaster, whoharnessed the potentials of teachers for thewelfare of the learners.He started several associations including SouthIndian Teachers Union, Geography association,English association .

DR. A. NARASINGARAO, PRESIDENT(1965-1967)The first president of the AMTI with an inimitablezeal of inculcating a sense of professionalismamong mathematics teachers.

PROF. TOTADRI IYENGARA great mathematician served as a storehouse ofwit and wisdom.

DR P.L. BHATNAGAR, PRESIDENT (1967 1976)A great scholar from Rajasthan, the pride of ourcountry, a nationalist at heart.

DR SURYAPRAKASH, PRESIDENT (1976 - 1977)A professor from Delhi. Under his presidentship,the model constitution was drawn and as an editorgave the journal “The Mathematics Teacher(India)” a nice get-up.

DR J.N. KAPUR, PRESIDENT (1977 - 1990)The golden era of Dr JNK’s influence was markedby the growth of the AMTI into a perfect all-Indianetwork.

SRI P.K. SRINIVASANA founder member, a great math-educator, le for phenomenal increase in thepopularity of the AMTI. His dream to declare 22ndDecember as Mathematics Day as resolved in our38th conference and sent to the Govt. has nowbeen recognized!

Exposure programmes for Talented students.For aspiring talented students orientationworkshops are organized once a year in generaland specific before our 2nd level and / or RMO forthe past at least 7 years for the selected few.

Exposure programmes for TeachersFor interested teachers three day orientationworkshops have been organised at Chennai for thepast 7 years. Besides on invitation we go toschools also. The content will be uction to non-routine olympiad typeproblem solving including model class withchildren where possible.

GAT – Grand Achievement TestA pre-final exposure to class XII students inMathematics on the same pattern of publicexamination with about 15% thought provokingquestions are conducted for the past 13 years in thefirst week of January. Prizes for those achieving 95%and above and pure silver medals for those getting100% are awarded.This year 4535 number of students registered.Representatives from other states can emulate thepattern, if interested

Popular LectureTo remove the acquired or forced(!) phobiatowards mathematics in students and the publicwe have been arranging popular lectures at leastthrice a year. Till now 15 lectures have beenarranged in Chennai. Similar offers from otherplaces are welcome.TIf help is extended we may organise suchprogrammes in other stations also
