USMCCCA President Manny PachecoAheartfelt greeting and specialthanks to all my fellow CCs forentrusting me with the stewardship ofour organization. I am humbled by theoutpouring of support.Let me begin by thanking ouroutgoing President Bill Hauptfleischfor his hard work and dedication overthe past two years. Let me also expressmy thanks to the many folks who workbehind the scenes (board members, ourexecutive director, our web master andothers) to ensure we continue to march. Our organization is at a crossroadsand it will take some patience and perseverance toensure that we take the right approach so that both ourAssociation and our Foundation remain strong, readyand relevant, not only to us CCs of yesterday but also tothe warrior story tellers of today and tomorrow.Over the course of the next year I want to dedicatemyself to finding creative and innovative ways of notjust increasing our membership, but just as important(if not more so) to figure out ways to get the more than400 members on our roles to play a more active role intheir organization. The first step of that endeavor is toask each of you to pledge to do one thing this year, notfor me, not for the CCs, but for your fellow Marine andfor our Corps. Please find some time to reach out to a fellow CCwhom you have not seen or spoken to in a while andsee if the two of you can reconnect. Perhaps in the spiritof our Corps and in recognition of our next Corpsbirthday that renewed camaraderie can be rekindled ata “Bar” a coffee bar if you so choose. Perhaps the twoof you can turn into four and four into eight and so on . And before you know it we have the re-birth of achapter. Now I know what some of you are thinking --meetings, dues, officers etc. --- and don’t get me wrongthose are all good things, but I believe a much simplerand more meaningful event may just be rekindlingof old friendships with the shared mutual interestof continuing the legacy of telling the stories of ourCorps. Perhaps we can take the example from thisyear’s gathering at Camp Pendleton and adopt one oftoday’s CCs and offer them an opportunity to share2014 USMCCCA Journaltheir stories of today’s Corps. You maybe surprised to know that they want asmuch to hear your stories as theirs.I’m certain you have the idea andcan make something meaningful out ofthis concept. As I look at the year ahead I’mgoing to ask that our board and ourassociation take a hard look at howwe have been doing business andlook for ways to improve. We will askthe hard questions of do we need tocontinue sending out a newsletter orshould we save that money and focusmore attention on our web-site. I also think we need torelook at our by-laws to ensure we are doing the thingswe should and if changes are needed to better reflecttoday’s environment. We should consider those changesand present them to the membership.inally, I want to ensure that our Associationremains committed to recognizing the outstandingwork that is and will be performed by today’s “Denig’sDemons.” They are a special breed of young men andwomen, enlisted and officers, who continue to findunique ways of telling our Corps story --- in words, pictures, illustrations and other creative ways, settingthem apart from all others. The new leadership at Headquarters Marine Corpshas already pledged to work closely with us to ensure“our” awards program is executed to meet its intendedpurpose --- recognizing the outstanding work of today’sCCs in honor and memory of many who have comebefore them.Again, I am humbled by the honor of leading ourorganization. I would like to thank all who have workedhard to get me here and in a special way I want tothank Don Gee for making it interesting! This is NOTabout me or Don, but rather our CCs and our passionto energize it. Twenty-five years ago in New York CityI observed Don’s passion and commitment to ourorganization --- and I continue to see it today. I hopethat others who continue to have that burning passioncan find a way to employ it.I look forward to a great year and our renewedcommitment to our Association.F— Manny Pacheco5

USMCCCA Foundation President Bill HauptfleischHaving held the reins of theAssociation for the past twoyears and working around thedifficulties imposed in trying to holdconferences with little active dutyattendance because of sequestration, you would think taking over theFoundation would be somewhat of abreeze. In many respects, it should be.Thanks to the leadership efforts ofDon O'Neal and our membership, the Foundation is in relatively goodfinancial condition. As I step in as your president itseems my principal objective has to be making surewe stay that way. My gut instinct tells me, however, that we really need to take a good look at some ofour revenue streams.First, members should understand that theFoundation is the "rainmaker" for the Association. It must make the money that keeps us afloat. TheFoundation also pays the bills, including the salariesof the executive director and webmaster. The bills forthe newsletter and the Journal also come from ourcoffers. The Foundation also is in place to supportcertain causes. We currently provide funding fortwo scholarships for members, including activeduty members and their dependents each year,to the tune of 6,000. We also have, for the pasteight or nine years, made grants to the InjuredMarines Semper Fi Fund. We currently make 75 cash grants to active duty first place winnersin our annual Distinguished Performance Awardsprogram. At our recent Oceanside conference wevoted to increase the latter amount to 100.On the income side of the ledger we dependon contributions to the Booster Club, our yearlyDedicated Member campaign, advertising revenueand of course, sponsorship of our DistinguishedPerformance Awards program. The largest single source of income each yearhas been income provided by the Foundation Golftournament run by the Florida Chapter. This small2014 USMCCCA Journalband of members has consistentlyshown what a chapter can do if itsmembers are dedicated to the successof the national organization. Now let's face the hard factsof things. If we are to continueto support any of the previouslymentioned programs - includingsalaries paid to our hard-workingexec and webmaster - we need todrastically increase our revenuestreams.Early on the Association adoptedthe life membership program. On one anniversarydate, honorary life memberships were okayedfor World War II veterans attending that year'sconference. More recently, your board voted to givemembers who had been awarded the Purple Hearthonorary memberships. Also, these were given toeach Denig winner and to certain celebrities.e have asked little of these members and, unfortunately in many instances, we havereceived little from them as well. So, in the comingweeks we are going to launch a special campaignasking these folk to help us sustain the programsthat we feel are necessary. We hope they willunderstand our need for doing this.We also are going to have to increase ouradvertising revenues and our executive director isworking on a completely new rate chart for ourannual Journal. I ask all members to bear in mindthat ad rates have not been increased in more than10 years. At the Oceanside Conference your FoundationBoard also voted to increase the DPA sponsorshipsfrom 200 to 250. We felt that was necessary if wewere to bump up the cash grants from 75 to 100.These are just three of the ways that I can see usmeeting our revenue income objectives. There areothers that your Board of Directors will be lookingat this next year. I hope we can count on you tohelp us.— Bill HauptfleischW7

Director, Office of Marine Corps Communication David LapanGreetings Marines! As I settle into my thirdassignment to Headquarters,Marine Corps and my thirdstint as director, I'd like toupdate you on several changesin the organization formerlyknown as the Division of PublicAffairs (DivPA, or Div Info inthe years before that!). Withthe reorganization of PublicAffairs and Combat Camera atHQMC, we are now the Officeof U.S. Marine Corps Communication(OUSMCC).Within OUSMCC are the CombatCamera Division, headed by Mr. ChrisCox, and the Division of Public Affairs, headed by Col. Sean Gibson. Thereorganization which applies only toHQMC at this time, not the Fleet- createssynergy, efficiencies and opportunities inthe way we communicate with diverseaudiences. The OUSMCC reorganizationis well underway but we are still workingthrough personnel, manning, equippingand process issues to make our neworganization as efficient and effective aspossible. We also are in the midst of a MarineCorps-wide reorganization of the PublicAffairs community, focused on creatingmore, and better, PA capability in ouroperational forces, the marrow of ourCorps. This reorganization too remains awork in progress but we are working hardto get it right.2014 USMCCCA JournalOverall, the Marine Corpsis in great shape. As you mayknow, the Marine Corpsjust completed a transitionof commandants, with Gen.Joe Dunford taking over forGen. Jim Amos. As Gen.Dunford wrote in his initialmessage to Marines, "Weare recruiting and retaininghigh quality Marines whoare fit, tough, and smart. OurMarines are well led, welltrained, and well equipped. We remainforward deployed and forward engaged inthe Pacific, South America, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. We have clearlydemonstrated our flexibility, versatility, andadaptability. Marines are relevant and inhigh demand."Gen. Dunford also wrote thatchallenges remain and much workneeds to be done. The same is true of thePA and Combat Camera fields. But acrossthe board, the quality of our Marines andcivilian Marines is outstanding. In our roleas communicators for the Marine Corps, today we are perhaps more relevant thanever.Thank you for all you have done forour PA and Com Cam communities andI'd ask for your continued support of ourMarines, their families and our missions.Semper Fidelis,David A. LapanColonel, USMC9

Treasurer Reports Don 0’Neal,USMCCCA FoundationIt is a privilege and honor toserve as your FoundationTreasurer. We’ve come a longway from the time when it wasdecided that the Foundationshould serve as a stand-aloneentity. Our coffers havecontinued to swell but at thesame time our expenses havegrown as well. This reportserves, merely, as a broad brushlook at where we stand alongwith a forecast of where we aregoing. It also serves a challenge to all of oursupporters to continue to help support theprojects we have on our plate.First, let me say, our Foundation is solvent. We currently have more than 100,000 inassets. If that sounds like a lot, it is not.The reality is that it takes more than 35,000 to keep the Foundation afloat eachyear. That consists mainly of salaries we payto our contract work force (i.e., the executivedirector, the webmaster, our book keeper andincome tax preparation.) Add to that thescholarships we give each year and it adds up.On the other side of the balance sheet, most of our income is theresult of the generosity ofour members. It comes inthe form of support for theBooster Club, the DedicatedMembers Campaign andadvertising in our annualjournal.e also get a shot inthe arm each yearas a result of the FloridaChapter’s annual golftournament. Unfortunately,we reached a point whereour income is not keepingup with our expenses. Booster Clubcontributions were down last year. TheDedicated Members campaign pretty muchkept up with past year’s support. We need to increase member giving andfind outside sources of funding. If we don’t, Iregret to forecast that our Foundation will beinsolvent within the next five-to-seven years. So in closing, I urge all CC’s to renew yoursupport of your Foundation. Give whateveryou can but continue to contribute to thesuccess and future of your Foundation.— Don O'NealW Rick Levers, USMCCCA AssociationAnother year has passed and this "me hearties" is where theassociation's coffers stand as of today's accounting:CD - 2225 holds 10,167.22CD - 8390 holds 15,324.47CD - 5867 holds 15,443.08Checking - 7693. 24,832.15Money Mkt - 0237 5,250.59For the grand total of 71,017.51It appears we are solid and financially ready to take onthe 2015 conference.Oohrah!— Rick Levers2014 USMCCCA Journal11

Executive Director Jack PaxtonThey say time flies whenyou're having fun.it hasand I am now entering my10th year as your executivedirector and, if anything myenthusiasm is even greater thanit was in 2005 when Don Geehanded me the reins of theAssociation.Well do I remember the lateBob Morrisey, our first exec, telling me: "Pax, it's a labor of love."And, it is. I've become reacquainted withMarines I served with more than 50 yearsago. I've made new friends from theformer and retired ranks. Best of all, Ihave had the satisfaction of watching thisAssociation and its Foundation become a"player" in "things Marine."Rarely does a week go by that we donot receive an inquiry from someonewanting to know something about ourpast history in covering the conflicts ourCorps has been involved with. Throughour interaction with LeatherneckMagazine and Marine Corps HistoricalDivision we have been able to become ago-to "source" for magazines, newspapersand other media entities. Much of thiscan be attributed to our website www.usmccca.org. We get hits! Our interaction with the regularestablishment, rocky at times, is nowback on solid ground with the arrival ofCol. Dave Lapan as Director, Marine2014 USMCCCA JournalCorps CommunicationDivision. The Divisionis solid with Col. SeanGibson overseeing thepublic affairs side andMr. Chris Cox, guidingCombat Camera and Lt.Col. Brian Thompson as hisdeputy. What gives me greatpleasure is watching the"parade" of active duty talent marchingacross our scope each year. An evengreater pleasure is seeing these Marinesbeing recognized with promotions andkey assignments. While we have come a long waywe have an even longer way togo. We are not growing as we shouldand this needs an injection of "Mannyism." We are counting a lot on ournew President, Manny Pacheco. OurFoundation, as former President, nowTreasurer Don O'Neal notes, needs ahealthy injection of cash if we are tocontinue offering our two scholarshipseach year and maintain our solid role ofsupport for the Injured Marines SemperFi Fund and other worthy projects.I'm ever the optimist. We've been inbusiness for a good many years and Iexpect we will for a good many years tocome. Keep the faith and Semper Fi.— Jack T. Paxton13
