Our TownPAGE 8denvillecitizen.comTOWN OF B OONTONHistoric Boonton in recent years has beentransforming its downtown back to a quaintMain Street thanks in part to a Main StreetUSA program. Many buildings have undergone renovation, and the sidewalks areadorned with planters and seasonal flowers. The beautification project has enhancedthe downtown’s public image and revitalizedthe business district, which is lined with amixture of mom-and-pop boutiques, designand computer companies, restaurants andhistoric buildings such as the Darress Theatre and Boonton Holmes Library.Located about seven miles north of Morristown, 2.45-square-mile Boonton is home tomany people seeking the convenience of access to three major highways: Route 46 andinterstates 80 and 287. Residents today areprimarily executives, skilled workers and independent business owners.Boonton was established as a village inthe early 1700s. The original town was onthe Rockaway River, about a mile and a halfdownstream from the current center of townand now under the waters of the Jersey CityReservoir. As early as 1747, Obadiah Baldwin operated an iron ore refining forge at that place, where water power was in ample supply.Under David Ogden, owner of the site anda large tract of surrounding land, and later his son Samuel, the ironworks grew, anda village of workmen and their familiesemerged. This village was named by the Ogdens “Boone-Towne” in 1761 in honor of theColonial governor Thomas Boone.Throughout the Revolutionary War, theironworks enlarged to include a rolling andslitting mill, the first in the county. It suppliediron products for the military – axes, kettles, horseshoes, tires, cups, rods and sheet-iron.
