WhenChubby Checkers performed, cars were backed up all the way to Glen Bumie, which was many miles away."12 Adams has received local and national recognition for his trailblazing work promoting African American music. Notably, the Smithsonian Museum of American History prominently featured him in a recent exhibit on African American history, and the museum currently houses a sizeable collection of WANN related equipment, including a microphone, remotebroadcast set, photos, and promotional material." In 2006 Charles W. Adams Ill created the Charles "Hoppy" AdamsFoundation to promote and provide charitable and educational services for youth and adults in the Annapolis metropolitancommunity. 4 0n August 18, 2018, the City of Annapolis renamed a one block stretch of Holeclaw Street in the Parolecommunity, Hoppy Adams Way. Historian Janice Hayes-Williams points out that "If you were anybody who lived inAnnapolis and listened to the radio station, you knew him. The honor is well deserved because he's been an icon in hiscommunity.»15The Charles H. "Hoppy" Adams Jr. house is historically significant for its association with a successful and popularentertainer who helped to bridge cultural divides during the period of segregation and Jim Crow laws. This circa 1964dwelling is a tangible reminder of Adam's legendary career as a disc jockey at WANN radio and as an announcer atCarr's Beach. The building has remained vacant and unaltered since Adams death. While in need of repair, the structureretains its integrity of design, materials, workmanship, and feeling. Further, the home's historic setting with the Parolecommunity is unchanged, despite being relatively close to Parole Center, a large-scale commercial district.aI I https : //www. smithsonianmag. com/smithsonian-institution/dj -hoppy-adams-radio -annapo [2 Oral history interview with Carroll Hynson, conducted by Lyndra Marshall on January 22, -influence-segregated-america180955594/::#:.;/a/,: :g:#7S,.:ro 8.
